Question of the Day
Posted by Frank J. at 08:31 AM | View blog reactions | Comments (13)

So on Election Day, I'm supposed to vote for Sherrif (well, I might actually do the early vote thing this weekend so I can go straight to live blogging on the 2nd after work). But, as I found out at the range, most of the Sheriff's on the nightshift are punk kids whom I'm pretty sure no one voted for. So what Sheriff exactly am I voting for? The super-master Sheriff?

I really dunno.

What do you think?

You vote fot their boss.
Deputies are appointed by him.

Yeah, you're voting for the queen sherrif. The ones you run into on the street are just worker sherrifs, who fly around town collecting traffic fines and then return to the police station to make honey.

Okay, I might have gotten that mixed up with something else, but you get the idea.

I was going to comment, but sandor hit it right on the head.

You're voting for the political hack at the top. The rest are deputydrones as Sandor points out.

Vote for whichever one says "I am the Law!" and blows up cars for repeat parking violations.

master sheriff - he's like the master vampire, he makes all the little sheriffs and they all go about patrolling the night

#5 - Posted by: snarky on October 26, 2004 11:31 AM

Think Andy Griffith and Barney Fife. You're voting for Andy, and he hires Barney.

You vote for the Sheriff. Those guys are not Sheriffs, they are Deputies.

Vote well. County Sherrifs and Constables are the last Chief Law Enforcement Officers that are actually selected by The People. As such, they are actually accountable for their behavior, unlike municiple police chiefs and feds.

Sherrif RosCOOOOOOOE P. Coltrane...

"Come own, Flash, let's git theeyum Duke boys..."

Okay, here is the deal. The Sheriff is very much like the Police Commissioner, he's the political guy over the administration of county law enforcement and jails.
The actual top guy directly in the law enforcement end is the Chief Deputy, his job is much like that of the Chief of Police.
So you'll be voting for the Police Commissioner, as it were, the guy that sets policy. Civil Service rules in most jurisdictions keep the Sheriff from actually doing much hiring and firing, except at the top command levels.
Oh, there is a reason that the graveyard shift deputies lool like infants in most places, money. The odd way we finance our law enforcement means that the biggest part of the tax base in most counties is the lower-valued rural areas, most Sheriff's Departments don't pay very well compared to city and suburban police departments, state agencies and (especially) federal agencies. Most Sheriff's departments are staffed by two kinds of deputies, young guys right out of the law enforcemnt programs of colleges and private acadamies marking time until they have enough years of experience to get to the bright lights of town and older guys who've had it with the stress and increased danger connected with those bright lights.
You will find few retired deputy sheriff's who spent an entire career with one department, the ones that do spend a career in one department usually are in a department that has enough of a tax base to be somewhat competitive with other agencies. If an LEO finds a county like that being a senior deputy sheriff is the best job in law enforcement, anywhere.

Here in Maricopa County, we got Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Meanest Sheriff in America, or sumpin' like that.

He makes the convicts wear pink underwear and eat green bologna while living in tent cities. Makes them do chain-gangs and stuff.

However mean Sheriff Joe may be, you better not get between him and a TV camera. He'll run you over.

Having completed an absentee ballot, I was pretty annoyed that there was only one guy running for sheriff, incumbent (natuarlly) Jim Karnes. In addition to being a Democrat, I recall a time when he had ads (and thus competition), and he looked mean. Not in a RAR DEATH TO CRIME way, though. More like the kind of guy who would have one of his cronies kick your taillight out (or knee if on foot) for not calling him "sir."

You know, I kinda Miss Sheriff Hege out here in NC, but I don't get to vote for him no more since I am in stokes county & stuff. Okay so he screwed himself, bless his heart. But anyway, Frankelpuss, if you must vote for a douce bag, dig some dirt on him first like you did on Jonah & Glenn, you know?

Find out if they are a puppy-blender, cat batter or a monkey killer/assassin thingy before you vote. Oops, shutting up now, Left wingers are circling.. HELP!!!!

ACHKK!
