Ronin Thought of the Day
Today's wisdom comes from honorable samurai philosopher Dave Barry: The weightlifting competition I saw was the women's 63 kg class. I'm not sure whether this means the actual women weighed 63 kg or the weights they lifted weighed 63 kg. Or possibly the temperature in the weightlifting hall was 63 kg. There's no way to know for sure without finding out what a ''kg'' is, and my belief, as an American, is that if I have to start understanding the metric system, then the terrorists have won. Thanks to Best of the Web for pointing this one out.

I'm not sure what the lesson is there. Are you sure he's a samurai? #1 - Posted by: krakatoa on August 25, 2004 12:42 PMMetric sucks. The lessen is, countries that use the metric system lose wars. And cause us to crash Mars probes. And whine a lot. Personally, I think the first guy to decide that 5280 was a good round number for establishing how far a mile was was a genius. Just thinking outside the box. And had a sense of humor. And probably also had a few pints. #3 - Posted by: Chris on August 25, 2004 12:58 PMHe's back! Woo-hoo! Party! #4 - Posted by: Katie on August 25, 2004 01:12 PMThat was pretty funny. #5 - Posted by: craig1f on August 25, 2004 01:48 PMIs this the guy whose concert you went to see? The guy whose wee-wee and woo-woo rained on the tour boat in Chicago? #6 - Posted by: Beo on August 25, 2004 02:17 PMEwwww! That's horrible! Welcome back Frank & Sarahk! #8 - Posted by: CCinCali on August 25, 2004 02:37 PMIgnorance appalls me. I think it's cool how we tricked the rest of the world 25 years ago into thinking we would convert to the metric system, so they went ahead and spent all that money changing stuff, and then we were all like "PSYCH"! and didn't convert or anything. Heh. Bunch of losers. #10 - Posted by: Dave in Texas on August 25, 2004 03:12 PMThe only thing worse than the metric system is European table manners. Dan Patterson #11 - Posted by: Dan Patterson on August 25, 2004 03:22 PMIf God had intended us to use the metric system there would have only been ten Apostles. #12 - Posted by: Faith+1 on August 25, 2004 03:58 PMhehehe... I'm not religious Faith+1, but that was definitely funny. #13 - Posted by: krakatoa on August 25, 2004 04:28 PMheh heh. Americans are idiots. #15 - Posted by: on August 25, 2004 05:13 PMThank God, Frank is back!!!! I missed you so much that I even named a fan after you. The air conditioning went out in my classroom, and the principal provided me with an old, noisy, rickety, oscillating fan. The students were complaining about the noise, and I said (in jest) that it was because the fan wanted a name. I told all the kids that it was "Frank the Fan"; all the kids said "Hi, Frank" and waved at it....AND THE NOISE STOPPED COMPLETELY AT THAT MOMENT! Now the air is fixed, but the kids keep asking where Frank is. Don't go away again, Frank...who knows WHAT I'll name after you next. *Grin* #16 - Posted by: DixieDarlin' on August 25, 2004 05:20 PM"Americans are idiots." certainly appears that a pretty large percentage of us are. But at least we aren't Froggystani! That's got to count for something, huh? #17 - Posted by: krakatoa on August 25, 2004 05:37 PMProud to be an American Idiot! DUUUUUUUHHHH lol at Bob Now SK that sounds like denial to me. #19 - Posted by: Joshua on August 25, 2004 07:55 PMWe should disregard all comments that are anonymous IMHO. Coward. #20 - Posted by: jonag on August 25, 2004 07:58 PMWay back when they changed "cycle" to "Hertz" they claimed that it was to eliminate the confusion between a discrete cycle and cycles per second. The best response I saw was that if you could not determine the difference by the context, you wouldn't know what to do with the answer anyway. Yup. We're idiots. You can tell by looking at our science, technology, military, industry, inventiveness, literature, art, culture, entertainment, philosophy, and achievements... Of course, if we're idiots, I really don't want to know where the rest of the world rates. Must be right up there with a slightly stale crumpet soaking in red wine... Orion #22 - Posted by: Orion on August 26, 2004 01:35 AMAmericans are idiots? What's the proof? A measuring system based on the limitation of only being able to count on your fingers and toes? FWIW, I use my fingers to count in binary...can get up to 1024 on my hands that way... #23 - Posted by: Faith+1 on August 26, 2004 09:55 AMHeh. Faith +1. If you count in binary on your fingers, I give our trolls a number 4. #24 - Posted by: Andi on August 26, 2004 11:22 AM"Heh. Faith +1.
