Funny is in the Birth Defect of the Beholder
Posted by spacemonkey at 02:36 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (44)

Frank beat me to this but...

Mithras a blogger, who is, and I mean this with the strictest inter-blogger professional courtesy, an ignorant moonbat nutjob of I'm sure, the most delightful sort, also possibly an extremely large radioactive moth [ed note, nope that was Mothra], asks Where Are All The Funny Conservative Bloggers?

Then he (she? no offense, dunno, don't read him/her) lists a few:
* IMAO.US (good call),
* Scrappleface (I'll link him, even though he gets plenty 'o traffic already) and
* Lileks (ditto, I'll link them in the off chance they link back)

Outside of them, it's all self-righteousness and persecution complex, all the time. And outside of the three listed above, when a conservative blogger does employ humor, I find that usually it's in retelling a joke they read somewhere else.

First of all thanks for including us on your extremely short list of funny conservative blogs. Really thanks, glad to know we don't use words that are too big for some of y'all.

Mithras also wonders:

Is there just some birth defect that prevents right-wingers from being funny?

But instead of assuming we, conservative as a lot have some sort of birth defect that doesn't allow us to make, as we in the funny business call 'teh funny.' perhaps you should take the long view. When liberals are in thier natual habitat at a protest, painted pink and green head to toe, running rampant, howling at the moon, at the OUTRAGEous things the conservatives are saying, THAT's what we are laughing at. And we laugh our rear ends off at you. Figuratively.

Mithras also asserts

The key to successful humor, after all, is to be able to see things from other people's perspectives - a liberal trait that conservatives deride variously as "relativism" or "objectively pro-terrorist".

What about our perspectives? Can you see our worldview? Perhaps liberals should try to use that 'see things from other, whatevers" ability and try looking at humor, which arguably is not a thing, from another POV namely ours. When conservatives make fun of liberals, conservatives laugh and laugh and laugh, while the liberals, best case, don't get the joke, worst case, call the ACLU to set up legal proceedings for a civil rights abuse case.

I will look at humor from a liberal point of view.
When liberals make fun of conservatives, liberals laugh and laugh and laugh thinking "BUSH LIED!! PLASTIC TURKEY!!" blissfully ignorant of the fact they are in fact a bunch of unfunny, treasonous freaking sillysallys, while the conservatives are frankly too busy happily researching new and more efficient ways to destroy the environment for any such futile impotent flailings emanating from the left to make a blip on their radar.

See? It all becomes painfully clear when you simply broaden your mind and look through the eyes of your intellectual superiors. Us.

Where are all the funny conservative bloggers? Somewhere, laughing at you, just not with you.

---
Heh.
---
Disclaimer: I know I didn't list any conservative humor blogs, pointing them out to liberals would have been as futile as the list of lefty 'humor' blogs was to us. Also, I know, I use commas, too much. I'm getting help.,

Question: If Mothra found us funny, what are we doing wrong?

#1 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 9, 2005 03:44 PM

ummm I thought that DailyKos and DU were conservative humor blogs.

#2 - Posted by: tommy on August 9, 2005 03:55 PM

Frank, I dunno, maybe we should turn liberal?

Tommy, In a way they are, they are.

#3 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 9, 2005 04:05 PM

Give it to me straight Spacemonkey. Would I have been on the list if you did list them?

#4 - Posted by: Dr. Phat Tony on August 9, 2005 04:22 PM

If Mothra found us funny, what are we doing wrong?

Well, technically, I didn't say you were all that funny, just that you were at least trying to be.

But "Mothra" is funny.

#5 - Posted by: Mithras on August 9, 2005 04:23 PM

Oh. I see. Conservative bloggers are just to BUSY to be funny.

#6 - Posted by: kevin. on August 9, 2005 04:24 PM

Conservative bloggers are just to BUSY to be funny.

Yes. It's all the research on kerning.

#7 - Posted by: Mithras on August 9, 2005 04:34 PM

Oh. I see. Conservative bloggers are just to BUSY to be funny.

Sure kevin., that's it, You gleaned my point.

NO!!!! We simply don't think your poking fun at us is funny just like you don't think our making fun of you is funny. Is the POV thing really THAT big a chasm to cross? I thought you liberals were supposed to excel at that empathy thing.

#8 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 9, 2005 04:36 PM

Mithras,
Kerning, heh, I'll grant you that one.

#9 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 9, 2005 04:37 PM

I got some crap from the podcast line where I spelled out Texas and then told W that it was where his Daddy paid his taxes. Got accused of being a bleeding-heart Lefty, even.

Wow. Amazing. A Rightie that sees humor in the Right is a Lefty. Amazing.

Of course, I just go back to the Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem Community for Humor and Satire and wonder where all these so-called humorbloggers of the Left are. Apparently, they're either too lazy to submit URLs or think they'll be rejected.

Haven't rejected a funny one yet.

#10 - Posted by: Laurence Simon on August 9, 2005 04:57 PM

Admit it, you can't think of any funny conservative blogs, can you?

#11 - Posted by: phg on August 9, 2005 05:45 PM

How did Iowahawk miss The List?

#12 - Posted by: Dan Up, Baby! on August 9, 2005 06:15 PM

I'm glad we have liberals to tell us what we're supposed to find funny, I mean all that thinking for myself- it's hard work.

...and I thought mithras was the material Frodo's armor was made from.

#13 - Posted by: Bob in Feenicks on August 9, 2005 06:20 PM

can you think of any funny liberal ones? i laugh at the DU whackos does that make it funny i mean i think it is hillarious how they are still whining and whining and whining... i mean they really need to unscrunch their panties... but i doubt you think that is a funny one or do you?

#14 - Posted by: AJ on August 9, 2005 06:22 PM

A NeoCon, Karl Rove, and ChimpHitler walk into a bar.

"We don't get many Rethuglicans here," says the bartender.

"That's because we are all on the payroll at Halliburton to fabricate a case for war and kill over 100,000 civilians," said the Neocon.

"And paying Guckert/Gannon to out Valerie Plame to cover up John Robert's gay son," said Rove.

"Me so stupid me eat plastic turkey," said ChimpHitler. "Jesus Saves! Mission Accompished!"

Suddenly, Margaret Cho came in and told another extremely funny progressive joke at their expense.

#15 - Posted by: iowahawk on August 9, 2005 07:22 PM

What's funny about ScrappleFace?
I don't get it.

#16 - Posted by: Scott Ott on August 9, 2005 07:43 PM

Now that you mention it, the third from last paragraph would have been a great place for more commas if you were just lookin for a place to put them. I ran out of breath and passed out. I smoke. Big ole 'Arturo Fuente' (all copyrrights reserved) Hemingways. Wanna get rid of a liberal just blow 'em some of that. Liberals are cool when they turn blue.

#17 - Posted by: Ron Rockstar on August 9, 2005 08:09 PM

PeoplePolitical.com and TheRant.us are both hilarious righty sites.

Of course real humor should always, ALWAYS involve farting sounds.

#18 - Posted by: Yosef on August 9, 2005 08:19 PM

Plastic turkey?

#19 - Posted by: Texas84 on August 9, 2005 08:49 PM

Texas84: the 'Hawk has condensed the contents of the entire liberal blogosphere into one joke. Just try and look awed. (Or go to Tim Blair's site and search for "plastic turkey" if you really haven't heard that lie).

#20 - Posted by: Ian S. on August 9, 2005 08:58 PM

They probably don't get Liberal Larry.

#21 - Posted by: jonag on August 9, 2005 09:15 PM

I love you Iowahawk.

#22 - Posted by: Ian on August 9, 2005 09:18 PM

the conservatives are frankly too busy happily researching new and more efficient ways to destroy the environment Hmmm... indeed. We righties think the lefties are plenty funny. It's just that they're funny when they're serious, and not funny when they try to make a joke. In fact they're down right hilarious when they get angry.

#23 - Posted by: Fitch on August 10, 2005 12:04 AM

"blissfully ignorant of the fact they are in fact a bunch of unfunny, treasonous freaking sillysallys"

Treasonous, heh? Do you have the strength of your convictions? What follows from this conclusion?

This is one part of your post that's not humor, correct?

#24 - Posted by: Peeperkorn on August 10, 2005 02:53 AM

To clarify:

People who make fun of my worldview may be funny, on a case-by-case basis.

People who believe I should be dead (the penalty for treason) might be funny as well. But they are certainly evil or ignorant.

Or were you joking about that charge?

#25 - Posted by: Peeperkorn on August 10, 2005 03:02 AM

Should Peeperkorn die?

Hmm... hard to say without knowing his views on kerning.

#26 - Posted by: Frank J. on August 10, 2005 06:54 AM

Simply different style of humour, Mithras, old bean. When one’s proclivities run toward sophisticated topics such as corporate brigandage and rapine, one is less inclined to be interested in liberal humour, which tends to be puerile and mean spirited.

I find that fellow conservatives delight in a subtler, dryer humour; viz, lacing hippie’s undergarments with the spores of a particularly itchy crotch fungus, setting the hounds on protestors and Howard Dean.

#27 - Posted by: Dr. E. Scientist, phD on August 10, 2005 07:56 AM

And farting! Don't forget farting, Dr. E!

#28 - Posted by: Yosef on August 10, 2005 08:37 AM

Gorilla suits and ass-less pants are ALWAYS funny. A liberal told me that once. I think that's the one time he was right.

#29 - Posted by: Undercover Hippie on August 10, 2005 09:24 AM

Yes, Yosef, and farting, as long as it's done tastefully, like during the writing portion of "Final Jeopardy".

#30 - Posted by: Dr. E. Scientist, phD on August 10, 2005 10:25 AM

Or the "Beans" Scene in "Blazing Saddles".

That's gold!

#31 - Posted by: Yosef on August 10, 2005 09:40 PM

People who believe I should be dead (the penalty for treason) might be funny as well. But they are certainly evil or ignorant.

Or were you joking about that charge?

Peeperkorn: Of course, it was the stereotype.

I mean you wouldn't give aid and comfort to the enemy would you? Of course not.

#32 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 10, 2005 09:48 PM

Frank J., I suppose that was rather droll.

spacemonkey -- increasingly, I am DEFINED as the enemy within. And not, I should say, for given aid and comfort etc. but for dissent and simple speech within proscribed limits.

The legal niceties just don't matter much to a number of ytour less sophisticated fellow travelers, or their favorite pundits. The former seem incapable of precision, while the latter find it inconvenient.

Hanging Lenin and Stalin around our necks will persist, which is fine, even from those who've taken less time to learn than the likes of me. But here at home, the radical Right factions have been a violent and enduring blight. They make Eugene Debs or the IWW look like quaintly troublesome Quixotes with nobody to carry their banners for a long time now.

Left academia is toothless -- it exists, but so what? Where are the vigilantes, the bombers, the rogue militias, the separatists, the apocalyptic cults? It's comforting that these are not Reagan Republicans, but they owe nothing discernible to the influence of Left radicals either, in academia or elsewhere. They grow in the fertile soil of the mainstream, populist Right, and break away when you're not radical enough for them.

And they're violent, unlike me. It would be nice to see them scapegoated as well, if nothing better by way of public discourse is to be attempted.

I won't be troubling you any further.

#33 - Posted by: Peeperkorn on August 10, 2005 11:42 PM

As an afterthought, I took the time to insult Captain Ed, but posted in the previous thread by accident. I apologize for any confusion. Best wishes.

#34 - Posted by: Peeperkorn on August 10, 2005 11:59 PM

Peepercorn: What trouble? Having a few liberals around for a change has been interesting. You guys have been relatively polite guests.

Fairly civilized conversation all around. Of course, I haven't read your comment re: Capt. Ed yet.

#35 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 11, 2005 12:11 AM

spacemonkey --

I wasn't thinking when I typed the "trouble" bit. As you say, I was actually trying to be polite and civilized. Thanks for noticing.

Adios, muchacho.

#36 - Posted by: Peeperkorn on August 11, 2005 12:43 AM

Hasta la nachos

#37 - Posted by: spacemonkey on August 11, 2005 01:34 AM

Peeperkorn,
You might want to consider some of the actions by ELF and ALF, and do a little research into Black Panthers, Bader-Meinhoff Group, Red Brigades, The Weatherman, et al, before you absolve the left of violence.

Not to mention shots fired at RNC local HQs, slashed tires, swastikas burned into lawns that had Bush signs...and that was just in the last election.

#38 - Posted by: Nathan on August 11, 2005 03:35 AM

Pepperkorn -

And don't forget the lovely anarchist contingent, as well as the Communists, the Khmer Rouge, and Ted Kennedy.

#39 - Posted by: TheGoodLieutenant on August 11, 2005 10:55 AM

Violence by the left? You've got to start with the violence they do to innocent life.

#40 - Posted by: DL on August 11, 2005 01:03 PM

"We are laughing at them not with them."

Great snark! LOL

#41 - Posted by: RA on August 11, 2005 02:33 PM

The Black Panthers have a liberal blog?!? holy crap Batman!

#42 - Posted by: Kathleen on August 11, 2005 05:15 PM

Guy needs to check out Wuzzadem, Blame Bush, The Schultzenheimer, Knowlege is Power, and Iowahawk. Those are all right off of my blogroll.

BTW, I was just commenting on how leftists can't seem to comprehend that other people might sincerely disagree with their clever little ideas. "This idea will end gun violence/racism/war/etc! OK, maybe it won't exactly WORK, but we have to do SOMETHING to maintain our sense of moral specialness. All we have to do is treat the Constitution like the RC church treats the Bible... What, you don't want to do that? Why don't you want to end ______? (Roberts wasn't aboard for a really bad law that was drafted in response to abortion clinic shenanigans, thus, he supports clinic bombers).

#43 - Posted by: Dave Munger on August 11, 2005 11:00 PM
