California Legislature Spanking Ban
Posted by Harvey at 12:19 PM | View blog reactions | Comments (11)

Democratic California Assemblywoman Sally Lieber has vowed to introduce legislation this week banning the spanking of elected officials.

"Currently we face the ridiculous situation of having our law condone justifiable beating of legislators," said Lieber. "Sure, I love a good spanking as much as the next consenting adult, but only if it involves a leather riding crop and a safety word. But using phyical violence to punish legislators for passing stupid laws? That's just WRONG!".

Governor Schwarzenegger seemed to agree, citing the corrective effects of both scheduled and recall elections. "We can discipline our legislators without hitting," he said.

Under current law, any legislator that proposes, votes for, or passes any legislation in violation of either the Constitution or common sense can have "the stupid beat out of his ass" with an 18 by 6 inch wooden paddle.

Lieber disagrees with the policy.

"Most people know you should not hit legislators, and legislators do not know right from wrong," she said. "Legislators you have to distract, remove, supervise, protect... preferrably with a shiny stack of unmarked bills."

Others, however, think Lieber is full of crap.

"The day that the [government] votes in its own legislators, then they have a right to raise them," wrote one constituent named Esther. "Till then, they are mine to do with as I please. I will raise them the way I see fit. If I think that those little butts need a swat... I will be the one to give it to them."

Meanwhile, Republican Assemblywoman Audra Strickland has promised to counter Lieber's bill with one of her own, which calls for a larger variety of corrective measures for wayward legislators. New options would include attending "wise-up classes" at either the Lyndie England Smoke & Point Discipline Academy or the President Clinton Internship Program, depending on gender and sexual preference.

THANK YOU for pointing out the blatantly obvious but unspoken "This will put a lot of clubs in Pelosi's district out of business" angle. IMAO is brilliant about exposing this stuff for the stupidity it is, in full glorious detail. If they do that "fairness doctrine" crap, apply for a slot on Comedy Central after on The Daily Show. You could certainly handle it.

Quick footnote...

"The inablity to distinguish between right and wrong" is...

A) The legal definition of insanity
B) The academic definition of postmodernism
C) The observable evidence of tenure
D) All of the above

But seriously;

Any good parent knows that there is a big difference between correcting your children & plain abuse. There is no excuse for constantly threatening or bargaining with your children to get them to do what they're supposed to do, or to stop doing something they aren't...I think that gives them an unrealistic idea that there won't be serious consequences for anything they do through their adolescence.

Sometimes, showing your kids that there can be physical consequences to bad behavior is a life lesson; the world at large will be more physically abusive, and less understanding & forgiving than a well-meaning parent.

I want these "lawmakers" "do gooders" pacifist pabulum pushers to stay the ...... out of my life. I am the parent and if it think my child needs to be spanked it is none of their business.
I raised 6 children, 5 of whom are reasonable adults (one's a flake, but you can't have everything). I spanked them all, WHEN they deserved it which wasn't often.
Spanking is not something that should be over used and one should never hit a child with anything other than the flat of their hand, and should never intend to hurt the child. That said, a spanking is something we used when the occasion warranted it. For example:
running into the street
running with scissors
hitting another child
playing with light sockets
cutting their own hair
-and there are others. The point is I saved spankings for something I NEVER wanted my children to do again. Something that was potentially dangerous, something that could harm either the child, another child or cause damage to property.

One of the biggest problems we have today it that because of Benjamin Spock (the doctor not the Vulcan) there's a whole generation of people who don't understand the correlation between action and consequences. I understood that really well as a child(was spanked) and so did my kids(got spanked).

Oh and I love McClintock ( and so do my kids). I guess the Childcare Nazi's will be breaking down my door. If they do, I'm gonna spank'em.

See, this here's the problem, spanking done correctly and with moderation would do wonders for society. I know that people would estimate their decisions with a lot more care if they realized there was a spanking involved. Isn't that what God made be-hins for anyhow????

From the US Military Code of Conduct:

Sec.IV, part iii(c) - Corporal punishment shall only be administered by Sergeant Slaughter, and should not involve Major Paine.

Hey, remember the jerkoff American kid who got caned in Singapore for writing graffiti? And then he came back to America and lit himself on fire trying to huff lighter fluid? Wasn't that great?

Now granted, no amount of beatings are gonna stop some people from being morons, but the point is they've really got that graffiti thing licked in Singapore.

I'm really happy that my assemblywoman (I'm in her district) is addressing the truly important problems. This is clearly more important than schools that cost more every year (even adjusted for inflation) and accomplish less, the continued flight of business from California, a rapidly rising violent crime rate, or anything like that. Go, Sally!!!
