How Am I Doing?
Posted by Frank J. at 08:37 AM | View blog reactions | Comments (31)

I made changes to my blog templates over the weekend, and now I hear that some in Mozilla (didn't he fight Mothra?) can't see the right sidebar. I pretty much exclusively use IE even though I know better, so I'd like to hear if any of the other browsers are having problems displaying my webpage.

Not on-topic, but funny:

First!

Also not on topic, but I have nowhere else to put it. A plea to Democrats. Good stuff. As for browsers, yeah, I still use IE. I know, bad me and all that. I'll get around to changing browsers eventually. Maybe.

Something's not right with the display in Mozilla...IE looks fine. For whatever reason, the page does not adjust itself the width of my browser on screen. (Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2 1280x1024 screen, browser about 600x1000, Win 2k)

HTH.

#3 - Posted by: MMW on July 22, 2004 08:53 AM

Firefox 0.9.2, no right column. Content still good.

#4 - Posted by: Nick on July 22, 2004 09:06 AM

It didn't look right in Netscape till I swapped out one of the hamsters.

What's so bad about IE anyway? All I hear about is how lousy it is, but no one ever gives examples.

#5 - Posted by: Mr. Bubble on July 22, 2004 09:06 AM

It's not a template issue. In your Frank Answers post, you've got a long google link which is forcing the column's width out far enough to accomodate it. I checked a few of the permalinks on other posts, and they looked fine. The permalink for that particular post, however, has the same problem.

#6 - Posted by: No One of Consequence on July 22, 2004 09:14 AM

I am using Firefox, and things look ok to me.

I do have problems with coments in the permalink type display being too long, but I don't think thats something that can be fixed.

whats wrong with MS IE?
Yahoo News

Slashdot

now, I guess I will find out if raw HTML works in coments around here....

Frank, just download FireFox (its Mozilla's lightweight browser-only distribution). You can use it to test your site. Its free and relatively small. All of us Linux-users will really appreciate it.

(BTW I've chastised you for this before, but its a DAMN SHAME that any CMU graduate doesn't use Linux... They should consider revoking your degree until you switch!)

#8 - Posted by: DNice on July 22, 2004 09:26 AM

Long comment lines with no spaces has always been a problem; I wish I could ban that.

I fixed that long google link (which IE breaks into two lines but maybe other browsers don't). Can everyone see the right sidebar now?

#9 - Posted by: Frank J. on July 22, 2004 09:27 AM

Yeah. But then again, I always could.

#10 - Posted by: Trucido on July 22, 2004 09:29 AM

Wow! Now that's service!

Looks good from here.

#11 - Posted by: No One of Consequence on July 22, 2004 09:31 AM

Futility,

Thanks for the info.
Wouldn’t running a spybot program in your autoexec fix that?
Example:

#12 - Posted by: Mr. Bubble on July 22, 2004 09:40 AM

Nobody has mentioned Opera but the page looks good in Opera 7.5

#13 - Posted by: unkleremis on July 22, 2004 09:42 AM

I use Firefox, and I had that problem a couple days ago, but it's all better now.

#14 - Posted by: Rustmeister on July 22, 2004 10:10 AM

Reading this through a TP1 connection at work and using IE. I have to scroll right to see all the screen.

#15 - Posted by: Steve Wilkerson on July 22, 2004 10:11 AM

Don't know diddly about any of this. I'm, however, having a hell of a time opening the "comments" section. It use to pop up in a separate window when I clicked on it. Now, I have to right mouse click and select "open". "open in new window" does not work.

#16 - Posted by: tacberry on July 22, 2004 10:32 AM

Increase your screen's pixel count. I can see everything just fine at 1024 x 768 on a 15" monitor.

#17 - Posted by: Trucido on July 22, 2004 10:34 AM

That last one was directed to Steve Wilkerson.

#18 - Posted by: Trucido on July 22, 2004 10:35 AM

Hey, as someone who used to run a big web site, I strongly suggest you install mozilla and opera and use them to check out how your site looks.

The problem is that none of the browsers (and I mean "none") fully implement the HTML spec but they all implement different parts of it. Things that look slicker than pig snot in Mozilla can be completely disfunctional in IE and vice-versa.

#19 - Posted by: Mike Heinz on July 22, 2004 10:36 AM

Layout looks fine in NS7.1 on XP (or more accurately Netscape 7.1
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 (ax) but only if you're being picky.

Mike is absolutely correct, always check your latest Hawkinsian insight in multiple browsers. The companies seem to go out of their way to make sure something that theirs does well, the other guy's will screw up, particularly if it is on the edge of the overall specs.

So, to recap: Layout - a-ok.

Now get to work on that content issue...

#20 - Posted by: Wind Rider on July 22, 2004 11:05 AM

works with Safari, FYI

#21 - Posted by: Elliot Temple on July 22, 2004 11:43 AM

It renders find in my Firefox version 0.8, guess I should upgrade.

#22 - Posted by: dan on July 22, 2004 01:35 PM

Until today, and for about the past week, opening your website would crash my browser. I use firefox .91 and have had very few problems, with your site being the exception. I can see the right side-bar, now that your site loads.

#23 - Posted by: kulh on July 22, 2004 01:40 PM

All fine here on mac IE at home, and on pc at work.

I found this in a Google search Frank...

search: "What is a muckadoo?"

(it wasn't in Mirriam-Websters.com, and it looks like you are the best top listed result.
You are officially the authority on muckadoos.)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=what+is+a+muckadoo%3F

#24 - Posted by: Joshua on July 22, 2004 01:52 PM

ok nevermind figured out all i needed to know.

...and I have the nerve to call myself a geek. I am ashamed. I finally read the post with the definition.

Um... I'm using Mozilla Firefox and I can see it just fine.

Also, for the record, that doesn't make me a linux user. I can't even mount a drive (although I can Man Woman like a pro). Wow, that sounds bad.

#26 - Posted by: Flakbait on July 22, 2004 02:15 PM

you're good now, boss.

#27 - Posted by: sarahk on July 22, 2004 06:41 PM

Same as Nick said above about Firefox, with the addition of a total crash of Firefox on occasion when I first arrive here.

#28 - Posted by: JusTalkin on July 22, 2004 10:54 PM

It's something with the javascript AFAIK.

#29 - Posted by: OverlordQ on July 23, 2004 05:33 PM

it's slow as heck to load (compared to your previous design)

could you change your links to a color that contrasts a little more sharply with black?

#30 - Posted by: unkonwn on July 24, 2004 12:29 AM

mozilla firefox (this does make me a linux user)

except for loading slowly, the page renders just fine

Flakbait, "man woman", ha

but you can't mount a drive...maybe this will help:

# mount -t blonde -o 34b,24,34 /dev/woman /home/bed/me
