Dick Durbin is a Dick!
Posted by Frank J. at 03:12 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (36)

Look at this quote from Senator Dick Durbin on the Senate floor last night:

On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. ..... On another occasion, the [air conditioner] had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the tile floor.

If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others--that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.

Yeah, I remember the horror stories of the lack of air conditioning in the Nazi concentration camps (who wants to bet my brother in Iraq is dealing with hotter weather right now in his un-air conditioned tank?). Pol Pot, though, loved to turn up on the AC on his dissenters, that monster! Oh, and then there was the notorious use of the Notorious B.I.G. in the Soviet gulags.

I'm sorry; not only is this nuts for a Senator - a U.S. Senator - to say, but it would even be exceptional on the Democratic Underground. Some Republican Senator needs to show resolve and smack Durbin around the Senate floor until he gets some sense to him. Or we can send him to a gulag in North Korea to listen to rap music in an overly air conditioned room.

(Heard this from Rush Limbaugh who heard it from a caller who heard it from Laura Ingraham; got text from The American Thinker. Why isn't this lunacy getting more press?)

Wow. The horror. That sounds like a typical day in some of the barracks I've lived in.

#1 - Posted by: Army NCO Guy on June 15, 2005 03:20 PM

I totally agree, and THANK YOU for helping publicize this!

After all the hoopla over Gitmo, I've only seen proof of one case of actual torture, though that instance was indeed inhuman and barbaric. (the US guards actually played Christina Aguilara's CD so a prisoner had to hear it, which is almost enough to make me feel sorry for a terrorist.).

Seriously, when will these morons quit yapping about Gitmo?

#2 - Posted by: Chris James on June 15, 2005 03:24 PM

I heard that on Rush's show and I almost drove off the road!
Moronic, idiotic, moral equivocator!

#3 - Posted by: Laura on June 15, 2005 03:27 PM

Is Durbin saying that musical contributions to American society by urban black men amount to torture? What a racist.

#4 - Posted by: Tupac on June 15, 2005 03:35 PM

Maybe Cheney will tell him "go f*k yourself" like he did to Leahy.

Can Joe 'foo apply for Torture Pay?

#5 - Posted by: Plea Deal on June 15, 2005 03:52 PM

My air conditioner broke. Could you get me Mr Durbin's phone number? I'm hoping after he makes the murderers of american troops comfy, he could help me out of this torture as well.

#6 - Posted by: Kevin on June 15, 2005 04:08 PM

Maybe when "we" start comparing ourselves to Hitler we need to step back. I remember hearing the nazi's "studied” the effects of temp. extremes on the human body and this could be torture or death. It should not be repeated by US.

#7 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 04:21 PM

Well, if its true its not as funny as there other antics

#8 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 04:23 PM

Dave,

"I remember hearing the nazi's "studied” the effects of temp. extremes on the human body and this could be torture or death. It should not be repeated by US."

Let me get this straight. Turning an air conditioner down to its lowest setting is torture and could result in a death??? Gimme a Break? What is the lowest setting on an air conditioner? 50 degrees? That is going to kill someone? Come on!!! Pull your head out. Besides these TERRORIST are there for a reason. And since when do prisoners have more rights than a citizen does? I mean I don't have any air conditioning to keep me comfy in the heat. Crap, most school children don't have air conditioning.

The idea that you would even put the Gitmo and Nazi concentration camps in the same sentence is crazy. Are we gassing prisoners by the train load? Do we line them up and shoot them down? Are we raping them when they get to the prison? Are we doing experimental surgery on them? The answer is NO! So blow it out your butt!!!

Frank J, Sorry I went on like that. But sometimes you just got to unload.

#9 - Posted by: yonelly on June 15, 2005 04:59 PM

I know for a fact ('cause I lived in Europe) that most Euros don't have air conditioning, and I can tell you it's torture.....that is, living in Europe is torture.

#10 - Posted by: Dr. Phat Tony on June 15, 2005 05:11 PM

Maybe we should just cut their heads off. We heard less complaining about those sorts of actions.

Then we can convert to Islam, since people like Dick don't complain about Islamic fundamentalists either.

Then everybody will love us.

#11 - Posted by: Frank H. on June 15, 2005 05:12 PM

Give the prisoner a tee shirt, light slacks, and a plastic tarp for a blanket, nothing else. Its like the frog in boiling water. It just needs to be cold enought for u to try the tarp for a blanket. By the time u realize you're cold cuz yer sweatin, its hrd to give up the blanket, but its just gettin worse and worse.
Bwuhahahaha Don't try this at home you'll just cheat

#12 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 05:21 PM

But I agree re: Gitmo=Concentration
Just dont like the sound of this one game with temp. hot or cold.

#13 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 05:24 PM

BTW when you sweat the tarp lets the cold thru but not air that could dry u.

#14 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 05:28 PM

It may not kill u but its not fun and u can't sleep. I know some law enforcement rogues have played with it in US on citizens.

#15 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 05:48 PM

No, Dave, Gitmo=Jail. If all the real reports are correct, the average Islamist terrorist lives about as comfortably as the average American convict. Maybe better. If you really think that making someone really hot or really cold is torture, then you've had a very easy life. Some of us get to be too hot or too cold for a living.

If we were really torturing detainees for information, you'd be hearing about people being hung by their wrists until their shoulders fell out of socket. Or electrocuting them with power cords until they're near death. Or raping, then killing, their wives and daughters in front of them. Or cutting off limbs. Or forming a line of detainees and randomly shooting a few. Concentration camp inmates generally don't get released to try to go be terrorists again. Concentration camp inmates end up in mass graves.

#16 - Posted by: Army NCO Guy on June 15, 2005 05:52 PM

I was the victim of this when younger dumber and drunk. It wasn't till years later that I understood how it was done. Spent the night like this in the drunk tank and was far worse in morning.
Yes Gitmo isn't a gulag but I would like to see us tread carefully with extreme heat or cold on humans. They may have just been discomforting me and playing with me, wouldn't want any complaints, but it was worse torture than the hangover I gave myself.
Jus saying lets not discount everything we here jus cuz they cry wolf too often.
If not true, fine, if it is I cannot condone it myself. Feel free to have your own opnion. I'm so sick of the HFL I can't believe I'm arguing their point.
I Hope its not true they're deliberately playing with body temp. related discomfort.

#17 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 06:09 PM

I however might be talked into it if it showed great intel results. I would have told them anything to get back my sweater they took

#18 - Posted by: Evil Dave on June 15, 2005 06:21 PM

I would wanna be sure it couldn't induce hypothermia if not carefully monitored.
Just a thought, might not be possible. Do we dare look at the nazi's results from their experiments,or do we have to do our own humane study, and could we find volunteers not illegal combatants.
Sorry if I'm too easy on them but do we want to even be percieved as like them.
Answer? only as a last resort when defending our freedom. Not that u can't make a good case that's what we're doing. I havn't gotten that desperate yet but our "loyal" opposition is pushing me there. Can we win this two front war. I think we're doing better on the irwaki front.irwaki not equal to iraqi's (gov and supporters). We appear to be mired on the liberal fronts OK maybe its more than two fronts. We're holding our own on the PR propaganda front I think. Maybe I hang at the wrong sites. LOL

#19 - Posted by: Dave on June 15, 2005 06:44 PM

The inmates @ Zephyrhills Correctional in West Central Florida don't have A/C in their communal concrete-block sleeping building - never heard of anyone dying from it, even in the summer when it gets to over 100deg w/an avg. 86% humidity and the air doesn't move unless there's a hurricane.
It's a small town...you'd hear.
Maybe Arab/Islamic criminals are just inherently more frail than our home-grown variety and have to be treated more gently?

Finally,a use for rap "music". I have to admit I didn't see that one coming.

Hmmm...should I Heil Hitler or make the room colder? Damn, where's good 'ole Chimpy McSatan when you need him?

#21 - Posted by: Matt on June 15, 2005 09:50 PM

So since the AC was out in the office today, wouldn't my employer be in violation of the Geneva Convention?

FOUL! FOUL! WA! WA!

The world would be a dull and boring place without liberals...

Sent to Senator Durbin: Your comments of yesterday demeaned those who fought the Nazis, demeaned our Military, gave aid and comfort to our enemy.
Does anyone in the Democratic Party have any sense of proportion?, Any sense of shame?
The vulgarity of your Party, your and others comments that are not just disagreement but harmful to our Country are why I see no hope for your Party and have been driven away.
Shame!!

#24 - Posted by: ENC on June 16, 2005 07:45 AM

Dave,
everything I've read said they had plenty of doctors coming in to check on them several times a day during these episodes. In fact, the left uses this as "proof" of torture because we wouldn't have doctors constantly checking on them if we weren't "torturing" them. So... I think they were probably safe from harm.

#25 - Posted by: Pluto's Dad on June 16, 2005 10:01 AM

Traitors.
Hanging is too good for them.

#26 - Posted by: jimmyb on June 16, 2005 10:44 AM

I tried to send the link to this to Durbin's office b/c I thought that would be a good thing to do (to let him know he came off as stupid). Unfortunately, I got a message saying that the "Contact the Senator" page had been taken down. hmm....

#27 - Posted by: Selina on June 16, 2005 11:03 AM

Hmmm...it appears that the new benchmark for being a leading light in the donk party is to be a moral retard.

Durbin's musings are the final proof of that.

#28 - Posted by: CPT. Charles on June 16, 2005 11:36 AM

This goes beyond hyperbole and rhetoric. Durbin, you are a pig. This is one of the grossest and sickest statements to come from the Liberals yet. It’s this sort of absurd and grossly disproportionate anti-America Leftist screed that emboldens our enemies, puts our lives and the lives of our soldiers in danger, and alienates the Left further from the mainstream.

#29 - Posted by: shamalama on June 16, 2005 12:43 PM

Senator, is smoking cra__K. Saying rap music is torture. That is racist as another poster pointed out. GITMO is not a Gulag nor a concentration camp. The detainees are being fed, and taken care of. A lot of American Children don't receive three squares and clean environment to live. Plus, literature to read.

His comment also degrades all US Military Members. Some of the Detainees released have been killed or rearrested in Afghanistan or on their way to Iraq.

Don't know why minorities flock to the Democratic Party. They are constantly demeaning minorities and taking them for granted.

#30 - Posted by: BANDY on June 16, 2005 03:09 PM

I used to work at a place called gateway foods in minneapolis. A wholesaler for Cub,rainbow, etc. For 8 hrs I wore a snowmobile suit, boots, and gloves. Stacking pallets with orders of frozen entree's, ice cream, orange juice etc. I was cold and sweating at the same time. Absolutly miserable.(paying taxes at the same time for this luxery). I lived in Florida for a few years and the UPS drivers their have no air conditioning in the trucks, well over 100 degrees. Also my brother is a UPS driver here in Minnesota, freezes his ass off in the winter, hot in the summer(also paying taxes to the gov't to be able to do this). Millions of lower and middle class Americans do this everyday, and there not trying to destroy America.
These liberals gotta go!!!!!

#31 - Posted by: Mike B. on June 16, 2005 03:41 PM

Has anybody pointed out that a large majority of our public schools do not have a/c? Our children are also not given a religious book of their choice when they are in school. Who's getting more from my tax dollar?

#32 - Posted by: Wolf's Dawn on June 16, 2005 06:56 PM

It's unfair the way y'all are picking on that poor Senator. All he was trying to say is that conditions at Gitmo are totally hitler.

Give the guy a break.

#33 - Posted by: basil on June 17, 2005 08:07 AM

I bet if anyone here has lost a loved one in 9-11 he/she may view this differently. I say get the information at any cost to deflect another tragedy. If a terrorist is forceably cold, hot, humiliated or made to listen to rap, so be it. The Geneva Convention does NOT apply to terrorists who do not abide by it by killing innocent civilians. By the way, I was in the Army and we did not have air conditioning, we had a canteen with water. Dump some on your head. Where is my compensation!!

#34 - Posted by: amie on June 17, 2005 10:52 AM

The thing that is most disturbing to me in this entire Dick Durbin fiasco, is that the people of Illinois actually elected this MORON to the senate.

What does that tell you? But I have an idea for the "Big Dick".

Let's close down the "Gitmo Gulag" as he suggests, and transfer the detainees to the state prisons of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

No A/C, no orange glazed chicken, no grilled fish (everything pork flavored), no Korans, no prayer time and best of all, no private "bunk time".

Their fellow inmates will show these terrorists what real terror is all about.

And by the way, there "ain't no" Geneva convention rules in Huntsville, Texas state prison.

After the transfer, maybe Durbin would like to go down for a six month visit to protect the "rights" of these murdering zealots of Islam.

Make no mistake, al Qaeda and other radical Islamic groups, are engaged in a religious war with the USA and don't intend to play by gentlemanly rules. Their goal is simple, kill all of us!

If any fool (read Durbin) thinks that our treatment of the terrorists in Gitmo helps their cause, they're dead wrong! They hated us before, they hate us now and they will hate us tomorrow, no matter what we do at Gitmo.

With his outrageous comments, Durbin has clearly demonstrated to the world his true colors. He's nothing more than the worst example of a political "crack hoe" who will do or say anything to divide our country, if he thinks it will help get him re-elected.

Finally, I wonder how he would compare the treatment at Gitmo to the pain and suffering of the victims of 9/11, or the civilians captured in Iraq and beheaded on television.

Where was his outrage then?

Interesting that you left out the first paragraph of the quote:

"On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee
chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair,
food or water. Most times they urinated or defecated on themselves,
and had been left there for 18-24 hours or more."

Innocent oversite I'm sure...
