But if you think, as Obama does, that Reagan's rise to power was premised on a sunny optimism in contrast to an out of control government and a society rife with liberal excess, then you don't understand the conservative movement. Yumpin yimminy, does this kid remember double digit inflation, interest rates (mortgage rates!) around 20%? A stagnant economy coupled with out of control inflation? An America humiliated by Iranian "students" (how they described themselves)? An America struggling with post-Vietnam doubts? Malaise? And Carter's response was to put on a sweater, talk about his nuclear non-proliferation chats with his teenage daughter, and quietly prepare for America becoming the next France. Jimmy Carter is history's greatest monster.
