Ronin Thought of the Day
Posted by Frank J. at 08:45 AM | View blog reactions | Comments (14)

Today's wisdom comes from Master Samurai and former leader of America, Theodore Toshiro Roosevelt:

To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to create a menace to society.

Heed his words.

Excellent. We're starting off the morning talking about Bill Clinton.

Morals? Come again?

Thank you for mentioning the TRUE Roosevelt. He and Reagan were the two greatest presidents of the 20th century. FDR was from 'THAT side of the family.'

#3 - Posted by: El Jefe on June 18, 2004 09:34 AM

amen to that!

Another great quote from the Bull Moose:

A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.

Wow.... how unbelievably true. And El Jefe, amen to that. Two great quotes. One day.

A brilliant man!! And a second amen to El Jefe!! FDR was just a Teddy wannabe (apparently he swam in the shallow end of the gene pool)!

Teddy, while president, helped design the bayonets to be used with the new Springfield M1903 rifle then being issued to the troops- triangular cross-section, blood grooves and all. He rejected the original spike bayonet claiming it was "too flimsy."

What a kick-ass president.

The story of how TR got the bayonet design change needs further telling. He took a Krag rifle (then the battle rifle of the Army and Marines) with a blade bayonet, and with it he parried and snapped the new '03's bayonet in one blow. Springfield sheepishly retrofitted blade bayonets afterward. Why the hell can't we get another president like him?

Civilize them with a Krag!

huh, funny how things come up at the same time, I was just reading last night that TR was the first president to win a Nobel Peace prize.

Then, totally off topic, I was sitting in a concert last night, it was 4 pieces by one composer, he was there and chatted with the audience....anyhoo, so it was some pretty modern, not neccesarily pretty stuff and in the middle of one piece my brain starts going "badgers, badgers, badgers....." DAMN YOU, FRANK J!! though, actually, it kind of helped make the piece bearable. hmmmmm.

Really? I thought we were talking about Michael Moore.

My favorite TR quote: If I must choose between righteousness and peace, I choose rightousness."

Its one of four stellar quotes in the great lobby of the American Museum of Natural History - the one his father founded and he perfected.

I don't have a problem with FDR, at least he made an effort to soften the bitter pill of the Depression, but everyone knows Teddy is the original "tough guy" president who was willing to put military force out there and make American interests known. One thing that I respect Teddy for was his conservationism. I believe the environment should not be wasted (Although of course humans come first.) and Teddy Roosevelt's contributions to the cause of conservationism really helped protect an environment unlike any other in the world. It's a shame to see "environmentalists" today are more concerned with stuffing their wallets and frightening people than protecting the earth. From my point of view, a president like Roosevelt would not have stood for such a thing, and definately not John Muir.
