How About We Keep the "Ick" and Drop the "Democrat"
Posted by Frank J. at 12:51 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (24)

Did I miss something? Did we lose the last election but successfully turned the word "Democrat" into a slur? I see more and more liberals whining about people like Rush Limbaugh using "Democrat" as an adjective for a Democrat instead of "Democratic" (one example) because - I'm guessing - "Democrat" is now a huge slur against someone. If, on a political talk show, one of the guests is described as a Democrat, he'll storm off the stage because of the huge offense.

Question: Are the ones complaining about Democrats being called Democrats the same ones who call Republicans "Repugs" or "Rethugs"?

Also, does whining about Democrats being called Democrats mean that liberals have completely run out of things to whine about?

Really, if I want to insult Democrats, I have much worse things to call them than "Democrats."

Well, somewhat worse things.

Frank, Frank, Frank. How can a man with a new Wii be so naive? There are few worse slurs than "Democrat". If someone called me a Democrat, I'd kick him hard in the nuts.

I have also noticed this.

I can't figure out what the problem is...

I'm a Republican.

I'm a Democratric.

Surely there are some libtard Democrats who can explain what is wrong with this...

Ooops...

I meant to say surely there are some libtard Democrat English majors who can explain what is wrong with this.

As always with lefty blogs, I love the comments. Especially this one
I don’t want Republicans to stop being ignorant or rude. The fact that they are ignorant and rude makes them easier to defeat.

They've won one election in the last decade+ and now the GOP is easy to defeat?
I mean, I'll admit that it should be easy to defeat them, but the Dems track record doesn't show that. To paraphrase (maybe quote, I forget) the Puppy Blender, "It's like the Special Olympics of politics."

I also really liked this comment
I thought they were the Evil Party and the Stupid Party

Yes.

This is akin to Jews who insist on being called Jewish, rather than Jews ( or Jooooos, or money-grubbin' land-stealin' Hebes).

#5 - Posted by: bunkerboy on December 20, 2006 01:40 PM

I tried to be a Democrat but I was too smart and not evil enough. Oh well, I'll get over it. Yep, I'm over it.

#6 - Posted by: DrEvil on December 20, 2006 01:48 PM

I have a friend (to borrow a line from Dick Gephart) who's worse insult is to call someone a democrat. Democrats are whining, stupid, surrender monkies who are constipated and miserable.

#7 - Posted by: captamerica on December 20, 2006 02:44 PM

It's entirely a focus group thing.

The Dems found out that "Democratic" gets a more positive response than "Democrat" so the party decided to promote using just that term (no, I am not making this up).

So, conversely of course, the people continuing to use the word Democrat must be doing that for the same reaons--that it sounds worse.

It's for the same reason a lot of leftwingers insisted for a long on calling themselves progressives instead of liberals.

If you're going to slur the Democratic Party, though - I've always prefered this:

(it seems appropriate in context)

I just read two pages of your book. Dude, how many copies have you sold, seriously?

#9 - Posted by: thomas on December 20, 2006 03:22 PM

Did you just call me the D word? That is soooo offensive. How dare you use such an insult. Not even Michael Richards would use that word, and we all know he will say anything.

Personally, I think it's all Dubya's fault.

Us Democratics would never be so insensitve to our Republican oppressors across the aisle.

DemoCRAP is appropriate. There are few worse insults in the English language.

I saw a caption with Pelosi and Jack "swiftboat" Murtha: "Dem and dumber"

#12 - Posted by: jeff on December 20, 2006 04:41 PM

Whatever was 'democratic' about democrats anyway? Totalitarians, to the last of 'em.

#13 - Posted by: Francesco Poli on December 20, 2006 05:46 PM

When "herself" is POTUS in '08 all of you starting with Frank are going to be spending time in a Gulag being "re-educated" by the Village anyway so it doesn't matter what you call them!

#14 - Posted by: ussjimmycarter on December 20, 2006 07:12 PM

All this time I was calling them "traitors." I didn't realize I could insult them worse by calling them Democrats.

#15 - Posted by: FIAR on December 20, 2006 08:51 PM

I was going to stay out of this fray. But fer cyrin' out loud:
It's the Democrat Party! How can that be a slur? I remember when Democrats carried that label with pride...because that was a time when all Democrats WEREN'T INSANE!

Matter of fact, some Democrats to this day aren't America hating socialists. Darn shame they don't get the press attention.

And don't get me started about Jimmy Carter!

#16 - Posted by: Brian the sailor on December 20, 2006 09:13 PM

It's entirely a focus group thing.

The Dems found out that "Democratic" gets a more positive response than "Salad-Tossing Ass Clown, (i.e., Democrat)" so the party decided to promote using just that term (no, I am not making this up).

The working term these days is Progressive. Being called a Democrat associates them with dirty politics and a party with a long history. You all know having a history is a very bad thing. They would have to deal with 200 years of the Democratic party in American history.

Icky! Icky! LBJ. Icky! Icky! Vietnam Icky! Bay of Pigs Icky! Cuban missile crisis. Icky! Truman Icky! Korean War Icky! Anti Communism Icky! WWII Icky! Southern Democrats Icky! WWI Icky 19th century American society Icky…Icky… Icky!!!!

A lot of these folks are way too the left of the Democratic party, at least the Democratic party I remember. In the past they usually didn’t vote. Too damn prissy for dirty politics. This time around though, they gotta’ get rid of those Rethugs, so they will hold their noses vote for Icky Democrats.

Being a progressive is about escaping the bondage of history. All the good things that happened are because of people like them, that’s the inheritance of the progressives! All the nasty things that happened are yours. That’s right, you now own the ass end of history, all the bad things are yours completely. It’s not material and knowledge based progress that they are really thinking of either. It’s a more existential progressiveness. Out with the nasty old world and in with the new good vibe. They’re the sun people. You’re the shit people. Get it?

They can’t even stand their own party history anymore. I’m not sure exactly what to call it, ‘Pacifist Escapism’ or ‘Paint Yourself into a Cornerism’!!

#18 - Posted by: Neo-andertal on December 21, 2006 12:26 AM

That’s also why I think the Dems will go for Barak Obama this time instead of Hillory, or any other experienced Democrat. They want a virgin politician. No history. Obama the closest thing they have. Besides, if they lose with Obama it only validates their belief about the fundamental bigotry of American society.

#19 - Posted by: Neo-andertal on December 21, 2006 12:33 AM

Let's face it - whatever word is used to describe Democrats will eventually become fully associated with their evil and become a slur. If we called them "sunshine & puppies", someday they'd tell us not to use the "s & p word".

#20 - Posted by: Harvey on December 21, 2006 09:54 AM

Thanks, Harvey

"Puppies" is perfect. They're so warm an fuzzy. Until they open their mouth and start yipping, that is.

#21 - Posted by: Neo-andertal on December 21, 2006 12:06 PM

Why does everyone keep misspelling this word. It's ...
D like in dirty laundry, tricks, and dirty feet.
E like evil
M like morally bankrupt
O like out of touch
N like nuts, nonsense, and neutered
C like in Cowardly, Craven, and Crazy
R like rabid, raunchy, rude and ridiculous
A like appalling, abhorrent and abysmal
T as in traitorous, two-faced, turncoats
I as in idiots
and finally
C as in ceaselessly chicken hearted
add an
S and you add spineless, shiftless, shady, stupid and superficial.

#22 - Posted by: seanmahair on December 21, 2006 12:25 PM

Neo-andertal,
That was a good rant! You sort of make me jealous.

Since I'm so often misunderstood, I mean that as a compliment.

#23 - Posted by: Brian the sailor on December 21, 2006 06:32 PM

To be honest, "Democrat" sounds better to me.

Most of the time when I hear or read "Democratic" as part of a title, I immediately imagine a nice, big red star.

You know those authoritarian fascist socialists. So keen on People's Democratic Republics and all that.
