Kevin Smith loses his "movie-merch whore leader" status
Posted by Scott McCollum at 01:02 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (14)

Kevin Smith, AKA "Silent Bob" from the increasingly dull "View Askew" movies, has worked hard to make himself into the archetypal Hollywood hypocrite. One look at Smith's blog and you'll see what I mean. The guy is a machine-like movie merchandising whore for the 21st Century that loves it when he makes money but parrots Howard Dean's assertions about the evil Republican rich fat cats who never worked a day in their lives. Smith is the guy that actively sells used clothing and furniture from the sets of his crappy movies on his website to enrich his own life but thinks YOU are a jerk for being a money-grubbing Republican?

However, Smith has nothing on anti-liberal Hollywood filmmaker Vincent Gallo. Gallo, a true independent filmmaker and a guy that has much more in common with Republicans than Hollywood leftists, is selling his own sperm for $1 million on his website.

Kevin Smith has got to be kicking himself right now, sitting in his mansion saying: "Why didn't I think of that?" and crying in his bag of money...

UPDATE: If you have not already discovered the very funny blog of frequent commenter "Dr. E. Scientist, phD" I suggest you do so. The evil genius schtick has been done a million times before, but this guy is doing it right!

The Hell with Smith, I wish I'd thought of it.

I mean, I usually get arrested just for giving out free samples.

Yeah, Smith made his political views pretty clear in "Dogma." Within 10 minutes, we learn that two of the main characters, Jay and Silent Bob, are pro-abortion. That, and the "last scion" works at an abortion clinic. Smith reminds me of the John Kerry brand of Catholic.

Uh, wow. I just read the description. Full of himself, isn't he?

re: Alucard

The whole point of Dogma was a self-redemption of the last scion. What better way for a lapsed Catholic to start than in an abortion clinic? And Jay/Silent Bob are shown in every movie to act like idiots, so I don't know that I would take too much from them being pro-abortion, either.

I'm not taking Smith's side by any means, but I think that sometimes it's possible to read too much into things...

I just hope it's not self service.

Uhh.. I think that's "last Zion" not "last scion".

Even more appauling (for those that didn't read the Gallo link): he wants an extra $500,000 to impregnate the woman naturally. He will, however, possibly waive that fee after seeing your picture.

Actually Justin, it's "scion", as in decendant or child.
Zion means Jewish homeland, or more generally, an ideal society, such as the last human city in the Matrix movies.
And like Prolix stated, Bethany clearly is a lapsed Catholic, which is why she works in the clinic in the beginning of the movie, but finds faith and redemption.
And the Jay and Silent Bob aren't pro abortion, they just hang out in front of clinics to meet loose women - it's actually a criticism of pro-choice if it's anything.

"Lapsed Catholic" or not, there were numerous subtle anti-religious and anti-Christian jabs thrown throughout "Dogma." The Chris Rock character says we shouldn't have beliefs, only "good ideas." And this is coming from an apostle. The Janeane Garofolo character insults the pro-lifers (who are themselves portrayed as only a liberal would see them). And need I go into the implications of casting Alanis Morissette as g-d? Every single person in that film is an outspoken liberal, especially as regards social issues. And whether or not Jay and Silent Bob, the characters, act like idiots, their views reflect Kevin Smith's pretty accurately.

I am siding with Alucard on this issue.

#11 - Posted by: Scott on November 7, 2005 06:50 PM

Dogma may have been superliberal, but ya gotta hand it to Smith for allowing Ben Affleck's character to get blown up like a watermelon with an M-80 in the core. Kewwwwl!

#12 - Posted by: me on November 7, 2005 07:53 PM

Eh, I guess I just tried to watch the movie and find some humor in it. If I worried about every heavy-handed attempt by a liberal director to pass off some political view, I would never be able to watch a movie.

I WILL say that Kevin Smith's movies have gotten progressively worse. I can't even bring myself to watch Jersey Girl, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back only has a few really funny moments.

Oh well...

#13 - Posted by: prolix on November 8, 2005 09:29 AM

Yeah, Jersey Girl was horrific wasn't it? I, too, try to ignore the liberal bias of most films. I like watching Full Metal Jacket (the first 20-30 minutes anyway) even though it's from a liberal perspective. I love Batman Returns even though there's silly corporate bashing in there. But with a film like Dogma, the bias is far too blatant.
