Unfair Political Humor
Posted by Frank J. at 03:34 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (12)

Eugene Volokh is having a discussion about what constitutes "fair" political humor referencing Slate's "Bushism of the Day." Probably not a discussion that will get anywhere, but that Slate feature does seem pretty asinine.

Gee, MFL, give this a read as you swing to and from in John Kerry's banana hammock. Don't pick the fruit though!

FrankJ:

On the Volokh site you wrote:

"As a certified humor expert, I can say the Slate Bushisms are just inane and not funny. They're struggling to make Bush sound inarticulate by leaving out context, but that's just asinine. Actually being inarticulate can be funny (which Bush does on occasion; just not something notable every day), and quotes so blatantly out of context that the audience knows its out of context (a staple of radio shows) can be funny, but this is just stupid.

If they want, I'll write them some funny stuff about Bush, but it will cost them."

You know FrankJ, the reason the whole discussion about what constitutes "fair" political humor might not go anywhere is because people like you write comments (see above) that don't even address the key issue, and instead blather on about Slate and make some lame-jokes about how funny they are.

Peace,

Monkey Faced Liberal

P.S. All your jokes about getting paid, taking Jonah Goldberg's job, the relentless hawking of T-shirts on your site, etc., make obvious that, despite your jokes about it, you really do dream of developing some sort of career as a political humorist.

For your own good I ask you to put away this silly dream. It is embarrassing. Maybe not as embarrassing as this fellow self-deluded dreamer, but embarrassing none the less.

Holy crap I just got back from Volokh and that was the most achingly serious, unfunny discussion of humor I've ever read. I need to wash my comedy glands. I feel dirty.

Fair comedy?

Is it fair to say "Aruban Lake Draining Halted Due To Corpse Lodged In Pump"?

Or "In Terms Of Being Alive-- Lloyd Bentsen 'No Dan Quayle"?

Fake quotes are what real comedy is all about! Beyond that, all that's left is "irony" or "poo jokes".

Here's Volokh's version of In My World: "Transcript of Deposition Of Mr. Julius Roland In The Case Of Speckman v. North Ohio Consolidated Transport"

NEVER LET LAWYERS TALK ABOUT TEH FUNNY.

They should be on the receiving end of a sucker punch before even Monkey-Faced Liberal (sorry MFL). And that's saying something.

C'mon FrankJ (or spacemonkey, or RWD, or Larry or cadet happy, or Aquaman), no one believes that some idiot liberal would come in here to make fun of people he thinks are complete idiots. You can drop the act now.

NMUSpidey:

I never believed that someone could delude themselves into thinking they are funny as much as FrankJ has. But I have found this is true.

So, like me, I guess you better start expanding your mind dude!

The Monkey Faced Liberal will continue to work to bring enlightenment to FrankJ.

I believe that he can break free from his demons, and accept the fact that he is about as funny as a heart attack.

Peace,

Monkey Faced Liberal

NMUSpidey,

When MFL says he wants you to "expand your mind" like he did, that's just hippie code for "you should try these funny mushrooms I been doin', man".

If anyone can make a heart attack seem funny, it's Frank J.

This one time, my great uncle had quadruple-bipass heart surgery. He was up and around in no time at all, the wily old devil. A few months later he was at a Dairy Queen with some of my family members, and he got bored waiting in line, so he faked a heart attack. The 70-something year old man hit the floor like a ton of bricks, mimed some siezures, then just about when the first person was about to call 911, he popped back up and said, "Oh, I'm fine." It was quite humorous.

So, heart attacks can, in fact, be funny.

Show of hands, who didn't know that monkey faced liberal was going to be on this thread showing itself to be a humorless nitwit?

You can put your hand down now monkey faced liberal. You're the only one.

The only unfair political humor is when one side comes to the table lacking any discernible weapons in their arsenal.
Now who could I be refering to........hmmmmmm?
It's always wrong to pick on those with less, ummm, gosh no matter where I go with this it's just not going to be fair.

Well you do hate the libs going into a battle of wits half-armed. Of course, with humorists like Al Gore on their side they should have a huge advantage. Q. Why should you always drive with a liberal in your car? A. You can legally park in the handicapped spaces. That one kills me.

#11 - Posted by: captamerica on May 25, 2006 03:46 PM

Humor is often relative. What one person finds funny, may not seem funny to another person.

We also have areas where we feel humor doesn't belong (perhaps our religion, certain members of family, death, etc.).

For libs, this happens anytime someone laughs at governement. It is their god, and thus sacred and beyond scorn. However humor is powerful politically, and this fact isn't lost on the enemy. Unfortunately, most of their attempts at humor become thinly veiled propaganda, thus disappointing the intelligent portion of their audience to the cheers of their predicated base.

So Frank, I want to salute you for being openly conservative, but not letting your beliefs get in the way of the humor. Noone In My World is any dumber than Dubya', and I wouldn't have it any other way.
