Can We Have a Wikipedia Entry? Sadly, No.
Posted by Frank J. at 04:06 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (14)

Sadly, No!, the liberal supposed humor site that Cadet Happy is dueling with, has had a Wikipedia entry for over a year, but it went up for deletion in the past couple days with all votes so far against it.

I really don't understand Wikipedia logic. The Sadly, No! article is certainly nicer looking and more informative than IMAO's strange little blurb (which I ain't touching since every other time IMAO had a Wikipedia entry, is was put up for deletion within a day), though it lacks any sources - which I guess could be fixed. If Wikipedia isn't going to explain the history of blog site for us, then who is? Haven't you ever run into a blog with a decent following and, after scanning the front page, exclaimed, "What the hell is this?" Why can't Wikipedia answer that question?

I should have a contest to find the most insignificant post on Wikipedia (with more points the longer it is). My favorite so far is the eight pages dedicated to Bumblebee from the Transformers.

Is "Wiki" some Canadian term for "weiner"???? Sorry, but not being mentioned in a weinerpedia shouldn't bring a grown liberal to tears...or should it?

Check out the article on World of WarCraft

Some of us found that information rather useful.

One word: Ego.

Anything geeky is obviously good enough to be included. But when it comes to something of substance, suddenly things become sketchy.

What, obviously, impacts things for the worse is the fact that it is less principle-based and more based on what the current active participants want and are articulating. Retaining an entry should be judged by whether it contributes any information, not whether enough votes can be mustered to support its existence.

The Sadly, No! article is poorly written. It seems to say, "We're a tiny blog that likes fighting more notable blogs and we almost won some award you never heard of" (which I suppose is at least honest). It does not provide reliable sourcing (that is, proof that the article is accurate) or evidence of notability (that is, proof that the blog is significant enough to merit mainstream coverage). Contrast that with the disambiguation page for Imao, which simply states that it's one of the top blogs according to the source given. Admittedly, the disambiguation blurb is too long and a bit of a cop-out, and should either link to a page or be more brief. But, considering the contributors don't seem to find having a Wikipedia entry important enough to fight again - this time with sourcing and evidence of notability - it's probably best it stays a mere mention rather than a page.

Oh, and, by the way, Bumblebee has gotten mainstream coverage (namely popular television shows and comic books). That may not be your yardstick of what's notable, but Wikipedia had to pick something (since it's not a list of every web page and every toy), so that's what it picked.

Don't overlook the pages on all the French attempts at anime in the 1980's. Spartikus and the Sun beneigth the Sea? Did anyone even watch that?

For what it's worth, I think that the extent of wikipedia's entry on itself should take the prize.

Frank,
Maybe you can put "Sadly, No" in the Anti-wikipedia to comfort his ego.
