Know Thy Enemy: Coral vs. King Snake
Posted by Frank J. at 12:41 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (45)

On Monday, since I still didn't have any power, I decided to take down some storm windows to let some light in my house. After laying one of the metal sheets on the ground, a brightly colored creature crawled out from under it. It was a snake colored red, yellow, and black. I knew it was either the venomous coral snake or the harmless king snake, but forgot how to tell the difference. I vowed then and there that, once I learned how to tell them apart, I would make sure to never forget again.

I decided the best way to remember things, despite my poor singing abilities, was a song. So, that night, after getting info from SarahK, by candlelight I wrote a song about it.

Want to hear it?

Here it goes...

Coral vs. King Snake Song

Wish I could hear it, but I just got like this gibberish HTML code that looks heiroglyphics except not. Lol.

#2 - Posted by: Jen on September 29, 2004 12:44 PM

Franks best impersonation of Stephen Hawking yet!

#3 - Posted by: gibsonrlz on September 29, 2004 12:48 PM

aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
now i will have this song in my head the rest of the day.
Must find snake to test new knowledge....

#4 - Posted by: jhar on September 29, 2004 12:49 PM

Frank, old boy. You need to do a music video with SarahK doing funky backups.

#5 - Posted by: Exile on September 29, 2004 12:50 PM

Hahahah!
HAHAHAH!
Hahahah!
HAHAHAH!

WOOOOOOOO funny stuff.

Great song! You're the next Sinatra, Frank... Er - I mean Frank, you're the next Sinatra, not you're the next Sinatra comma Frank. Pretty much I'm saying you'll be like Sinatra, Frank, but his name is also Frank, which is why I'm confused.

#6 - Posted by: Reed the Viking on September 29, 2004 12:55 PM

Rarr! Getting funky code again! This sucks! Urge to get new computer getting stronger... Must pay of Best Buy purchase for camcorder first, and some of the Mastercard bill! Fu-- udge....!!!

Yer girlfriend is hot

#8 - Posted by: Led Boots on September 29, 2004 01:00 PM

Oh,

And the problem with the Coral Snakes, is that they do not have the Diamond shaped head like other poisonous snakes that lets you know that they are poisonous. So until you figure out the difference, run like hell when you see one, or shoot the F*ck out of it until it is Snake puree!

#9 - Posted by: LokiDoki on September 29, 2004 01:02 PM

Red touch black, poison lack
Red touch yellow, kill a fellow.

But I think American Idol better watch out for Frank J.

If you can get close enough, you can look at the eyes. Non-poisonous snakes have round pupils like we do, but poisonous ones have verticle slits like that most evil of all creatures, the cat.

#10 - Posted by: Chris on September 29, 2004 01:20 PM

Was that Chomps singing? or you, Frank?

#11 - Posted by: LynnGunn on September 29, 2004 01:38 PM

Led Boots,
Yep, pretty much.

#12 - Posted by: Frank J. on September 29, 2004 01:45 PM

You know, it was the "Shebang" that really brought that song home for me.

#13 - Posted by: Carin on September 29, 2004 01:56 PM

Is there some way to prevent ever having to listen to something like this again in the future? Clasping the coral snake to my breast would be less painful. Oops that was an asp wasn't it.

I honestly thought a chimpanzee rapper had escaped from the zoo.

#14 - Posted by: Roy on September 29, 2004 01:57 PM

led boots & frank, :)

i heart your song, frank.

#15 - Posted by: sarahk on September 29, 2004 02:07 PM

hehehe, that was a laugh I needed. nice work, frank

#16 - Posted by: meghann on September 29, 2004 02:10 PM

Red and black, friend of Jack
Red and yellow, kill a fellow.

...is how I've heard it.

How about putting the song into a normal audio format, such as MP3 or WAV? Even Ogg-Vorbis would be better than WMA. :-/

#17 - Posted by: Spetiam on September 29, 2004 02:11 PM

...and that's Frankj, going to the top of the charts with a bullet (large caliber of course!)
Maybe next time you could give us a little Sinal Tap.
"Big Bottom! Big Bottom. Talk about bum cakes my babes got 'em!"

Frank....please stick do drawing cartoons...

#19 - Posted by: ThirstyTank on September 29, 2004 02:39 PM

The easiest is, coral snakes have a black nose.

#20 - Posted by: bob on September 29, 2004 03:14 PM

[sniff] That was beautiful, Frank dear. Simply beautiful. Made all the more beautiful when I take your dire situation into consideration.

#21 - Posted by: IowaSoccerMom on September 29, 2004 03:34 PM

If it bites you and you survive, it's a king snake.
If it bites you and you die, it's a coral snake.

See, it's easy.

#22 - Posted by: Bob in Feenicks on September 29, 2004 04:58 PM

dat shit was tight yo.

#23 - Posted by: joe cool on September 29, 2004 05:29 PM

King snake? King snakes are black and maybe yellow, no red at all.

Milk snakes look like coral snakes.

#24 - Posted by: cerebron on September 29, 2004 05:37 PM

Not to confuse the issue, but it also could have been a Florida scarlet snake, also.

Did the red and black strips go all around the body?

#25 - Posted by: JFH on September 29, 2004 05:44 PM

I'm shaking my head. That was VERY funny.

#26 - Posted by: Boudicca on September 29, 2004 06:09 PM

I quote Rod (or was it Todd) From the Simpsons, "Oh, my frikkin ears."

#27 - Posted by: rightwingduck on September 29, 2004 06:14 PM

Frank said gay - HA.

Seriously, I want that minute and 33 seconds of my life back - NOW!

/cowers in fear

#28 - Posted by: Lou on September 29, 2004 06:15 PM

I'm from the upper mid-west and even EYE could have told them apart-see spetiams post.*smirk* If you had to "get" a poisonous snake, a coral snake was better than most. they'll go out of their way to AVOID people. Glad your encounter turned out well.

sorry, who can keep this poem straight when under stress anyhow??

Black and yellow, kill a fellow, black and red, you be dead.

Anything you don't understand, kill it.

#30 - Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 29, 2004 08:51 PM

good song by the way. thankyewthankyewverrymuch

#31 - Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 29, 2004 08:59 PM

Anybody ever tell you that you sing like Jed Clampett? :-P

#32 - Posted by: Pam on September 29, 2004 11:35 PM

that was seriously cute.

#33 - Posted by: heather on September 30, 2004 12:07 AM

We also need songs for identifying aquatic life forms. Songs like this one:

Oh, what kind of an eel
Is long, brown, with big teeth,

It's a Moray!
It's a Moray!

#34 - Posted by: punslinger on September 30, 2004 04:20 AM

Don't quit your day job (presuming you have one). I learned that the bad snake always has a black nose. I better go look that up before one of the red nosed ones kills me.

#35 - Posted by: Guy on September 30, 2004 09:49 AM

"Interesting" song there. The standard short version:

Red on black, you're ok Jack.
Red on yellow will kill a fellow.

Proceed.

#36 - Posted by: Turkeyhead on September 30, 2004 10:48 AM

To the tune of "That's Amore":

When you're wading in a creek
and an eel bites your cheek

That's a moray!

#37 - Posted by: Mr. Fu on September 30, 2004 04:49 PM

Yeah, poor singing ability sure does cover it

#38 - Posted by: Steven on October 2, 2004 06:17 AM

coral snakes do usually go out of their way to avoid people. another help is that they usually can't bite through human skin in one fell swoop. they need to chew, since their mouths are too small and their teeth (or fangs, or whatever the hell they're called in snakes) aren't long enough to puncture the skin.

or so i was told by the army. i can't say that is knowledge gleaned from personal experience.

Filipinos love a free ride. Well, who would want to pay for something
one can get for free, right? But there are some very strange people
sending me e-mails lately. Two were pleas for advice on marriage
annulment. One was for a logo of the Koalisyon ng Nagkaisang Pilipino
(KNP), of which Fernando Poe Jr. is the standard-bearer.

I was nice to the women asking for advice on marriage annulment. But,
please, no more. Just because a lawyer blogs about her opinions doesn't
mean she is offering legal advice for free. Enough.

To the person asking for a logo of the KNP... does it look like I am
supporting KNP? Hello? Read my posts before making such a ridiculous
request.

Just to be flippant for a moment:

Anyone else notice the similarities getween the Bush administration and the Borg?

"Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated into the New World Corporate Order!"

On a serious ending note, the Bush administration has just declared war on everyone else in space. I'm beginning to wonder if these clowns aren't rogue Scientologists who took L. Ron Hubbard's disgusting science-fiction vision of A future and are trying to make it THE future.

Blogging IS time consuming. I spend about 4 hours a day on Lost Remote, from content to maintenance to development. Add that to my full-time TV job and sleep is an oddity.

But it's worth it. I enjoy having an unfiltered voice -- which is a luxury in today's big media world.
