Logically, This Should Be Funny...
Posted by Frank J. at 01:26 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (22)

Seems like this whole McGreevey thing should be funny, but my initial reaction and still current reaction is to feel sorry for his wife and children (and to a much, much lesser extent, McGreevey himself).

I guess I'll just keep making jokes about Kerry. Did I tell you about the time I once met him in person and then beat him in a kung fu fight? The incident is seared - seared - into my memory...

If my husband had done that, I would not be standing by his side with a smile on my face. Weird. Sad.

She knew she was a beard. I guess maybe she just liked the idea of being the wife of a powerful man.

There was a lot of whispered speculation about his orientation going into the last election, but it was kept quiet. (That says a lot about his GOP opponents.)

The saddest thing is that his wife got pregant before the election in what some folks are saying was an effort to convince everyone that he was a "family man." If that is really the case, the man is a sleaze, using a child as a beard is terrible.

That's amazing Frank! It is seared in my memory that I kicked his ass outside a Denny's in Memphis in 1975. And I was only 6 at the time! Or wait, was that Cambodia? No, it was definately a Denny's. Maybe he gets those confused to! Perhaps in 1968 he was at a Denny's...

Hey this thing is not about being gay, thats a ruse, it is about incompetence. McGreedy tried to install his boy-toy as the NJ director of HomeLand Security at $100K per year. But, duh, the guy's not a US citizen, and couldn't get FBI security clearence let alone doesn't know a thing about homeland security. McGreedy appealed all the way to the President! The Gov. of NJ had such a low opinion of the safety of the citizens of NJ that he put his lover in such a sensitive job. Think about it, that's like Clinton making Monica the head of the CIA. McGreedy is also really Mob-ed up and accused of taking alot of Mob money as bribes.

#4 - Posted by: Connecticut Yankee on August 13, 2004 01:41 PM

Wait! That woman next to the NJ Governor. Is that . . .? Why, yes. Yes! It IS!! Benda OVER!!!!!

HI BENDA!!!! Been livin' the post-modernist life, lately?

#5 - Posted by: don on August 13, 2004 01:47 PM

It's funny, I was at a Sean Hannity book signing last february in NJ. While chatting with other conservatives there, one guy mentioned that he knew cops from the town where McGreedy was originally the mayor. They had told him that McGreedy had skeletons in his closet that would give Clinton a run for his money. Now I see they were right! LOL

i'm so sad for his wife. but my first reaction was to be angry with her for going out there with him HOLDING HIS HAND as he was about to announce that he's been cheating on her and lying to her for years. doormat. he should have gone out there wearing a pound of cover-up and massive sunglasses to cover the bruising.

then i calmed down and i'm just sad for her. i still think she acted like a doormat yesterday.

What a jerk!
Wife and kids...poor family

#8 - Posted by: Rob on August 13, 2004 02:53 PM

I hear ya sarahk, that woman put herself out there yesterday as an example of how a woman should be treated??!! It made me sick.

I'm a tax paying citizen of NJ and am horrified that this man put my family's life in jeopardy by appointing his unqualified lover in charge of our safety here. It's beyond despicable, and anyone who goes out saying 'Why did he resign? Can't we have a gay gov? It is 2004 ya know!' (For instance: I asked the gas station guy if he heard the news...he said "Yeah, McGreevey's gay.) is missing the BIIIIG picture here. I certainly don't care if he's gay - it's the actions he took involving his lifestyle that I abhor.

As Conn Yankee pointed out, this has nothing to do with sexual orientation. His resignation has to do with the fact that he is a typically corrupt NJ Democrat politician.
He's offically resigning on Nov 15, meaning that the deadline for a special election for the next Gov will have passed, negating the opportunity for the people of NJ to select who will govern. One of McG's political cronies will now be Gov for another 2 years.
Two years ago the NJ Democratic Machine pulled a similar stunt when Toricelli dropped out of the race because of?.. that's right, corruption, and got Lautenberg elected to the Senate, even thought the deadline for having another candidate on the ballot had passed.

I pity his children. I would pity his wife, but her 'Stand By Your Man' act makes her an accesory after the fact. McGreevey is scum - not only did he cheat on his wife (wives?), subject his children to ridicule, and disgrace his office, but his blatantly political maneuvering plumbs the depths of corruption and depravity. When it comes down to it, I don't know why he's resigning - he seems perfectly suited to his state.

#11 - Posted by: aelfheld on August 13, 2004 03:24 PM

I agree with you sarahk. If I had to hear ANY of that about my husband, I would be violently ill. I could never hear him announce it publicily to the entire world. Imagine how embarrassing. For both of them. It's his fault though (about the cheating)

#12 - Posted by: Jen on August 13, 2004 03:36 PM

Yet NJ will still vote for Kerry come Nov. what a bunch for rubes.

#13 - Posted by: Josh on August 13, 2004 04:08 PM

My bet is the wife new about this for a long time...she was getting what she wanted out of the relationship. And her "stand by your man" act is similarly mercenary I assure you. This woman is no more a patsy than Hitlary Clinton, who knew all about her husband all along. Don't feel sorry for her at all. Feel sorry for the kids.

But this resignation timeline is the real problem. It is so obviously being done to deprive the voters of input. The backlash needs to be loud and vehement. The chosen date is after the deadline for reelection? Hey deadlines can be extended. The Dems did it in St. Louis to keep the polls open after 7pm in 2000. The people can do it now. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lt Gov is just as worthless as this bozo. The people of NJ should revolt before they let this get shoved down their throats.

#14 - Posted by: Chris on August 13, 2004 04:25 PM

I think Nick nailed this one. I've done a little research over on FR, and there have been rumors of his "Kerry-ness" for some time. I'd wager a dollar to a donut (see Frank, you aren't the only one who can gamble) that McGreedy's marriage is merely a business deal(or bidness deal as the kids say). She'll get a nice fat check and he'll be free to...well...best not said really.

#15 - Posted by: Exile on August 13, 2004 07:18 PM

I also agree with sarahk about the wife but perhaps she wasn't trying to look like a doormat. It is possible she wanted her child to know that somehow everything was going to be okay. If Mommy can accept the fact that Daddy is gay, and Mommy can still be happy and normal, then maybe everything will turn out okay.

That's the only excuse a woman could have for not running him down with her Mercedes.

#16 - Posted by: Wolf's Dawn on August 13, 2004 09:42 PM

one word stolen from someone on here..........

SMACKTARD!!!!!!

#17 - Posted by: Joshua on August 14, 2004 12:26 AM

I don't know which is worse. The idea that this gal knew her husband was gay all along and went along with it for the nice shiney objects - or - That she had no idea until the big public announcement and is just playing nice for the kiddies sake.

It would take about a week for them to dig my husband out from under the pile of stuff I'd a done busted over his sorry head if he was to make this kind of announcement to me.

My philosophy is simple...

If you want to be straight: be straight.

If you want to be gay: Flame on! Get down with your gay self.

Ain't sure, riding the fence? Then Don't. Freaking. Get. Married! Pick a durn side of the sexual spectrum to hail from and just be it!

Okay, rant over now, Thank you!

Mrs. McGreevey is indeed a liberal icon; she embodies all that is true and noble in the feminist movement. Proud, independent and intelligent, she stands as a bulwark against the "stand by your man" servility of conservative women. Like Hillary Clinton before her, any young woman seeking a role model could do well to emulate her.

#19 - Posted by: Paul on August 14, 2004 11:08 AM

Paul...

I hope you're being sarcastic.

As for McGreely, why the FUCK did he get married if he was gay? To a woman, I mean? Go be the senator from Vermont or California, asshole, but this is just a dispicable situation from beginning to end. He must have just done it so he could claim to have "family values." BULL SHIT. Democrats are so disgusting, eegh.

Then again, remember Jack Ryan. I suppose I should be thankful that McGreely resigned, just as I was when Ryan did, especially since, because McGreely is a Dem, I wouldn't expect such a dignified act from him. Ryan's resignation was the honorable thing to do, and I'd say the same in McGreely's case...if I thought him to be a man of honor.

Democrats...no wonder they worship Clinton the way Republicans do Reagan. He's everything they ever wanted to be.

#20 - Posted by: antodav on August 15, 2004 03:45 PM

Gosh Antodav, whatever would make you think I was being anything less than serious? Ok, maybe I wasn't.

Yes, let us look at Ryan vs. McGreevey, as this is typical of Rep vs. Dem scandals. Ryan did not cheat on his wife, he did not lie to her, what he did do was suggest doing something that I consider sleazy, and she objected. And he did bow out. McGreevey cheated on his wife. He wasted taxpayer money and compromised the safety of this nation by appointing a completely unqualified guy to head up homeland security in NJ. McGreevey has *not* resigned. He promises to resign *after* the election, but I've already read stories where he is being urged not to do so. And I wouldn't put it past him to "graciously" bow to public pressure to remain in office.

Of course, a Republican wouldn't stand much of a chance in NJ anyway. So whether he resigns or not is kind of beside the point. But you never know, if the NJ state Democrats gave the public a chance to vote, you don't know what might happen.

...sorry if that sounded antagonistic, I'm just kind of PO'ed
