Permalink Contest Talkback
Please use the comments section of this post to discuss the permalink contest. I know some people thought it was a distraction, but I figured they could just skip those posts and read the other stuff. I plan on another, shorter competition later which will be a bit different, but I would like to hear some feedback from my readers first. 32 Responses To "Permalink Contest Talkback"
1. The Permalink Contest allowed me to check out some sites that I might not have bothered to look at in the past. 2. One of the contestants sent me an email stating that, in the process, he discovered that he was more humorous than he had thought - and I agreed - some of this stuff had me falling out of my chair. You brought out the best and worst in some of these folks. 3. I think it should continue but be shortened in some way - possibly less groups. Also, maybe you could have them post their answers (and the question) on their sites so we would actually have to visit them to vote. Maybe that would be too annoying...just an idea. #1 - Posted by: Blackfive on August 7, 2003 10:04 AMIt gave us some great exposure, it gave you a bunch of links and maybe a little exposure, so everyone won, no? The only thing is, I think it took too much time for you to run it. Obviously, we don't want to take time away from Frank Answers, In My World, etc. That's a wordy way of saying: do it again as long as it doesn't take you so much time. :-) #2 - Posted by: Jennifer on August 7, 2003 10:05 AMThe plan for the next one is one round, with contestant picked by using the random number generator. There will also be a twist... #3 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 7, 2003 10:11 AMYeah, I'm looking forward to it Frank. Thanks. #4 - Posted by: Jarred Nicholls on August 7, 2003 10:16 AMGood, because as winner of this one you'll have duties in the next competition. #5 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 7, 2003 10:22 AMThe contest was a distraction? Ignore the whiners, I say. What about your website is NOT a distraction? I come here several times a day because I need a...one of those, uhm...whatever that was I was talking about. And hey, my Glock 17 9mm does NOT have devil magic inside. It has SCIENCE! And it is a strong persuasive force for good and a powerful tool to fight evil. With the 17-round magazine I can fight off bad guys all day long (takes forever to get all those bullets in there, though). #6 - Posted by: Zeb Trout on August 7, 2003 10:58 AMThe contest was fun but too short. Make the next one multi-generational! Contestants must pledge their first-born child and their children's children to carry on after they kick the bucket. Another idea for the next contest: Limit it to female wearers of the Nuke the Moon shirt. Apply water liberally. Serve plenty of beer to the audience. #7 - Posted by: tictoc on August 7, 2003 11:14 AM"Duties" Frank? Hmm...this should be interesting...hehe :-) #8 - Posted by: Jarred Nicholls on August 7, 2003 11:15 AMThis was one of my favorite features in a while. Blind raging narcissism coupled with blind desperate devotion is always amusing. :) But yes, shorter would be better. #9 - Posted by: melissa on August 7, 2003 11:22 AMThe permalink contest was great! I liked everything about it. I was impressed with everybody's creative answers (especially Popeye the Sailor Man's). I don't think it lasted too long (but I'm not a member of the ADHD generation). Can't wait for the next one! #10 - Posted by: jonag on August 7, 2003 11:36 AMI enjoyed the contest because it gave me lots of blog-fodder (now why does that make me think of Pixy's movie series?) to write allegedly funny posts and pretend I was upset with you. Oh! And I think Pixy's logo should be the "official" one, if you can get him to correct his spelling; if not, we'll go with yours.... #11 - Posted by: Susie on August 7, 2003 11:53 AMjonag, Frank, The Permalink contest was lots of fun, and a creative way to spend some time. I have to admit that it was a big draw for me to your site, to see the self-serving, oh-please-pick-my-answer responses that folks sent in. I *loved* both of Harvey's responses, and voted for them each time (I especially love the final round, which had me rolling on the floor). Anyhow, looking forward to the next contest (which I hope isn't too far off). roq #13 - Posted by: RoQ on August 7, 2003 12:08 PMPermalink contest was a lot of fun, especially reading everyone's take on how to kill commies, hippies, etc. It also brought other websites I'd never seen before to my attention. Maybe it lasted a little long, but it was still great! #14 - Posted by: Mackynzie on August 7, 2003 12:26 PMI had a really good time of it - for the short time that I was actually a contestant. I probably laughed more at the twistings of my own mind than any of you laughed at the written results thereof. Good exercise. hln #15 - Posted by: hln on August 7, 2003 12:27 PMFrank, i loved the permalink contest! It was not a distraction for me. #16 - Posted by: annika on August 7, 2003 01:08 PMI thought it was GREAT. I got knocked out in the first round, but getting the coveted link was really so beside the point. I found out about lots of cool blogs I hadn't heard of, and maybe a few people found out about me. I'm grateful to Frank for sacrificing both his bandwidth and his time to pull this off. Some people will see that as sucking up, but it's really just appreciation. He don't do this for the money, folks! Anyway, I look forward to the next contest, whatever it is. #17 - Posted by: Dana on August 7, 2003 01:40 PMI had a great time, even though I totally got shafted in that last one. I know I voted for myself way more than that. #18 - Posted by: Tom Bridge on August 7, 2003 01:43 PMI'd say screw it, Frank. It must have been a lot of work. Put the next permalink on eBay. Have a competition to see who can spend the most money on it! #19 - Posted by: Brian J. on August 7, 2003 01:55 PMI had fun. Lots of work for you, unless you automated it all. Thanks, I like contests and I like answering yer polls! But, I'd say a permalink contest should maybe be restricted to one round, one day (or weekend), maybe once a month. I liked the polls about the Mexican and Buck etc. Maybe a poll about the California race or something! I dunno, I'm just typin'... #21 - Posted by: Tuning Spork on August 7, 2003 03:00 PMI thought it was a great initiative, Frank. First of all, it helped direct me and others to new or less-known blogs, which is always a good thing in my book, because no matter what the quality of the blog, nothing will happen unless somebody pays it a visit. I, for one, would still be blogging for myself and my pet piranha if it wasn't for other people giving me the occasional link way back when, and I'm a firm believer in "paying it forward". Not that I'll link to just about anything, far from it (it would be counter-productive, in that it would decrease the likelihood of anybody following a plug of mine), nor will I ever have to, considering the massive amount of as-of-yet undiscovered talent out there. So, in short, it's a great job you've done there, definitely on par with the Carnival of the Vanities. And second, I got a HUGE kick out of reading the submissions from the contestants too! #22 - Posted by: Emperor Misha I on August 7, 2003 03:02 PMDefinitely a lot of fun to participate in, but by all means make it easy on yourself. I was totally impressed by the good nature displayed by the contestants. This could have gotten snarky, but didn't. I'm ready to win the next time. Until then, my rallying cry is, "Damn you, IMAO!" #23 - Posted by: LittleA on August 7, 2003 03:51 PMI liked it, but I wish I had gotten my permanent site running just a little quicker so I could have participated. That said, you must click on: Tasty Manatees When you first started the contest, all the instructions made it sound like a boring, time-wasting pain in the ass. Then the responses started coming in--TOO COOL! I'm sure you have a zillion things you wish you'd done differently, and you will in the next contest, so rock on. Love to see another in a few months. #25 - Posted by: slimedog on August 7, 2003 04:10 PMI loved the contest but I think that polls are too easy to manipulate. I think it would be better to restrict the voting to a group of volunteer judges who are unaffiliated with the contestants, have them vote by email, and have yourself or some other appointed individual make the final decision if there's a draw. #26 - Posted by: Graham Lester on August 7, 2003 05:30 PMThe contest was good. #27 - Posted by: Veeshir on August 7, 2003 06:25 PMI found it to be a horrible distraction in my life. All this writing and trying to be funny... This could have been avoided if you just linked me! Just kidding--actually, I really enjoyed it because we got to see some other blog sites and I found some I'd never heard of before that I will visit often. #28 - Posted by: serenity on August 7, 2003 07:14 PMA twist Frank? Way to channel the butler from Joe Millionaire. #29 - Posted by: TH on August 7, 2003 07:18 PMNotice the subtext, Frank J. Your other readers are cheap. I'll start the bidding at ten dollars. #30 - Posted by: Brian J. on August 8, 2003 12:27 AMthose answers wer just too dissapointing for me, im just so used to your stuff that it didnt get any laughs from me #31 - Posted by: Joey D on August 8, 2003 01:25 AMFirst, I just wanted to thank Frank for putting so much effort into this and for keeping it running smoothly & on schedule. I don't know what all else he did, but I know that in my round 1 responses, I didn't include the links to my favorite movie or favorite Frank post. He had to dig those up. Second, the next contest should be shorter. Not because this one was too long, but merely for the sake of variety. The third one could be long again. Third, if you liked my entries on Popeye and the Frankfeldbola virus, you can find my answers to the other 5 questions via my categories sidebar link (you have to poke at the calendar a bit to find all the posts). Also, I enjoyed the 200 words or less format so much that I've made it a new category. I've got 2 up already. Expect new ones randomly. #32 - Posted by: Harvey on August 8, 2003 08:36 AMPost a comment
