Ronin Thought of the Day
Posted by Frank J. at 08:16 AM | View blog reactions | Comments (14)

This is from A Book of Five Rings (Go Rin No Sho) written by the great samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi.

Cut and Slash

To cut and slash are two different things. Cutting, whatever form of cutting it is, is decisive, with a resolute spirit. Slashing is nothing more than touching the enemy. Even if you slash strongly, and even if the enemy dies instantly, it is slashing. When you cut, your spirit is resolved. You must appreciate this. If you first slash the enemy's hands or legs, you must then cut strongly. Slashing is in spirit the same as touching. When you realize this, they become indistinguishable. Learn this well.

Meditate on this and then defeat your enemies.

You know, I bet the reason that the Japanese outlawed firearms when they first encountered them is that it's hard to be philosophical about how one uses a rifle.
"To shoot your enemy and to put holes in him with bullets are two different things. No, seriously, you guys. I mean it. Hey, stop laughing! That's it, guns are so banned!"

It can be hard to kill an enemy with slashing. You can, however, leave some very painful and embarassing slices all over them. It's a way of saying, "I could kill you, but you are too pathetic. I will toy with you instead."
Ah, cruelty.

There is a story from the 1980's about a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism who lived in a rough part of Huston. Well two guys broke into his apartment at two different locations. He woke up and grabbed his samurai sword (a katana I think). He went into one room and ordered the guy to leave. He wouldn't so he slashed him diagonaly from between the right shoulder and neck to left hip bone. The guy imediately dropped. He went into the next room and the guy there saw this naked dude with a bloody sword comming and tried to dive out of the window he came in. He got a few inches of steel in his butt. Both of the bad guys lived. The one who was slashed, was slashed shallowly but it took hundreds of stiches to put him back together. The guy who took the thrust in the ass only made it about a block before he collapsed. I think the diagonal stroke when done as a cut is called the "scarf cutting" stroke. If done properly it will cut a man in half on the diagonal. Thus the difference between slashing and cutting.

This is almost as disturbing as when you all sit around talking about your guns.

One of the most famous stories of the Ronin was at the Sengakuji Temple. 47 Ronin took revenge against their master's killer, then died for their cause. Thought this might be interesting:

I like that, do you test the waters or jump into the deep pool?

If you first engage the enemy, you must then kick his ass...!!!

(Ahh, Don't mind me, I'm a little blood-thirsty this morning.... [probably PMS...])
