Video Games Cause Violence
Saw Michelle Malkin on FOX and Friends this morning. Lucky. That's my favorite show (I watch it every morning); I want to be on it. Guess I'd have to write some serious politicial books, but, with all the research, that sounds hard. Maybe I should just write another parody FOX and Friends transcript. Who's up for that? What was I going to talk about? Oh yeah, what is known as the XBOX killings. Now, in the videogame wars, I chose the GameCube, which, unfortunately, no one would kill over. Hey, I'm a Nintendo loyalist; I need my Mario and my Zelda. Anyway, do you think this whole incident will be good or bad for XBOX? On one hand, this gives proof that videogames cause violence. On the other hand, it's a great marketing opportunity. "XBOX - the game system you'd kill for" Well, discuss amongst yourselves. 57 Responses To "Video Games Cause Violence"
Wow. I like X-Box and all, but I think these guys may have been a little excessive in their venting. (Frank, X-Box is the best system, but Zelda is the all-time greatest series of games ever made.) #1 - Posted by: Trucido on August 10, 2004 08:47 AMXbox is awesome, get Splinter Cell on the Xbox..lots of terrorists to kill. #2 - Posted by: vinny on August 10, 2004 08:52 AMI just got the sequel to Splinter Cell recently. Incidentally, the last two GameCube games I bought (Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Spiderman 2) both use "hippy" as an insult in them. #3 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 10, 2004 08:55 AMYou know, the third Splinter Cell is supposed to come out this year. The review I read said that it blows the first two out of the water :-) #4 - Posted by: Trucido on August 10, 2004 09:04 AMI think it would have been better if they had killed their landlord because he gave them their games back, but they were all scratched up. Better as in funnier. But that's just me. #5 - Posted by: FightingFido on August 10, 2004 09:23 AMWHat's wrong with Space Invaders, you damn spoiled kids? "Move down, reverse direction, increase speed!" #7 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 10, 2004 09:35 AMI remember, way back in The Before Time, when we sat around campfires and sang songs of love and peace. There was no war, no murder, no crime... all was perfect in the World... Just an Utopian existence with all our fellow Mankind and animals... Then Pong was released... #8 - Posted by: Faith+1 on August 10, 2004 09:37 AMHeh, Faith+1 said Pong... #9 - Posted by: Trucido on August 10, 2004 09:39 AMYes, no violence ever resulted from pick games of basketball or professional ice hockey for that matter in THE BEFORE TIME. All was peaceful coexistance. Ahh, I savor my golden memories of singing kumbaya and holding hands and traipsing down gumdrop lane down to the magic num num tree. {sigh} #10 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 10, 2004 09:46 AMWell, I can attest that the introduction of a PS2 to MY home has increased the violence ... One PS2 ... 5 children ... I need the UN here to help me sort out the conflict. Of course, if they send in the French, I'm sicing my German Shepherd on them ... #11 - Posted by: Carin on August 10, 2004 10:04 AM I remember the Land Before Time because I'm officially an Old Fart. Bad Peter, bad! We're talking about "The Before Time", not the *gag* Land Before Time *cough*. (Even as a kid, I thought those movies were retarded.) #13 - Posted by: Trucido on August 10, 2004 10:11 AMFrank - I love the Futurama reference, that episode with the What if machine, correct? What if life was more like a video game? Hilarious! Am I the only one who really gets tired of the ol' video game debate? I have been hearing it since I was 4. I still have my Atari 2600 (although I don't need to haul it out anymore - most game systems have Activision best of for the PS2, etc.) I still own a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Nintendo 64 (Blast Corps is a gem) Playstation, Playstation 2, Game Boy Advance. I will eventually buy a Gamecube. While I like the Xbox, I probably will not buy one, I have too many systems already! I can't imagine any mass murder being good for business, outside of PP, who seems to profit from it. I don't think video games cause violence, I think it is a combination of parent neglect more than anything. I have been playing video games since I was 4, and have not killed anyone yet, because I know there is a big difference between fantasy violence and reality. I still will never forget that day when I was in 6th grade camp, when the Michigan State Police came out and brought out a variety of weapons, including knives, bows and arrows, and guns. They demonstrated on watermelons what would happen with each weapon. The final weapon was an acutal M-16, and it taught me everything I needed to know about what things do to watermelons, or people. Parents should monitor what their kids play, they should play it with them, an evaluate. Same thing with computers, and with TV, and movies, and tell them what is the truth, that kind of thing. The last thing we need is a nanny government telling people what they can or cannot do. I can't even go to Burger King anymore without feeling like the government is going to send out the fat police or something. Ugh.... where is my bag of cheese popcorn? #14 - Posted by: Scott Sanburn on August 10, 2004 10:16 AMI'm a PC game kind of guy myself. Right now I'm working through 007: Nightfire. Damn that's a hard game, those levels are so freakin' hard to navigate. Oh well. Besides, the Mechwarrior series is still better on computer then any other system. #16 - Posted by: Tim E. on August 10, 2004 10:49 AMYou crazy kids with your videogames. Back in my day, all we had to play with were sticks and rocks, and we were happy. #17 - Posted by: Exile on August 10, 2004 10:57 AMXBox? GameCube? Pshaw. Back in my day we had the SNES and that was good enough for us, by cracky! Chrono Trigger > pretty much any FPS, IMGO. If I wanna shoot something, I'll go down to the firing range, thankyewverymuch. #18 - Posted by: AWG on August 10, 2004 11:02 AMFrank, I remember you had a couple of pc game reviews in the past. Ever tried Farcry? Exile, I still play with sticks and rocks. Hitting rocks with baseball bats does a number on them (the bats). And launching them (the rocks) with miniature catapults is fun, too. AWG, I've got an NES emulator and all of the games on my pc. Go Zelda! #19 - Posted by: Trucido on August 10, 2004 11:12 AMDo you mean "the Before Time" as in Mad Max:Beyond Thunderdome -- or -- South Park doing a parody of Children of the Corn / Mad Max / whatever the heck else? I think it would be bad for xbox if they physically used it to bludgeon the people. #20 - Posted by: gaskar on August 10, 2004 11:31 AMYou missed the most obvious of them all -- XBox - It's to Die For! #21 - Posted by: BKAYEL on August 10, 2004 11:35 AMI'll betcha the guy that killed over his Xbox stole it in the first place. He didn't have time for a job what with all his visits to his parole officer. Jerk. #22 - Posted by: jonag on August 10, 2004 11:38 AMFrank J says: Sweet. I got all that came out so far (It was out when I was in my 4 jobs - going to college full time haze) I love it when hippies get beaten up or consumed by aliens - but it depresses me that they are still around in 3000. I also got Batman: The Animated Serives Volume 1 - Finally! I had bought all the movies (Mask of the Phantasm, Mystery of the Batwoman, Batman Beyond, etc.) and the DVD's of a few episodes each previously. Very good series if you like Batman. AWG Says: XBox? GameCube? Pshaw. Back in my day we had the SNES and that was good enough for us, by cracky! Chrono Trigger > pretty much any FPS, IMGO. If I wanna shoot something, I'll go down to the firing range, thankyewverymuch Ah, yes, the classic Squaresoft role playing games. I think my all time favorite game is Final Fantasy 3 (FF6 in Japan) on the SNES. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF2, etc. I have them all on the Playstation too - in case the cartridges go out on me. There are some other great games on the SNES - Aerobiz is a great capitalism game, UN Squadron (even if I detest the UN!), Super Metroid, Super Mario All Stars, Legend of Zelda, etc. Good times, I still play them when I have time. I have had my share of rocks and sticks too - but I preferred LEGO items. Wait, I still do! : ) Speaking of which, I am going to Brickfest Thursday - www.brickfest.com The biggest gathering of AFOL's (Adult Fans of LEGO) out there - I can't wait! : ) #23 - Posted by: Scott Sanburn on August 10, 2004 11:38 AMHey! Where's Sarahk's link update??? I have to actually type it in. Bummer. #24 - Posted by: jonag on August 10, 2004 11:40 AMTee-hee, spacemonkey said kumbaya. While Legos rule, I have vivid memories of what would happen to us kids when Dear Mother would step on one. Therefore, until my kids understand, "no-pickie-uppie-means-no-money-honey", it's Mega Blocks all the way!! #25 - Posted by: Wolf's Dawn on August 10, 2004 12:53 PMThere is also an arcade version of UN Squardon, and for some reason the Japanese Version of it is called US Navy ..Hmmm. I myself still have a 2600, NES, Genesis, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and Playstation. But my Xbox plus Mod Chip combo, equal all the emulated old school gaming I'd ever need. #26 - Posted by: Degenx on August 10, 2004 12:55 PMyeah, back in my day, all we had were rocks and sticks and you'd get hit in the head with a rock and fall over and get a stick in your eye. And everyone would point and say, "oh, look! he got a stick in his eye" and you'd try to chase after them, but it was hard to tell how close you were cause you only had one eye and a gaping bleeding hole in your face, and that was the way it was and WE LIKED IT! #27 - Posted by: maggie katzen on August 10, 2004 01:43 PM"UN Squadron" fans will be happy to know that the game is actually called "Area 88", and it's a license of an anime series about a bunch of mercenary pilots fighting in the Middle East. The UN is nowhere to be found, as it should be. This explains the game's otherwise baffling "paid by the kill and buy your own weapons" mechanic. #28 - Posted by: SparcVark on August 10, 2004 01:50 PMCounter-Strike for the PC, sorry thats all I play (any one who has been to my root knows that). But I do miss my NES, it finaly gave up the ghost about year ago, and I have yet to find an emulator for Ghangis Khan. #29 - Posted by: Monster Kabasue on August 10, 2004 02:02 PMYeah, video game violence is one of the reasons I decided to go to law school - stupid people trying to sue id software after Columbine because those kids played "Doom". And all the laws that were being considered over the last few years - making it a criminal offense to sell a rated "M" game to a kid under 18? And not a similar offense on "R" rated DVD's? I just got my 'Cube about two months ago, no Xbox or PS2 for me - (although it means missing out on Kingdom Hearts). And I can honestly say that no video game has driven me to kill yet. There was one time I was in a killing rage over Magic: the Gathering, but luckily there were no sharp objects nearby, and it went away after I pictured Godzilla's foot stepping on the guy. (I creamed him in the duel, too). Dittos on the Chrono Trigger. #30 - Posted by: Zach on August 10, 2004 02:19 PMMan, Xbox is pretty laid back to me. When my friends and I used to play MarioKart on the 64 there was a guaranteed rage. I think we all broke at least two controllers over the span of a few years. #31 - Posted by: Indorphin on August 10, 2004 02:34 PMSomeone stole my Mario Kart 64 in college! I almost formed a posse! #32 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 10, 2004 02:47 PMWolfdawn said: While Legos rule, I have vivid memories of what would happen to us kids when Dear Mother would step on one. Therefore, until my kids understand, "no-pickie-uppie-means-no-money-honey", it's Mega Blocks all the way!! Hey, that's why you need a work area so you don't have to pick them up. ; ) As for Megablocks, I have a few of the sets, but the quality is just not there (They use recycled plastic, LEGO makes their own plastic). I do like the military lines though. TLC's policy on no violence is a little quirky 9Can someone say Star Wars and Wild West sets?), but it is a European company, after all, and that whole continent is quirky. The only time videogames have made me want to kill is when I found out that Rampage has over 700 levels. How the hell am I supposed to knock down that many buildings? #34 - Posted by: Jenno on August 10, 2004 05:22 PMI got an xBox from the president for Christmas of 68. I played it in Cambodia on my gunboat. It was just like getting shot at by Vietnamese and Cambodian. It was searing, searing good fun. #35 - Posted by: John Kerry on August 10, 2004 05:29 PMI think you've got it all wrong. I don't think this killing was inspired by video games at all, but by Saturday Night Live. Anyone remember Eddie Murphy reciting his jailhouse poem "Kill my landlord"? Seriously though, these guys killed 6 people in a dispute over an Xbox and some clothing? Someone tell these morons this is what small claims court was invented for. These thugs should get the Ted Bundy cell on Florida's death row like tonight. I think I'd even fire up ol' sparky for them before the election if I was Jeb. Oh, and if you are in Florida, please let everyone you know that these are the kind of people the Democrats want to let vote in state and federal elections. #36 - Posted by: twalsh on August 10, 2004 08:31 PMisn't everyone missing the main point here? YES to the Fox transcript. btw, i had to pause Michelle Malkin this morning to read your stinkin' hilarious editorial. i heart my DVR. #37 - Posted by: sarahk on August 10, 2004 08:54 PMthis never would have happened if the victims had been conservatives. it was 4 against 6 for gods sake. #38 - Posted by: Rikor on August 10, 2004 08:54 PMNovember 9th, I would use violence to play on that date. Hehe. #39 - Posted by: Halo 2 on August 10, 2004 09:37 PMLOL on the Eddie Murphy poem. I can't remember the words though...anyone? Scott, try to define the term "work area" to two toddlers or, if you have no point of reference there, try to define the Bush tax cut to Dem and you'll see my dilema. #40 - Posted by: Wolf's Dawn on August 10, 2004 09:48 PMDark and lonely on a summer's night Watchdog barking Kill my landlord! Slip in his window Then his house Got no reason Kill my Landlord! C-I-L-L (I have NO IDEA why I remember this skit/poem verbatim but I remember rolling around and laughing at it when it showed. One more piece of useless shit stuck in my head.) Huh, I must be old if I can remember the pre-videogame days! Better start taking my geritol I guess... At least after reading all these comments I don't feel so bad having an nes,snes,n64(waiting for gamecube to get REAL cheap before I buy it! gotta have my Metroid/Zelda/Donkey Kong fix!) ps1,ps2 (waited 'til the ps2 went down $100.00 Jak & Daxter are a hoot, of course need the final fantasy games (I just watch the boys play them now, I don't have 70+ hours to waste on those things - which means I am employed, that's a good thing.) xbox(The Oddworld Inhabitants changed platforms to xbox (Good Lord I was pissed when Lorne whats-his-face the creator of the series did that!) And I tell ya - if that little putz ever finishes the other Oddworld installments. He better frickin' do it on the current xbox system or there will be game related violence 'cause I will seek him out... take my old xbox system, and shove it up his sorry.... Ah, right... Must take happy pills now.... #42 - Posted by: LokiDoki on August 11, 2004 12:55 AMI believe that "...in the Before Time...in the Long Long Ago..." is from an original Star Trek episode, "Miri". At least that's what South Park was making fun of. Go Counterstrike...go DOOM3!! #43 - Posted by: Rogue428 on August 11, 2004 01:16 AMWolf's Dawn said: Scott, try to define the term "work area" to two toddlers or, if you have no point of reference there, try to define the Bush tax cut to Dem and you'll see my dilema. LOL! My apologies, I guess I am used to talking to adults about LEGO work areas as opposed to toddlers. I think my first LEGO specific area started when I was 5 or 6. I had a huge 2 bedroom area, it had a cut out where a desk was, and that is where my LEGO area was.

The less UN, the better. : ) This explains the game's otherwise baffling "paid by the kill and buy your own weapons" mechanic. Did the SNES version say that? Boy, time to play that again, I will certainly enjoy it more. #45 - Posted by: Scott Sanburn on August 11, 2004 09:48 AM"I believe that "...in the Before Time...in the Long Long Ago..." is from an original Star Trek episode, "Miri". Okay, that was stupid, but I had to get an MST3K Reference in there. I mean... Damn, ..it... it just... had. to be done... Okay...? #48 - Posted by: LokiDoki on August 11, 2004 01:47 PMThank you, Faith+1!! I don't know when I forgot that poem; used to say it all the time. Still cracks me up! #49 - Posted by: Wolf's Dawn on August 11, 2004 02:29 PM
Three years working on Atari arcade FIGHTING games, plus six or seven additional years plotting devious games to draw even younger innocent brains to the DARK SIDE... ALL cleverly marketed as innocent LEARNING CDs. How we fooled the parents! I grovel with shame at the memory of it. Now, the 12-step program is working. REALLY working. It’s been three and a half years since I had a steady job creating mind-rotting animation in Silicon Valley. Actually, I think it’s more the “globalization” effect, meaning the animation industry has run screaming and spurting arterial blood, away from the United States. Since I got married two days before the attack of 9/11, and started working as a sheep-tender on my bride’s ranch hidden in the fastness of the western mountain ranges, that sorta escaped my attention. Eventually fleeing the mutton, I learned of the industry’s evaporation later, along with the appearance of swarms of increasingly sophisticated game-devices. Evidently, they have taken control of society more thoroughly than any scheming VRWC ever could. Anyone remember Happy Face Buttons? Check the mouldering skeletons in Rwanda, and you will certainly find peeping from among those garden-tool chipped fibulas, the prototype circuit boards for today’s evil-incarnate X-BOXes. Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia--- likewise triggered by devilish electronic games. We don’t hear about ‘em because of the coverup. Yep. So when they talk about installing itty bitty circuits and chips in HANDGUNS that are supposed to prevent the WRONG person from firing the weapon... IT’S A BIG FAT LIE!!!!! They’re putting in X-BOX CHIPS to MAKE us shoot each other! Wow. I think I just figured out how to get this ankle bracelet thingie loose. Have a Nice Day! #50 - Posted by: David March on August 15, 2004 09:08 AMThere's 1 million trained killers going online every night. Everyone better watch out. blahahahahah yeppers.. this david march animates 'em also. :) #51 - Posted by: david march on September 17, 2004 03:51 AMi love video games personally.. I am the only female gamer that I know of in my county haha...but anyhow.. I like the violent ones also.. and I agree with some ppl on here.. they do not cause real life violence. They may be a factor yes, but the blame shouldn't totally be placed on them. Personally i think kids/adults/teens that commit crimes and violent crimes have something wrong upstairs to begin with. Drug usage has a factor in this also... hallucinating drugs as a matter of fact. That is what happend in the Dungeons and Dragons incident. The idiots that killed thier parents playing harmless D&D were pumped up on LSD's makeing them see their parents and the world around them as something else. So no video games should not be placed as the cause for violence. #52 - Posted by: Ashley Napier on September 22, 2004 06:42 PM3129 How can this all be right? These Parents who blame all of their kids problems on games."OH my son Johnny was such a good boy untill he played MANHUNT!" Bull Johnny was shooting dogs w/ his daady rifle long ago. I mean if your dumb enough to try and imitate mario by lighting your mouth on fire and attempt to spit fire balls then go ahead, but plsease quit blameing the games for your kids stupidity!!!!!! #56 - Posted by: Scubasteve on November 30, 2004 09:22 AMetryfhrfyutyfyhtyfhfygfytrtrr #57 - Posted by: jkzdhgfohdpuighpuhg on December 7, 2004 09:18 AMPost a comment
