Who Wants a Permalink?
Posted by Frank J. at 02:06 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (46)

I used to approve pretty much any link exchange, but now my blogroll is too large and I'm too big and important. As Stephen Den Beste had said before, permalinks don't really bring you more traffic, but I still think they are important as a status symbol. So I came up with this great idea: why don't I have people compete over a permalink on my site!

Here's the deal. I'll come up with a short answer question, and people competing for the permalink will then write answers to it. I will then post all the answers and have people vote on the best one. I will say what blogs are competing, but I will not say who wrote which. If someone reveals which one they wrote, they are disqualified (this keeps blogs which already have a decent amount of traffic from trying to tip the scales). If you are interested, post in the comments section along with your blog URL. Anyone already on my links page is disqualified (only Rachel gets multiple links).

As always, if you just want to get on my Links of the Day post, feel free to e-mail me a post anytime you feel particularly proud of one. Best done during the weekdays when I have less time to read and find links anyway.

Yay verily, I am interested.

Cool. If I can get a permalink I'd have a reason to actually start blogging again!! I'd even get the heck off of blogspot!!

#2 - Posted by: Tuning Spork on July 13, 2003 02:18 PM

ooops!
here's the url link (on my name):

#3 - Posted by: Tuning Spork on July 13, 2003 02:20 PM

Yup.

#4 - Posted by: Nephi on July 13, 2003 02:33 PM

I'm interested in a permalink. I need more traffic to my site ;-)

#5 - Posted by: Jarred Nicholls on July 13, 2003 02:38 PM

Why not? I have no pride.

#6 - Posted by: Mike on July 13, 2003 02:39 PM

Frank,

I've been experimenting with different ways to use MT templates to create pages that will display plug-ins and blogrolls.

This could be a better solution for you.

You could have several blogrolls, a list of "top" blogs on your main page, and then a separate section that displays other blogrolls.

I have seen this done effectively on other blogs.

All you need to do is create a new Main Index template and name the output file "blogrolls.html". I did this to display the Netflix plug-in lists on this page:

http://www.fritzliess.com/movabletype/movies.html

I just removed the MT tags for the blog entries and replaced it with the Netflix plug-in tags. You would do the same thing with the BlogRolling tags.

I would prefer to get a permalink based on merit. For example, my blog is 13 days old and already I have well over 500 hits. I am also in the top 200 of your referrers, putting me ahead of some people who already have permalinks. And...umm, well, "Jennifer" is #12 on the keyword referral list even though it is for Eccleston. And...yeah, that's all I've got.
But I'll probably compete anyway.

#8 - Posted by: Jennifer on July 13, 2003 02:56 PM

What's a blogroll?

#9 - Posted by: Banagor on July 13, 2003 03:35 PM

Oooh, a contest. Fun! Count me in since I, like Mike, have no pride.

#10 - Posted by: Dana on July 13, 2003 04:02 PM

So basically you want us to jump through hoops and amuse you for a few hits? im in.

#11 - Posted by: Collins on July 13, 2003 04:48 PM

Me too! Me too! If Jennifer is going to play I want to play too!

#12 - Posted by: Susie on July 13, 2003 04:49 PM

I'll throw my name in the hat. ;)

#13 - Posted by: Tony Hagale on July 13, 2003 05:02 PM

Count me in Frank.

#14 - Posted by: Tom Bridge on July 13, 2003 06:06 PM

Fritz,
I dunno; what you said sounds complicated, while having people compete for a link sounds fun and easy.

#15 - Posted by: Frank J. on July 13, 2003 06:34 PM

Now wait a second, this is wholly unfair Frank. What about your loyal readers who only have personal web pages and not blogs? I think we deserve equal competition linkage opportunity here. :-)
Oh, and if you refuse, I'm gonna come after you with my posse!

#16 - Posted by: Red Mist on July 13, 2003 07:19 PM

If I send a pic of Andrea Harris's boobage, can I get TWO links?

#17 - Posted by: Kim du Toit on July 13, 2003 07:22 PM

Actually, the difficult decision will be whether to grovel for a link to my normal, everyday site, or to the ongoing, interactive, erotic story site. Mmmm...Such a tough decision.

(I'm not telling. Don't ask.)

#18 - Posted by: Mamamontezz on July 13, 2003 08:10 PM

As many times as I see Susie link to your page, I am almost sure she has single-handedly moved you at least one step up the evolutionary ladder. I vote you give one to Susie. Besides, she loves you! I, however, truly do only want you to link me based on merit.

#19 - Posted by: Tiger on July 13, 2003 09:13 PM

Count me in too!

#20 - Posted by: Graham Lester on July 13, 2003 10:12 PM

My brain hurts. Therefore, I am in. Or, do what Tiger said. And I need a beef burrito.

#21 - Posted by: Norbizness on July 13, 2003 10:35 PM

Tiger,
Why would I want to link to someone who has nothing but links to my page? I already read my page.

Despite that, Susie is definitely in on the competition. I'll wait until Monday night for people to opt in, and then I'll have to figure out a way to whittle down the candidates before I get to the short answer question phase (the poll I use only allows up to ten choices). Anyway, I hope the process gives everyone some more linkage.

#22 - Posted by: Frank J. on July 13, 2003 10:44 PM

I'm in!

#23 - Posted by: ZJeremyCook on July 13, 2003 10:47 PM

Sounds like fun!

#24 - Posted by: David on July 13, 2003 10:55 PM

I need all the linkage I can get - count me in!

#25 - Posted by: Beth on July 13, 2003 11:58 PM

Okay, count me in.

#26 - Posted by: Kelly on July 13, 2003 11:59 PM

I'm not above groveling, I'll take part as well.

#27 - Posted by: serenity on July 14, 2003 12:02 AM

Count me in. You bring out the exhibitionist in me!

#28 - Posted by: Bloodthirsty Warmonger on July 14, 2003 12:40 AM

Ewww, Bloodthirsty. No one said anything about having to look at naked bloggers. There's only one blogger I wouldn't mind seeing naked, and he already has a permalink.

#29 - Posted by: Jennifer on July 14, 2003 12:51 AM

I'm in!

#30 - Posted by: Dave on July 14, 2003 01:13 AM

Me me me me me!

Please?

#31 - Posted by: Pixy Misa on July 14, 2003 07:49 AM

er - what was the question?

If I enter and win, am I OBLIGED to post something entertaining and erudite? Not sure I can handle the pressure . .

#32 - Posted by: Marie on July 14, 2003 08:52 AM

If the bus doesn't have enough seats for everyone, I'll let Pixy Misa or Tiger have mine...(although I suggest you get a bigger bus--those "short" buses have a stigma that just won't go away no matter how much pine sol you use...)

#33 - Posted by: Susie on July 14, 2003 09:04 AM

Sorry, Susie, everyone is on the bus now, and if it drops below 50 mph it explodes. People can still opt in for the rest of the day and then I'll figure out what to do next. I don't want to make this too long and drawn out just for a permalink (there are limits to my ego).

#34 - Posted by: Frank J. on July 14, 2003 09:26 AM

I'd be perfectly pleased with a two-day link. That'd suffice just fine.

Let me know when it'll be though, so I can get a better picture on my site.

hln

#35 - Posted by: hln on July 14, 2003 10:03 AM
someone is naked? who is naked? besides acidman. #36 - Posted by: Steph on July 14, 2003 10:13 AM

But will you respect me in the morning? No, don't answer. I'm in.

#37 - Posted by: LittleA on July 14, 2003 10:29 AM

I'd like to think that I'm above this sort of thing. Like Tiger, I only want a link based on merit. I find it particularly offensive that Frank J., strictly for his own amusement and a few links and hits, would make us lesser blogs bleg him for a link. Where's your dignity, people? Don't you see that when you fall for stuff like this, it just encourages him and feeds his already oversized ego? Disgusting!

I'm in.

#38 - Posted by: Bill on July 14, 2003 10:48 AM

Not only am I a hypocrite, I'm an idiot. Here's my CORRECT URL.

#39 - Posted by: Bill on July 14, 2003 10:50 AM

I work for the State of Virginia and have no pride. Sign me up for the freakin' contest. No life, no love, no money, no hope of salvation... I'll be perfect in the blogworld.

#40 - Posted by: John on July 14, 2003 11:27 AM

It's not about pride. We have no stinking pride.

#41 - Posted by: Bob on July 14, 2003 02:26 PM

I'm desperate for attention. Sign me up, please.

#42 - Posted by: Harvey Olson on July 14, 2003 10:53 PM

Hey. I can do this with my keyboard tied behind my back.

I'm in. (But it's after midnight in CA, so you'll have to be sweet and not perceive this as "the 15th." That is, I hope I'm getting in under the wire.)

#43 - Posted by: Little Miss Attila on July 15, 2003 04:14 AM

I've been so busy lambasting monkeys on my site that it's taken me a while to get to this post. Hopefully, I'm not too late. If I am, oh well, it was for a good cause.
