Flogging
Posted by Frank J. at 03:31 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (16)

Michelle Malkin (SarahK: Stop talking about Michelle Malkin!) has launched a new venture to popularize video blogging on the internet. Soon, everyone can be his own Dan Rather. Personally, I've considered doing some of my own video, but it's not like I already don't have too much to do trying to fulfill your insatiable appetites for entertainment.

Anyway, for video blogging to take off, it obviously needs an asinine name. The written word on the internet is called a blog and audio is called a podcast - both completely meaningless words made to confuse newcomers. I say video should be called a "flog" - a combination of "film" and "blog." You like it? Doesn't matter; I've already declared it so.

Now get to flogging!

UPDATE: People keep trying to tell me that that video blogging already has names that are a combination of either video and blogging or video and podcasting. That's stupid. Video blogging should get it's own horrid name that makes it seem unapproachable to people who hadn't previously heard of it. That name is "flogging."

I'm a little concerned about the use of the word 'flogging' as it may become conflated with an activity reserved, primarily, for dolphins.

Frank..
Don't get me wrong. I love you're blog, but have you ever heard the saying "you have a face for radio"?

Well... I think I've said enough. Keep the funny coming!

Flogging has some unfortunate connotations historically, but it could be amusing- if you define who is the flogee and who is the flogger...

Little known fact: Mike TV was the first video blogger. He was fantastic on Wonkavision.

Ahem...excessive flogging will make you go blind!

"work bolg"??? Sounds pretty meaningless to me.

Though, I have heard of web log..

#8 - Posted by: Undecided on April 24, 2006 06:12 PM

I think 'vBlog or 'blogcast'.

Come now, it already has a name. It still falls under the realm of podcasting, since iPods are such capable devices and can handle image/video/audio. Apple has spoken.

And even had they not, all the current "video blogs" are called "podcasts", so that's effectively what they're called.

Do not defy the Apple.

I like Granny Smith Apples. I would never defy Granny Smith as I was taught to respect my elders.

Now, the proper name for a combination between a blog and podcast is obviuosly a POG.

Well, obviously, Glenn Reynolds called it vlogging long before you decided to name it flogging, Frank. And his puppy-blending, instalanching powers extend far beyond your own moon-nuking skills, so no matter how hard you try... Glenn Reynolds will rule over all! It's no use fighting it. Besides, film generally connotates feature-length; rarely is vlogging longer than a few minutes in my experience. And "blogcast" sounds too much like podcast. While "vlogging" could be confused with some sort of foreign pronunciation of "flogging," I guess it'll have to do. Because Glenn has already declared it so. Again, do not defy the almighty Glenn. It is of no use.

its called either a vodcast or a video podcast because it is closer to being a podcast thanks to the audio than it is to being a blog. video podcast is generally the accepted term. sorry frank, flooging behind the times. that train has come and gone.

Blog vs podcast? I'd go with "bloodcast"

This reminds me I'm hungry.

#14 - Posted by: norseman on April 25, 2006 02:25 AM

The Blender calls it vlogging.

#15 - Posted by: Russ on April 25, 2006 08:20 AM

So, does theis mean we are going to have to wait while you produce and edit video and audio?
