Must... Destroy... Spam...
I'm trying to use this codeword solution to stop spam, but I can't figure out how to use it. I try to open the main tar.tar, and WinZip errors saying it can't read the header. I really need some help here before my site becomes nothing but spam.
Once the influx of spam is ended, then come the great clean up...
UPDATE: Turning .tar.tar to .tar.gz allowed me to open it. I'll try installing it tomorrow.
i say we take to the streets and protest spam... oh wait.. this isnt the DU.. uhh nm
If I want porn, I'll type "hot sluts" into Google, not go to IMAO looking for it. How stupid are the people who waste time writing these bots?
I keep googlin' hot porn and it shows IMAO. Alright - another reason to come here each day.
Wait. There's no porn here! WhyIoughtta!!''
I take it tossing all comments into moderation is not an option?
Why not use a password thingy? Oh wait.
Nope, I'm out of ideas.
You might want to check with Steve H - he has the codeword process set up on his comments and he uses MT.
.tar files are unix files not winzip. You might want to download a windows equivalent or if you must use unix, the command on the xterm is:
tar filename.tar
Frank; I don't think winzip opens .tar archives. Winrar does; I downloaded and then opened the archive with it.
I'll e-mail you the extracted files, with the subject "opened tar archive".
I'll send to the addy on your sidebar.
Hope that helps.
As for installing it, I have no idea, I've never even seen blog software.
Good luck.
You're a big enough target for SPAM, so that's gotta count for something... (Looking as hard as I can for that silver lining!)

As mentioned you need winrar to open that type of file. Keep in mind some rar files are not ment to be opened but prossesed (like cab files). Did it come with instructions? If all else fails fit slot A into tab B. If it makes you feel any better, it's Thursday at 7 o'clock, and I am sitting here in front of 3 computer trying to find the subroutine that keeps spawning trojins. (yes I am useing them to view IMAO, but Don't worry, I am sure they are not comeing off, and infecting your web page....... yet)
Frank, Would using registration through TypeKey eliminate it? Even I can use that and I am totally computer illiterate. Once you register, which takes maybe one minute, it remembers you and all you have to do is put name and email address just like here, nothing to it.
I really think you should consider it if you can add it to your blog without major changes. Some form of registration is just going to be a must these days.
I think most of us are accustomed to it and really do not mind. Maybe a quick survey or ask for comments from all your readers on it and see how they feel about registration of some sort. Otherwise, the spam is just going to get worse.
It nice you do not want to make us register but honestly I don't think it is such a biggie or that your readers would mind all that much. Better to have you writing more funny stuff than having to deal with spam all the time, right?
Monster: tar ain't rar, even if winrar can open tar files. Rar is an ENTIRELY different format than tar (no idea what rar means, but tar is Tape ARchive, for streaming to magtape. Showing its age, ain't it?).
I'm SURE I've used winzip to open .tar files (usually .tar.gz).
If the software is running on windows, it OUGHT to be zipped. If it's for unix, well, copy it over and "tar xvf file.tar".
Try 7-Zip, it can open .tars .gz .zip etc.
http://www.7-zip.org/
its free too (source code and license)
http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/ has a good freeware program that can handle a lot of different compression types, including .tar
my bad, I didn't preview, I did mean tar, and not rar. I don't use winzip that often because of the nag screen. I did wonder what tar stood for, and now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
I see that you have the file called main.tar.tar I have seen this problem before with WinDoze and one of the solutions that has worked is to rename it to main.tar.gz Sometimes the download will actually unzip the file without telling you that it has done so, in which case you would need to rename the file main.tar
Good luck
You know, captchas are not the best solution. A number of other blogs have mentioned that the best thing to do is modify your MT installation by renaming your mt-comments.cgi file. (And there's a couple other steps but I don't use MT so I don't remember what they are.)
I posted this a week ago but my post seems to have disappeared.
I'll have the eggs with spam bacon without the spam.
You need a new "Fun Facts" t-shirt for spammers.
Windows people make me laugh sometimes- but more times make me cry.
tar -zxpvf *.tar.gz

It's a perl script.. Enjoy.
And for windows. Use WinRAR.
Maybe you should ask SarahK? It seems like she has it figured out on her blog...
Frank, are you telling me you can't figure out something She can?
Shame on you!
You spammers can read Bulgakov and you don't?
I see that the Linux brain trust is in action, displaying its typical condescendence to anyone who dares use a different operating system.
Maine Tartar!
Mmmm, I love lobster.
I am so glad that ddd posted those porn sites. I heard that there was porn on the Internet, but I have been looking for it for 10 years and haven't found any yet.
Did we remember to Abu Ghraib him?
These are the funniest headlines ever!
There is porn on the internet? Gosh what is the world comeing to.
While I agree that this spam is a most unwelcome pain, perhaps there is one thing we can do to make the best of this... Let's take our little game of headlines and apply it to the porn links!
My submissions:
"aqualangist rapes drowning woman"
Suspects Aquaman, Senator Ted Kenedy Sought for Questioning
"young housewife in bondage action"
Housewife: 'I started out day trading stocks, but the bonds are where all the action is.'
Then again... Maybe I'm smoking crack here...
How about "Angry blog readers hunt down and kill spammers."
Hey, Frank, did you hear about the new nofollow mt plugin? It's supposed to help reduce the usefulness of comment spam by adding a tag that tells search engines not to follow the links in comments. That hurts their page rankings and if enough people use it, it should cause the spammers to give it up.
Spoons writes about it today at this link
maybe the best bet is to try the tar.tar with some fish sticks or fried seafood, I hear that is some good eatin'
