sounds about right. #2 - Posted by: Laura on March 9, 2005 12:49 PMNo, you look around and say, Hey, where'd all these Democrats come from? Depends on whose perspective you're looking at it from--from an observer looking at you descending into a black hole, your descent gets slower and slower, as time is "longer" for the observer than the observed. Lightwaves are stretched into longer and longer wavelengths (into the infrared area of the light spectrum) as they try and escape the black hole's gravity. Eventually the descender will be crushed by the immense gravity when he is pulled into the center of a black hole, called the "singularity" where even time stops. And yes, I really enjoyed my astronomy classes. #6 - Posted by: MobileSuitPilotX on March 9, 2005 02:20 PM"Aww, crap! I'm descending into a black hole! @#$% me!" I really have to question whether a person who was being torn apart by a black hole would be feeling all that amorous. I mean, I know some people are real horndogs and all, but it seems to me that being stretched into a long, bloody strand would be a real mood-killer. #7 - Posted by: AWG on March 9, 2005 02:32 PMHey, some of us particularly enjoy our gravitational-bondage videos! Maybe we would be the amorous ones... until we saw all the Democrats. #8 - Posted by: humanoverlord on March 9, 2005 06:05 PMMaybe they say it because time isn't the only thing getting longer in the black hole? #9 - Posted by: LF on March 9, 2005 08:18 PMSorry to nitpick, but you can't descend into a blackhole since once you get there the concept of "up" and "down" are totally sent to the land where Ted Rall makes sense, i.e. cease to exist. #10 - Posted by: kyber on March 10, 2005 12:12 AMkyber, True. But to an observer in a ship watching the person being pulled into a black hole which is located directly underneath the ship's current hovering location might call it a "descent". It all depends on your perspective. #11 - Posted by: MobileSuitPilotX on March 10, 2005 12:43 PMWould this be prior or susequent to the Schwartzchild radius, aka the Event Horizon? And guys, frankly the math here is a bit fuzzier than even Hawking presents since it is ALL theory. One camp has it that as you continue to accelerate the whole mass/time/velocity thing comes into play and guess what? You NEVER get there (the surface of the singularity) so you get to say @$@#7@! a LOT! Of course relative to YOU none of this takes place and the entire Universe disapears in a flash and you get to meet God, albeit 100 billion years later than everyone else did! Neat stuff that math! #12 - Posted by: Hursh on March 10, 2005 11:48 PMPost a comment
