Frank Answers: Frank J. Movie Star, 9mm or .40, and Ninja Moats
Posted by Frank J. at 01:03 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (28)

Kelsey J. from Anytown, USA writes:
Frank, my mom and I were thinking of making a movie where all the liberals (and, if arrangements can be made, monkeys) die because they don't support gun rights. Would you like to star?

Sure, but there has to be lots of gun fights and I keep to keep all the firearms I use in the film. Plus there has to be a gratuitous katana fight scene where I quickly kill twenty people with my sword in under a minute.

And, at the end, it can't say, "No animals were harmed in the making of this movie." Instead, is should say, "Numerous monkeys were killed in the making of this movie, and we're happy with that."

Oh, and my percentage I ask for will of the gross, not the net.

Justin R. (a.k.a. Red Mist) from Hell (Grand Forks), ND writes:
I just turned 21 recently and I am trying to decide what firearm to buy as a concealed carry gun. I've narrowed it down to a Glock 19 in 9mm or a Glock 23 in .40S+W. I was also considering the Springfield XD 4 inch service model in the same calibers, but I haven't heard much about its reliability, so I think I'm going to stick with a proven gun. Can you help me with my dilemma? 9mm or .40?

I don't know; considers whether you want to kill your attacker or tickle him.

Hey, I always say go with a .45, but a .40 has plenty of punch. 9mm is just some wussy metric bullet made by Nazis. Stay away from metric ammo, or, if you must get a 9mm, instead refer to it has a .380 long.

UPDATE: I like to give joke answers, but guns are a serious thing. Anyway, I have now just got this months issue of Gun Tests magazine, and they recommend the cheaper Springfield XD 9. I still think it's better to have at least a .40 for the stopping power, though.

Also, if you are going to carry, you want to keep a round in the chamber, otherwise you can't do a one-handed draw. I just don't trust Glock's with a round in the chamber. I need either a stiffer double action on the first shot or a manual safety.

Previously, I recommended this carry holster which allows one to carry a full size auto. Here is me wearing the holster with both my Colt 1991 and Walther PPK in it. Such a holster gives you more options in what you can carry.

Stephen from Hope, Arkansas asks:
I believe your logic is flawed: strategically-placed wide moats would do a much better job at repelling random ninja attacks than tall fences. (It's common knowledge that ninjas dislike water.) Does that change your pro-random ninja attack stance?

First, don't mischaracterize my statements; I am not "pro-random ninja attack". I just think that measures such as walls and moats are wastes of time. Ninjas will climb the walls, and, remember, ninjas can jump very far. The amount of money it would take to make a moat wide enough to keep out ninjas would be too costly, plus there's that extra long bridge or gate to take care of. I still think the only real solution is to teach the death-touch to the common man. When each man himself can take on a ninja, then random ninja attacks will cease to be a problem.

Not like it affects me anyway; I'm a samurai.

I've stayed away from anything smaller than a .45 (or bigger, for that matter, as I only own one gun), but perhaps Justin could look at a Walther PPK/S in .380.

It has a delivery like a brick through a plate glass window, or so M would say (and yes, I know that was a PPK in 7.65 mil, but you can't get those here and the .380 is better anyway).

#1 - Posted by: Spoons on June 24, 2003 01:29 PM

I personally carry a PPK in .380. It's not very expensive (and now made by Smith and Wesson) and I find it to be quite accurate at self-defense ranges. You'd want to get some special defense rounds for a caliber that small, which I haven't researched into yet.

I have a conceal and carry holster that allows me to carry a full-size 1911, though, and that is what I prefer to keep on me.

#2 - Posted by: Frank J. on June 24, 2003 01:44 PM

The Walther PPK is now made by Smith & Wussy?!?

I retract my recommendation.

#3 - Posted by: Spoons on June 24, 2003 02:05 PM

Frank,

Kim is going to be peeved. You did not refer to THAT round correctly. It should always be referred to as the "9mm europellet *spit*". (I'd do the "tm" thing, but I forgot how to do superscript/subscript.)

#4 - Posted by: Hodadenon on June 24, 2003 02:06 PM

Smith and Wesson is now American owned (again) and makes a .500 caliber gun. All the cool people stopped hating them a while ago.

#5 - Posted by: Frank J. on June 24, 2003 02:07 PM

Oh sure, just avoid my question while I die from monkey pox.

#6 - Posted by: Tiger on June 24, 2003 04:21 PM

Monkey pox, Tiger, could have been also lightning or diarrhoea.

#7 - Posted by: Amphitryon on June 24, 2003 04:54 PM

Thanks for the answer Frank. :) .40 it is. That's really what I was leaning toward after reading so many stories about the poor stopping power of 9mm. (I saw a reality ER show last night on TLC where a guy got shot by a 9mm in the head and was still awake and talking!!! Must have gone through some metal in his car door first, it was a road rage incident) I'll look into the PPK, but I do like having a gun big enough I can grip well, and I think the PPK might be a tad small for my hands, despite the ease of carry. I'll have to find a range that has one for rent. (This also explains why the new Walther P99's I saw had S+W trademarkes on them..) Thanks again Samurai Frank.
*bow*

#8 - Posted by: Red Mist on June 24, 2003 05:09 PM

Yeah, I just saw that in this month's American Rifleman. I said, "Hey! That's a P99!" (which I own one of) but it had S&W on it (plus walther printed smaller on part of it). I don't think the German company makes the PPK at all anymore.

#9 - Posted by: Frank J. on June 24, 2003 05:17 PM

I personally prefer the .45ACP to anything else ( at least until I can afford a Desert Eagle), but most compact pistols in .45 can't carry a "full" 10 rounds in their smaller grips (Damn capacity limits! Rarr!). I'd rather have the extra rounds for when the shit hits the fan, so the .40, with good ballistics, is probably the best compromise between size and stopping power.

#10 - Posted by: Tom on June 24, 2003 05:43 PM

BTW, try a SmartCarry. You can comfortably conceal a full-size 1911 or Glock in the largest size.

#11 - Posted by: Tom on June 24, 2003 05:45 PM

Actually, Frank, you'll have to supply your own weapons, seeing as we are on sort of a low budget...but I guess you can use my shotgun.

#12 - Posted by: Kelsey J. on June 24, 2003 06:20 PM

Funny enough, I just got a Gun Tests magazine today that reviews the Springfield XD. I'm going to add some more comments to my answer.

#13 - Posted by: Frank J. on June 24, 2003 06:34 PM

Justin,

You might want to take a look at the Glock 21C. It's a .45, compensated, and is a fun tool to play with. The only problem is that it vents out the top and will kill your night vision after one shot.

I also own a Sig Sauer P220. You can't attach as many toys like Glock can handle, but it's a smooth shot. The compensated barrel vents out the side, and it's my arm of choice in the evening.

#14 - Posted by: The Agnostic on June 24, 2003 07:37 PM

The cool people are wrong. Smith & Wussy is still the enemy of gun rights in the U.S. I may have to write something at length on the subject one of these days to set everybody straight.

#15 - Posted by: Spoons on June 24, 2003 08:11 PM

Frank, your obsession with monkeys has gone too far. Time to start concentrating on penguins.

#16 - Posted by: Josh Heit on June 24, 2003 10:16 PM

As far as penguin hating goes, if all of 'em are whiney little tards like "Tiki" in that story, I'm fer turning the polar caps into glass.
This is another article by the same woman about the human shields that went to Iraq. (somebody's gotta tell me how to make a hyperlink work)

http://www.techcentralstation.com/1051/defensewrapper.jsp?PID=1051-350&CID=1051-012703B

I think I'm going to have to read more of her stuff. I likes her.

#17 - Posted by: Mike the Marine on June 24, 2003 10:54 PM

Leave the penguins alone damnit!

Also, were I you Frank, I'dve also asked for lots of love scenes. And not the mushy type either.

#18 - Posted by: Ken on June 25, 2003 12:09 AM

What about a moat with two high walls on either side and a pair of draw bridges that split in the middle and raise opposite eachother? And crocodiles in the middle. Everyone knows crocodiles eat dark, claded people as is seen in the bridge scebe from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

#19 - Posted by: Cloaknblade on June 25, 2003 01:14 AM

Thanks for the comments guys. I had thought about the Compensated models, but like you said, after one shot at night your night vision is shot. Would be nice for the recoil though.
I'm also concerned about the lack of the external safety on the Glock. As much as I like them, it would worry me to carry it with a round in the chamber, so I was originally thinking about carrying it simply with a loaded mag or loaded with one of those safe-t-block pieces that slides in behind the trigger. Or the Springfield XD and not worry about it (grip safety) After reading the comments it's made me think twice about that though. I'm going to look into the XD, in .40 of course! Thanks for the update too Frank.

Funny, he never shared the information with me....
