Will FOX News Kill Conservative Humor?
Posted by Frank J. at 09:41 AM | View blog reactions | Comments (20)

FOX News will be showing this Sunday at 10pm the Half Hour News Hour made by 24 creator Joel Surnow that's supposed to be the conservative answer to Daily Show. So, there is going to be a show out front and center saying, "This is conservative humor!" and, from brief glimpses so far, it looks like it's going to suck (check out the awful promo here and here is Ace on what looks wrong with the show and a new clip with Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter here).

You've seen the liberal trolls who assert that conservatives don't know humor. If this is bad as many think it will be, this will be the proof that conservatives are lame and no network will take a chance on a conservative comedy show ever again.

But I don't care. It's not like I'm trying to break into the TV industry. I'm actually trying to write science fiction. Books are where the future is; after the internet, TV, and radio fads finally die out, everyone will be going back to books.

Anyway, maybe it won't suck... but it doesn't really have to be good either. Considering all the complaints about the left-wing tilt of other late night shows, I think mediocre is all the Half Hour News Hour needs to aim for. And, even if it is a train derailing as it hits the Hindenburg, I don't fear long lasting effects for conservative humorists such as myself. The biggest risk is to tarnish FOX News when the "Fair and Balanced" network has a show dedicated to making fun of liberals. That's kinda ruins their plausible deniability of their bias that at least every other news channel maintains.

Anyway, I'll give you an objective comedic analysis of the show after it premieres on Sunday... something you won't get anywhere else because, frankly, no one else is smart enough or understands the science of humor like I do. One of these days I need to get to writing that thesis paper on humor...

IMAO FUN ACTIVITY: BTW, I found two parts of the clip with Limbaugh and Ann Coulter funny. If you can correctly identify which two things made me chuckle, you'll win IMAO bonus points redeemable for IMAO prizes!

I can see where this is going. Fox News will come along and offer Frank a pittance to “contribute” to this new venture. They will then woo him with several of the Fox News Bunnies and he will be a full-time Roger Ailes butt boy and we will be left here in the blogsphere to fend for ourselves being the poor rubes that we are!

I share your sentiments. There's another new FNC show called Red Eye that's funny.

Again, just awful. Worse than a plane full of kittens crashing into a train loaded with puppies. I just don't see how, after filming that segment anyone associated with it's production could watch it and say, "wow we really hit one outta tha park!"

The suckitude of the clips that have aired already make the finished product damaged on arrival; no amount of improvement could save this show. The best course of action would be to bury this show in the desert next to the millions of E.T. Atari video game cartidges.

They need to lose the laugh track, bring in a real audience for goodness sake. But really, the bigger the viewing audience, the more money they will get to up the production value.
As for your chuckle parts, I am guessing one is the last thing that Ann Coulter says "And if you don't we'll invade your countries, kill your leaders and convert you all to Christianity", and the other I will guess when Rush said "I promise you the American people 4 years, or more, of Commander in Chief excelence".
I know those got me grinning.

I liked it. The smoking and invade countries part were good ones. I thought it was good.

No one can be funnier than Colbert who once ripped our stupid president to pieces right in front of his face. You can't have a good right-wing comedy show when your own leader is a total joke himself. How stupid is Bush and his administration? So stupid that they have screwed up Iraq so bad that Bush now wants to import all the Islamist refugees. Bush has turned America a giant sieve where people pour in all over the place. He won't control our borders from illegal immigration (this has soared under Bush) and now he will let all the Muslims pour into the USA so they can set up Sharia law like they want to in France, the UK and Iraq. Pathetic. The Bush administration totally sucks and so do the dwindling number of people left on Earth who support them.

Back on topic: IMAO is funnier in my arrogant opinion. Even IMAO's spacemonkey blogger is much funnier than that stupid Fox show.

I'm guessing it was the "join me in a cigar" line. That one got me daydreaming about Ann Coulter.

@#$@ Firewall.

Frank you should sue FOXNEWS. Don't you own the copyright on rightwing humor? They should pay handsomely or at least buy a book.

So far, only one of the parts I found funny has been mentioned.

No IMAO Bonus Points have been awarded at this time.

#9 - Posted by: Frank J. on February 15, 2007 12:29 PM

Fox News should hire Julia Gorin and The Republican Girls Gone Wild

The two funny parts happened simultaneously:
a) The line about Cindy Sheehan's shooting spree
b) The poor audio work on the laugh track behind it where laugher spontaneously, and suddenly, started back up again

#11 - Posted by: Brett on February 15, 2007 02:10 PM

Someone needs to to a Neo-Con humor show formatted like the way 'Mr Show' was. That would be pretty friggin' funny.

#12 - Posted by: AlanABQ on February 15, 2007 02:44 PM

No wait, see, it's subtle. The badness was intentional...in other words, it was a delicately nuanced jab at the notion that conservatives are not funny, and...

(Sigh) no, it sucked. It's doomed to become an oddly ironic laughing stock. Frick!

#13 - Posted by: PaleoMedic on February 15, 2007 05:02 PM

According to LGF, Canadian television is offering a taxpayer funded MUSLIM sitcom (talk about an oxymoron), called Little Mosque on the Prairie. Fox's comedy may suck...but anything's gotta be better than Muslim comedy.

#14 - Posted by: SkyeChild on February 15, 2007 06:48 PM

I would say you found the cigar part and the Convert them to Christianity line funny.

I thought the first clip was pretty sucky, but the Rush/Coulter was amusing. Admittedly, I watch Colbert and find it a thousand times more funny.

#15 - Posted by: Rachel on February 15, 2007 07:59 PM

Coulters: ".....and convert them all to Christianity"

Rush: "Sheehan's cross country shooting spree"

I think that our problem on the right is that we expect too much of our humorists and too little of theirs.

I would love to see "In my world" become a regular bit on the show.
Sort of a violent Opera Man to go to when the funny just isn't there.

#16 - Posted by: TBinSTL on February 16, 2007 05:38 AM

There hasn't been a funny Weekend Update since Nealon stopped doing it. And he was mediocre at best. The best were Miller and those who came before. The rest just bit.

This sucks. I hope they can punch it up and get an actual audience. And probably better writers. *Fingers Crossed*

#17 - Posted by: DesertElephant on February 16, 2007 01:03 PM

1. Howard Dean now getting his meds must be one,and
2. Ann Coulter's line about converting them to Christianity must be the second.

#18 - Posted by: Writer on February 16, 2007 03:24 PM

TBinSTL got it. He wins 500 IMAO Bonus Points.

#19 - Posted by: Frank J. on February 16, 2007 06:18 PM

So, wait. Was that supposed to be funny?
