Feedback, Por Favor
Posted by Frank J. at 12:16 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (46)

There are now seven items in the IMAO for the Non-Deaf, all produced by Scott McCollum (I gave him my writing; all the voices, sound effects, etc. are made by him). We're hoping to try and get these on the radio, and really need your feedback. How would you rank them in order of funniness? What did you like? What didn't like?

Oh, and if you have any connections in the radio business...

Yo, definitely "Haliburton"! Hands down! No competition! "Haliburton" all the way!

#1 - Posted by: Editor on October 27, 2004 12:25 PM

Go for Haliburton and blended puppies then gotta love the townhall debate. "I can tell jokes too"

#2 - Posted by: msnpak on October 27, 2004 12:33 PM

Haliburton has redefined my life. I will throw a couple of bucks towards the radio bill if you need.

#3 - Posted by: AC on October 27, 2004 12:33 PM

I'd also go with Haliburton first, and the debate a near second. But they're both some of the funniest things I've heard in a while - keep 'em coming!

#4 - Posted by: yabob on October 27, 2004 12:52 PM

Absolutely Halliburton

#5 - Posted by: Mongo on October 27, 2004 12:52 PM

well, of the other bits, how would you rank them?

#6 - Posted by: Frank J. on October 27, 2004 12:53 PM

Not as high as Haliburton.

#7 - Posted by: jonag on October 27, 2004 12:55 PM

Okay... but in what order, or were they not funny at all.

#8 - Posted by: Frank J. on October 27, 2004 01:02 PM

1. Haliburton
2. Debates (though probably too long)'
3. foriegn support
4. Kerry shows dedication
5. what terrorists fear
6. talks to the kids
7. Hungry hippos

Suggestion: The Kerry voice needs changed. I understand that it is intentionally monotone, but it just isn't funny to me. Needs tweaked.

#9 - Posted by: gaskar on October 27, 2004 01:07 PM

Thanks, gaskar; that's exactly the feedback I'm looking for.

#10 - Posted by: Frank J. on October 27, 2004 01:11 PM

Haliburton first getting beat by 5 year olds last.

and I now a guy that operated a ham radio from his basement for a while.

#11 - Posted by: Josh on October 27, 2004 01:22 PM

1. Halliburton
2. Debates
3. Kerry commits war crimes
I wasn't in tune with the humor of the others, and I thought the Kerry and kids one was too long. Although I liked the 5 year olds beating him up and him crying that he wants a purple heart. :) But the run up to the punch line was too long. Can you do a pro Bush ad that doesn't make him seem like an idiot? I know that's the joke, but its not true. Humor is funny when based on truth. :) I love the new entries in IMAO for the Non-Deaf, thank you Frank!!

#12 - Posted by: MountainMama on October 27, 2004 01:31 PM

I'm not in radio, but I do a cable access television show (it's a political talk show format) in the battleground state of Ohio... I think the Halliburton bit was the funniest, but the Kerry war crimes one was a hoot as well.

#13 - Posted by: Matt Hurley on October 27, 2004 01:33 PM

btw, Frank, not to tease you (anymore), but i'm still working on that "Coolest IMAO reader ever" award. I'm not in the radio business, but I know some people who know some people who work for some people...

I'm the Editor and I approve this message.

#14 - Posted by: Editor on October 27, 2004 01:39 PM

funniest:
1) haliburton
2) debate
3) hippos
4) warcrimes
5) hair
6) foreign leaders

4-6 are about equal. i don't like career day.

PS the length shows up wrong on some of them, like the debate claims to be 8:34 but ends around 7min.

#15 - Posted by: Elliot Temple on October 27, 2004 01:49 PM

actually when i listen to it more, i like the foreign leaders one better. but i had trouble understanding what the accent people were saying the first time.

#16 - Posted by: Elliot Temple on October 27, 2004 01:51 PM

1. Hippos
2. Kerry Talks to the Kids
3. Haliburton
4. Debate
5. War Crimes
6. Foreign Support
7. Hair (What Terrorists Fear)

That's just the way I see things... And I promise to be and extra super dooper special good if you promise to keep doing this stuff every day and twice on Sundays!!!

A little justification: I laughed hardest at the "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot" and the "And I approved what I just said" lines.

"I seem to radiate some sinister evil..." "My doops... mean my constituents" "Become a lawyer as it will erode away your soul" "I want a Purple Heart for my owie" Those all got a good chuckle.

The paid for by bit at the end of the Haliburton ad was classic!

#17 - Posted by: Tremor on October 27, 2004 01:51 PM

Elliot,
That may be the player again. These were messed up on Winamp until I updated it (or played them in the Microsoft Media Player).

#18 - Posted by: Frank J. on October 27, 2004 01:53 PM

Thanks for the opinion so far, BTW,

Now more. More!

#19 - Posted by: Frank J. on October 27, 2004 01:54 PM

oh also in the debate, i thought the laughter soundtrack when kerry said he was consistent didn't sound quite right. i'm probably just used to sitcom laughter, and it was different...

my favorite part was when bush shot the audience guy and called it decisive leadership :)

#20 - Posted by: Elliot Temple on October 27, 2004 01:59 PM

Haliburton is the funnest so far. As far as getting on the radio goes have you tried to contact Glenn Beck yet? With his I heart Haliburton shirts, this would seem to be the perfect fit and opening towards more engagements? Or did you want to go another direction with the radio gig?

#21 - Posted by: Russ Hamilton on October 27, 2004 02:08 PM

Personally, I haven't done any contacting, but I have started listening to Glenn Beck since he's been mentioned by so many people.

#22 - Posted by: Frank J. on October 27, 2004 02:15 PM

Q: WHY DOES MY AUDIO CUT OFF BEFORE THE END OF THE COMMERCIAL?!

A: If you are using WinAMP, Quicktime, or Windows Media Player and the IMAO for the Non-Deaf audio abrubtly ends, please get the FREE upgrade for the player you use:

WinAMP:
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp505_full.exe

Apple Quicktime:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download

Microsoft Windows Media Player:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx

Also, if you have trouble understanding some of the audio (e.g. the "fast announcer" at the end of the ads), Windows users can follow along with the closed captioning with the latest version of Microsoft Media Player.

When playing the IMAO radio ads in Windows Media Player, follow these steps to turn on captions:

1. Click on the "Play" option on the menu at the top of the screen.
2. Click "Captions and Subtitles"
3. Choose the "On if Available" option to read the script of the IMAO radio ads.

#23 - Posted by: Scott on October 27, 2004 02:31 PM

1. halliburton
2. town hall
3. hippos
4. foreign leaders
5. hair
6. career day
7. must be the war crimes one because i don't remember it. but i'm sure it's funny.

#24 - Posted by: sarahk on October 27, 2004 02:37 PM

Haliburton is SO number one. The debate, I think, is next funniest, then the elementary school one.

#25 - Posted by: Cyruski on October 27, 2004 02:39 PM

even though I am 100% bush, my vote is for hippos, it's funny as hell

#26 - Posted by: Monster Kabasue on October 27, 2004 03:16 PM

1.) Halliburton
2.) War Crimes
3.) Debate (too long; it would cost a fortune to air that.)
4.) How to tell a coral snake from a king snake. ;-)

#27 - Posted by: Beo on October 27, 2004 03:27 PM

Either way, you better get on the ball! Less than a week!

#28 - Posted by: Beo on October 27, 2004 03:28 PM

Oh yeah, I like Hippos too. "I'm a Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot!"

#29 - Posted by: Beo on October 27, 2004 03:29 PM

1.Haliburton
2.Debate
3.Hungry Liberals
4.What Terrorists Fear
5.Forein Support
6.Kerry Shows his Dedication
7.Career Day w/ John Kerry

#30 - Posted by: Laura on October 27, 2004 04:26 PM

Halliburton.

#31 - Posted by: Nctltsf on October 27, 2004 05:07 PM

I think Hungry Liberals is by far the funniest. No.2 would have to be the Foregin Support.

#32 - Posted by: usafirstlady on October 27, 2004 05:36 PM

1. Halliburton
2. Hungry Hippos
3. Hair
4. Debates (pretty much tied with Hair)
5. Foreign Leaders
6. Career Day

Actually Career Day was kinda lame compared to the rest.

#33 - Posted by: Drew on October 27, 2004 06:05 PM

Yeah but JOHN KERRY is kinda lame... I wouldn't blame that on Frank J.

#34 - Posted by: Gordo on October 27, 2004 06:07 PM

1. Hair
2. Halliburton
3. War Crimes
4. Foreign Leaders
5. Kerry Career
6. Hippos
7. Debate

#35 - Posted by: aelfheld on October 27, 2004 06:28 PM

1. Halliburton
2. Debate
3. Hippos
4. Foreign Leaders
5. Career Day
6. War Crimes

Might change the EVIL voice at the beginning of Halliburton, so it won't seem like a joke at first.

The "King Snake" song was good too, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.
" da-dunt-da-dun-nunt King of what? "
" da-dunt-da-dun-nu King of wussiness! "

#36 - Posted by: AngryHippo on October 27, 2004 07:03 PM

The one with "I am John Kerry and I approve this messsage, and Mary Cheney is a lesbian."

#37 - Posted by: TEM on October 27, 2004 08:02 PM

Frank, I am the PD/morning host at a small station in Texas. We're not major market, but I'd love to air some of those bits if it's okay.

#38 - Posted by: Don Collett on October 27, 2004 08:09 PM

My favorites are the Halliburton and the hair ones (although I definitely seem to be in the minority on the hair vote). The debate was hilarious, though long--much much better than SNL's versions this time around (what a disappointment after the greatness of the 2000 debate sketches, says I).

#39 - Posted by: BerkeleyChick on October 27, 2004 09:57 PM

1. Halliburton
2. Hair
3. War crimes

#40 - Posted by: cheese on October 27, 2004 10:40 PM

i liked the lot.

best bit: "flipwaffler". a word that deserves to become widespread.

i think the funniest was the debate, mostly because it was longer and so had more.

hippo was great because it is the first actually funny bit of anti-bush humour i've ever seen.. and it's not as if i haven't been looking.

war crimes is probably the most effective as a real hit job.

thanks for the laughs. ^_^
the auroran sunset.

#41 - Posted by: the auroran sunset on October 28, 2004 07:28 AM

The one with Bush handing out terrorist skulls is the best for airing.

And you might try an outfit called Radio America. They're based here in DC, and I used to do a guest segment for them. Also knew their fundraiser.

#42 - Posted by: Gleeful Extremist on October 28, 2004 10:44 AM

Halliburton.

I showed the written version to my husband and best friend and both of them just about lost an internal organ.

My friend went to your site to get the audio version and then forced her CPA husband to listen. He, too, had internal damage and is in the process of spreading the Word of IMAO.

#43 - Posted by: Ginger on October 28, 2004 01:53 PM

1.Hair
2.Halliburton
3.Foreign Leaders

the funniest ones in order.

#44 - Posted by: J I Erde on October 28, 2004 04:50 PM

Thank you for the compliments, Ginger, and please let us know if you're ever in need of a kidney (Frank has an extra).
