To Surge or Not to Surge?
Posted by Frank J. at 06:46 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (9)

Dean Barnett has the most informative post I've bothered to read about the surge and why that number (21,500) of new troops was settled on. It's done in his entertaining and informative FAQ format that seems to be specifically made for my ADD.

Also, Mary Katharine (Superstar!) Ham has a video fisking of the Democratic Response to President Bush's speech about the surge using previous statements from Democrats about the war. Also, look for something familiar on MKH's desk...

BTW, search inside the book for Chronicles of Dubya should soon be available on Amazon, as you can now see searches on that site for "Rumsfeld Strangler" and "Operation Wacky Iraqi Attacky" finally give results.

I guess I should have read this whole post before I sent you the e-mail with the heads-up about the MKH video. 20 minutes after you posted that you'd already seen it. Why am I always saying, "I'm an idiot?" Hmmm, maybe there's a good reason, but I just can't think of it now.

Interesting...

3) Why did they do that? Why were so few forces in Baghdad?

To know the truth, we'll probably have to wait for the memoirs to be written by the war's principals. And even then, most of those will probably be self-serving and dishonest. The most reasonable explanation is that the Bush administration was so fearful of casualties that it hesitated to put a significant amount of troops into harm's way.

Bush was fearful. He has no balls. That's a very reasonable explanation. Because he had no balls he allowed Sadr to become powerful and screwed up Iraq. The Bush administration is not capable of managing a War. The idea that Bush is capable of running a successful war is just an IMAO reader fantasy. Bush having giant balls is also an IMAO reader fantasy.

I hate to say it but Dean Barnett’s numbers are about six months out of date, and way off. They would be accurate for last spring. Since early this fall, troop numbers have greatly increased in the Baghdad area. Also, the attempt to secure Baghdad is already underway and has been so for a few weeks.

As for why the troop levels were so low. If you remember it was the Bush administration policy to turn the security of Baghdad over to the Iraqi’s and start our initial draw down after the establishment of the new Iraqi government. That draw down was way too premature and was exacerbated by the fact that the Bush administration was very slow to recognize things were going badly wrong and there weren’t anywhere near enough troops to secure Baghdad. What troops they had did have quelled much of the fighting to the south of the city and slow the fighting in the west, but they couldn’t cover the entire city. I’ll give this administration low marks once again, for wishful thinking and not seeing what is going on.

Speaking of coming up short. Look’s like Sarcasm Man can’t get it up for any real sarcasm. I think we should shorten his name to ‘Sac’ man until his sarcasm matures past puberty.
