Learning to Live with McCain
Posted by Frank J. at 11:07 AM | View blog reactions | Comments (69)

You can list all you want about what's wrong with McCain, but it's looking pretty certain he's our nominee and I think its more productive to point out what we're doing wrong. Why? Because if something is our fault, it's in our power to fix it.

If I were to name one thing conservatives are doing wrong with McCain is that our attitudes towards him are too much stick and not enough carrot. If we want McCain to side with us, we have to give him a reason to do it. If he sides against us, we yell at him but he gets praise from the media. If he goes with us, he gets what? How much credit has he gotten from conservatives for his steadfastness on the war?

When McCain goes against the Democrat nominee, the media is going to turn against him. That will be our opportunity to get McCain on our side. What we have to do is reward him every time he does something conservativey if we want him to behave in a conservative way. It's just like with my dog. When she's bad, I can yell at her all I want and she just gets frustrated. But if instead of just yelling at her I give her a command like "come" or "sit" and praise her for doing it, things turn out better for both of us. Similarly, if McCain even mentions a border fence, we all have to be like, "Good Republican! Good good Republican!" and give money to his campaign. Through positive reinforcement, he'll learn that being conservative is the best way to go.

So, people, are you read to praise McCain? The fate of America -- and thus the world -- could rest upon it.

Every time he mentions making the tax cuts permanent, I'll send a dollar, a Scooby snack, and give him a tummy rub.

#1 - Posted by: CraigO on February 6, 2008 11:23 AM

Maybe. But if he bites my hand the deal is off!

#2 - Posted by: MarkoMancuso on February 6, 2008 11:24 AM

No, in all seriousness there is no deal. I'm writing in Fred.

#3 - Posted by: MarkoMancuso on February 6, 2008 11:25 AM

As I seem to recall, I was praising Fred when the rest of you were comparing him to fecal matter.

Nice to see you've all come around, though.

#4 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 11:28 AM

We need "Don't blame me, I voted for Fred" bumper stickers. Like, while the election is still in play.

#5 - Posted by: JohnAnnArbor on February 6, 2008 11:29 AM

Praise Big Mc or Braise him? I like my burger medium well, please. Thats the only way I'd take him.

Here's some thing that might make you say hmmmmmmmm

Last night tornados slammed into Arkansas killing several people injuring more. Now if I were someone who believed God doled out retribution for claiming to speak for Him when one doesn't have either the authority or knowledge to do so, I might wonder about the Rev. Huckster and by extention Mr McCain. But the God I believe in doesn't work that way. The Reverend's does but well he's from Arkansas, he's a little slow. Maybe the Clintonestas will take him in hand. Lucky us.

#6 - Posted by: seanmahair on February 6, 2008 11:31 AM

Q: Since a vote against McCain is pointless at this point, should I vote for Hillary in Virginia next week?
We need to keep their Dem race war going and I figure Hillary has more "anti" vote potential in the general election.

#7 - Posted by: CraigO on February 6, 2008 11:34 AM

Reason praise works with your dog is that (she?) is a domestic animal that has accepted you as her master. I'm afraid mccain has gone feral and the only humane thing to do is put him down.

#8 - Posted by: zip on February 6, 2008 11:38 AM

#7 I agree you can't lose by gaming the Democrats election. If nothing else we can piss some Democrats off. Bring some hand sanitizer to the polling station and expect to be greeted warmly by someone from Act Up on your visit to the polls. Believe me it ain't pretty. Be careful around those Democrats, especially if they offer you a free sex change operation.

#9 - Posted by: BlackwaterJon on February 6, 2008 11:44 AM

I think we first need to learn "Why does he hate us?" Much like the terrorist McCain is not an enemy that can be reasoned with. He must be defeated. Sadly I don't understand who these idiots are that keep voting for him. Do they not get Rush or Hannity where they live? Us Republicans are mind numbed robots who do what we are told, so why is this happening? Sadly I think Laura Ingraham had the best reasons for this, the "Bob Dole effect" he has been in the party long term, he's a war hero, he's put out major legislation, and (my favorite) can get moderate and Democrat votes. Let this be a lesson to you all who vote for McCain, he will ruin the party and create unfixable tears in the party fabric. Who are we going to put up next Lincoln Chaffee, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, how about Joe Lieberman. I didn't leave the Party the party left me.

#10 - Posted by: loomdog on February 6, 2008 11:54 AM

I don't like this "suck it up and support McCain" vibe... please don't....

#11 - Posted by: Jonathan on February 6, 2008 11:55 AM

I think every single super conservative will ignore Rush Limbaugh, Michele Malkin, etc (conservatives must secretly despise these people) and vote for McCain. Most right wing conservatives don't really give a crap about their supposed principles so it is easy to see them going to vote for McCain.

ps William Sledd rules!

#12 - Posted by: Mishkab on February 6, 2008 11:57 AM

I think the problem is too much carrot for McCain. We keep reelecting him when he doesn't deserve it. He's gotten his reelection carrot, now we need to move up from stick to motorcycle chains and straight razors.

#13 - Posted by: Phelps on February 6, 2008 12:03 PM

I can live with McCain because he says he is concerned about global warming and all the problems it is going to cause mankind in the very near future.

#14 - Posted by: Nate on February 6, 2008 12:10 PM

Let's try this praise stuff:

John McCain is even more masculine than John Edwards. He doesn't have a comb-over like Ralph Neas. He didn't have his hand as far in the till as some of the other Keating Five, e.g., Alan Cranston, one of my senators at the time. He served longer in Vietnam than John Kerry. He's not a lawyer.

This is awfully hard.

Good McCain! You gave scientific illiterates like Nate the confidence to express their ignorance. Now, here's a nice, fresh glass of prune juice. Good McCain!

#19 - Posted by: Master Shake on February 6, 2008 12:21 PM

I think I could do this if he would agree to wear a shock collar.

Every time he says the phrases: "strict constructionist", "tax cuts permanent", and "border fence" we send cash and treats.

Every time he says: "path to citizenship", "global warming", or "spirit of bipartisanship" he gets a zap.

#20 - Posted by: CraigO on February 6, 2008 12:29 PM

We keep hearing that it's always good to "spay and neuter"... In McCain's case I would suggest that we start there and then move forward...

#21 - Posted by: ussjimmycarter on February 6, 2008 12:30 PM

John McCain won't screw up the economy as bad as Hillary Clinton.

John McCain will at least delay the arrival of our new jihaddist masters longer than Barrack "lets pull out of Iraq to invade Pakistan" Obama.

John McCain might actually do what he is saying and nominate SC Justices that having at least a passing acquaintance with the constitution, where the Obamanation or Hilldabeast will definitely do as they are saying and appoint more Ginsburgs or worse (John Edwards) to the court.

And to #11 which is better President McCain or President Clinton/Obama? I am at least one of the "suck it up" people you are talking about, but I have never said vote for McCain, I say we must vote AGAINST Clinton/Obama. Even if that means putting McCain into office.

#22 - Posted by: Brian The Adequate on February 6, 2008 12:30 PM

I showed my two Ragdoll kittens a picture of McCain and they became attack cats! And this from the most docile of breeds!

#23 - Posted by: ussjimmycarter on February 6, 2008 12:32 PM

#22

I agree with you here. The STRONG possibility of 4 or 5 Supremes being replaced in the next 8 years should be enough to get all of us to get on with whoever has a chance to beat those two. I dont; know if McCain does, but he will be the nominee and that means he is the only one with any chance.

#24 - Posted by: CraigO on February 6, 2008 12:35 PM

i don't think we're using enough stick on McCain.

i'm voting for clinton or mickey mouse if she doesnt get the nomination.

#25 - Posted by: james on February 6, 2008 12:44 PM

If he appoints Constitutionalist judges, give him a Scooby Snack and a belly rub, and say Good Dog! a few times. If he appoints someone like Souter, grab the scruff of his neck, rub his nose in his mess, and say Bad Dog! in a low but firm voice.

#26 - Posted by: on February 6, 2008 12:46 PM

As I seem to recall, I was praising Fred when the rest of you were comparing him to fecal matter.

OK, which JoeB131 was that? That wasn't even close to correct; it couldn't have been the real one (as it were...).

#27 - Posted by: AlanABQ on February 6, 2008 01:18 PM

Sadly, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I think the only thing we can do (and the most fun for us, quite frankly) is to feed him some peanut butter and take bets on how long it takes him to get it off of the roof of his mouth.

#28 - Posted by: G Fresh on February 6, 2008 01:20 PM

like Hell. McCain can kiss my big yellow butt.

to all of you saying we should vote McCain to keep Hillary out of the White House:
Screw you, my principles are not for sale. That's exactly why this country is in the bind that it's in; because people have sold out their principles for a perceived short-term gain.

This great country has survived worse than Hillary, and it will be there still when the dust settles. Whether or not our principles- our personal honor- will still be there, will remain to be seen.

I know mine will be. Think about yours.

#29 - Posted by: HKpistole on February 6, 2008 01:38 PM

How is McCain going to be better than Hillary, exactly?

McCain believes in this global warming hoax just like Hillary.
McCain has been a big spender and big taxer his whole life just like Hillary.
McCain is out there spouting the rhetoric of universal medical care (but with the obligatory Republican twist that makes no real difference)
McCain was one of the "gang of 14" that tried to derail good judicial nominees.
McCain was front and center on the biggest attack on the 1st Amendment in US history
I suspect McCain wants to kick your dog because he hates you...personally.

#30 - Posted by: Pliny on February 6, 2008 01:42 PM

#27- Alan, that would be all the ones that aren't you, you stalker freak...

Actually, I meant to say "McCain", obviously.

Not that I ever said anything bad about Fred, other than pointing out he had run a truly awful campaign.

#31 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 01:49 PM

Okay, I guess we are seeing the five stages of grief with you guys. We're past denial and anger and we are moving into bargaining. I guess we will get to acceptance, pretty soon.

#32 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 01:51 PM

No chance. Under no circumstances would I ever vote for McAmnesty.

#33 - Posted by: Andrew on February 6, 2008 01:57 PM

Goodbye America. You made it 232 years. No one thought you could make it long. You survived invasions, a civil war, and two world wars. For 232 years you were the last bastion of freedom, independence, and liberty. For 232 years your brave warriors fought and died for those ideals. For 232 years you were the only thing keeping the world from falling to evil. Ignorance and the love of money destroyed you from the inside, while evil nations destroyed you from the outside. Goodbye America. May you rest in peace.

#35 - Posted by: Goodbye America on February 6, 2008 02:09 PM

#32 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 01:51 PM

Hey guess what? Your still a stupid troll!

We don't LIKE Mccain, we haven't come around, we just don't have much choice.

#36 - Posted by: AR on February 6, 2008 02:19 PM

And the moment we start praising McCain, we're stuck in the exact same position we're at right now.

It's going to take a Democrat win to revitalise the party if McCain is the nominee.

#37 - Posted by: Sir Andrew on February 6, 2008 02:23 PM

The problem is that apparently 2\3 of the Republican party is unbelievably liberal now. As evidenced by the myth that Bush was a conservative...

#39 - Posted by: echo5a on February 6, 2008 02:43 PM

#14 - Posted by: Nate on February 6, 2008 12:10 PM

Most of the global warming is caused by the hot air being produced by the enviro-nazis

#40 - Posted by: echo5a on February 6, 2008 02:46 PM

Do none of you have principles? Why do you insist on choosing between a crap pie and a turd sandwich?

Look, even if you don't like RP, we can all agree he's not going to win. A vote for him in the general election is a vote for "none of the above". Take advantage of the opportunity to send a message.

If you vote for McCain, or Hillary, and they win by even one vote, they'll claim that the people sent them a "mandate" and that they have the green light to do whatever they want, constitutional or not, since you said it was OK.

At this point, let Hillary or Obama win. Hopefully we can take congress back and hold them at a stand-still. It'll be much worse if McCain gets in and has a democrat congress sending him bills to sign.

#41 - Posted by: knight_308 on February 6, 2008 02:59 PM

At least my state(mn) went 60% Romney.Of course only 60,000 republicans showed up versus the 200,000 dems for Barry Obama. I don't have to vote against my conscience since a republican presidential candidate never wins in this state. I am looking forward to quiting my job and living off my free gov'mint checks signed by whatever socialist wins.

#42 - Posted by: lastconservativestanding on February 6, 2008 03:11 PM

As I seem to recall, I was praising Fred when the rest of you were comparing him to fecal matter.

Er, I meant Huckabee. HUCKABEE. Dammitall!

#43 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 03:11 PM

#43 Alan, you are sad...

#42- You guys in Minnesota elected a professional wrestler as governor. I guess nominating Mitt was a baby-step towards sanity.

#41- You prove my point about this being more about personality than principles. First, you were willing to nominate a Faux conservative like Magic Underpants Mitt because he wasn't McCain. Now some of you are talking about Hillary or Obama, so that I guess we somewhat conservative people get with the program?

The fact is that you guys are the fringe, not us. Sit it out, McCain will win by growing the party and bringing back Reagan Democrats and Independents.

#44 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 03:23 PM

I'm going to go vote for the lesser of two evils, as usual, but its quite annoying that the lesser evil is still pretty much full blown evil this go around.

#45 - Posted by: Pliny on February 6, 2008 03:29 PM

that would be all the ones that aren't you, you stalker freak...

Said the troll...again. You're projecting your own personal issues on others once again. Please try to grow up a little bit if you're going to attempt to hold a mature discourse with the big kids.

#46 - Posted by: AlanABQ on February 6, 2008 03:33 PM

I have moved on. I have been designed my 2008 campaign button to show my disdain for Obama.

First, I had to look at history:

Leonid Brezhnev, the general secretary of the Communist Party between 1964 and 1982, was renowned for treating male colleagues to a full lip-lock. A photograph of him kissing the Erich Honecker, the East German leader, was reproduced as a protest painting on the Berlin Wall with the caption: "O God, help me survive this deadly love."

I have been searching the internet for a full lip lock between Osama and Obama but I can't seem to find one. Maybe one of you photoshop guys could help out.

My caption is simple (as follows):

Obama Loves Osama

It ain't to late to close ranks behind McCain.

#47 - Posted by: BlackwaterJon on February 6, 2008 03:35 PM

Why won't you losers listen to me? My Pope has a magic hat! Much better than magic underwear, you Mormon-lovers! If you don't vote for Huckabee, he will smite you with his +4 Holy Sceptre of Class Warfare!

#48 - Posted by: JoeB131 on February 6, 2008 03:35 PM

#44 - I'm not sure what you mean; I've never endorsed Romney. Besides Paul, I would've held my nose for Fred, and could possibly do the same for Huckabee (if he had a good VP).

I'm not saying that I would vote for Hobamary, just that it really doesn't matter if they get in or not, and that they could quite easily be better than McCain in terms of uniting the divided conservatives out there.

Ron Paul is only a fringe candidate because of the way we've all been indoctrinated. I don't hold it against anyone, but I just can't understand why a message of personal liberty is so heinous in our world.

From what I've heard, most people like his domestic policy and hate his foreign policy. I can certainly understand that argument. However, Jesus said to remove the log from your own eye before removing the speck from your brother's. In this case, we have to fix our domestic policy, fix ourselves, before we try to fix everyone else.

Who cares how big the party is if it's evil and there's not a gnat's whisker's amount of difference between it and the other party?

#49 - Posted by: knight_308 on February 6, 2008 03:38 PM

Comrade JoeB, your attempts to confuse the capitalist pigs is working wonderfully. Soon, they will be arguing amongst themselves and we will be there the pick up the pieces and create the Worker's Paradise!

#29, wellput.
I can not vote for McCain and crap mon everything I have believed in and fought for. I would rather see this country burned to the ground under Hitlary/Obama than take the slightly slower road with Qwai Chang McCain.
I will let whatever genuine leftist they put up rather than have a lying, fraudulanr piece of crap like McCain take us to the same hell.
The time when it could have been saved is past and it's time to prepare for the worst.
A french Political Scientist and demographer who forecast the fall of the Soviet Unio 7 years in advance had predicted that the US would fall before 2010 and laid out a series of events that would preceed the event. I believe he has been 100% so far and by his time table we are on out LAST election.

#51 - Posted by: BLC on February 6, 2008 03:41 PM

I like your attitude. Although I must say I am not really ready to praise McCain on anything yet until I absolutely have to...that is, when he gets the Republican nomination.

Why not live with Rats and cockroaches?
Or AIDS?
Or Pediphiles?
Or Communists?
Or Satan worship?
Or puss filled sores covering your body?
Or your children enslaved?
All thes ewill be a picnic compared to Qwai Chang McCain's reign.
No, I will never support Mccain and will do ANYTHING to ensure he is never elected.

#30 How is McCain going to be better than Hillary, exactly?

McCain believes in this global warming hoax just like Hillary.

Equally bad agreed

McCain has been a big spender and big taxer his whole life just like Hillary.

Evidence please, McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts cause he wanted simultaneous spending cuts. He voted for the extension of the cuts. McCain is a fairly reliable fiscal conservative from what I can see. Unlike Hillary who is the reigning Senate Queen of Pork, when you out earmark Robert Byrd you are in some serious wastage.

McCain is out there spouting the rhetoric of universal medical care (but with the obligatory Republican twist that makes no real difference)

Again even

McCain was one of the "gang of 14" that tried to derail good judicial nominees.

While I think that forcing the up/down vote was the better way to go, the gang of 14 did break the deadlock on a number of good nominees and prevent a fillibuster of Alito. Better to hope McCain doesn't break his campaign promise on judges than to count on Hillary breaking hers.

McCain was front and center on the biggest attack on the 1st Amendment in US history

Which is one of the reasons I don't like McCain, but Hillary and Obama ain't gonna do any better.

I suspect McCain wants to kick your dog because he hates you...personally.

Good, I don't particulary like the old SOB myself and I don't have a dog.

Now for what you left out:

McCain will better pursue the war on terror.

So the way I see it our lousy choice is between someone who I agree with on 2 important issues

War on Terror and Budget Discpline

Have some hope for on my #1 issue of Judges

And a pair of Socialists who (with a socialist majority in both houses of congress) I disagree with on EVERY issue that is important to me.

So yes, for my country and for my children I will vote for the lesser evil and hope rather than allowing the greater evil to florish.

I don't trust McCain, I don't like McCain, but I loathe Clinton and don't think Obama is ready for prime time, particulary in a time of war.

I understand the desire to cast a protest vote, Hell I voted for the freaking crazy dwarf in 1992 cause I couldn't stomach Daddy Bush. What did all of us who voted for Perot give this country, Slick Willy that is what. So if you really want another 4-8 years of Clintons (and the less fun/more evil one this time) cast your protest vote and feel all selfrightous about it while your country is screwed for the next 30 years by bad judges and new entitlements.

Sometimes you gotta take the possible now and work for the good or perfect later. If conservatives throw this election away we will be sorrier under the Clintbamnation than we would have been under McCain

#49 - Oh the personal liberty we like.

The strict adherence to the Constitution we like.

The refusal to acknowledge the very real danger of Sharia Law humping jihadis? Not so much.

#61 - Posted by: on February 6, 2008 04:37 PM

Ok, we need to step back here. Unfortunately America's overall population has been growing more liberal for a long time now. I don't think it is necessarily that people are getting more liberal in their viewpoints, I just think that we are increasingly being outnumbered due to many contributing factors, and unfortunately this country isn't "majority of the IQ points rules" or "majority of the common sense rules", it is majority of the vote rules, and we may be turning a very bad corner here.

What if Bush was just the beginning? What if McCain is just step 2? What if the choices get worse for us in 4 years, 8 years, etc?
OMG, I just started freaking out.

When I started this comment I was going to work up to a statement about justices being appointed by whoever wins, and who do you want to leave THAT lasting legacy on the country? I know the answer is none of the above, but can we live with 5 Obama or Hillary appointments sailing through the Kennedy Senate confirmation process? I am not sure McCain would be much better, but he is at least saying the right words in that regard (lately). And maybe he will pick a VP that we can live with and maybe he will kick it. Didn't he have cancer twice or something? MCCain will get my vote even if it is just an attempt to keep the Supreme court out of liberal control along with the other two branches.
And to those who think getting Hillary or Obama in the WH gets us the House or Senate back in 2 or 4 years, think about it. The current Congress is at all time lows in approval disapproval ratings, and the populace of this declining land are foaming at the mouth to put another lib in the WH. Yeah, I'm sure that will make congress more palatable... I don't know what we can do.

Maybe #35 Goodbye America above has it right. I used to love her, heart and soul, but those were the 80's when she was in her prime and sexy, and now she is starting to show her many flaws. Unfortunately there aren't any younger sexier places out there to even temp me. Not only the country but the entire world is turning it's back on conservatives it seems. These are depressing times when, yes, we must choose between a crap pie and a turd sandwich. Too much at stake not to choose.

I don't recall McCain promising to eliminate hundreds of billions in spending across the board like needs to be done. He'll be the same kind of fiscal conservative Bush is. Get ready for record deficits.

I don't agree that McCain will better fight the war on terror. He's likely to give us the worst of both worlds on that front; no interrogation of enemies, but no end to a pointless unnecessary war in Iraq either.

Is Hillary better? No
Am I going to vote for McCain? Yes, I don't throw my vote away in general elections.

Am I mad as heck? You bet.

So, people, are you ready to praise McCain?

No.

#64 - Posted by: iamfelix on February 6, 2008 08:36 PM

The only praise I can think of is he married a hottie whose daddy owns a beer distributorship and has tons of money.
Now John will you leave me the hell alone, I didn't take your damn strawberries!

No for me also....

You can't vote for McCain. A Mexican might date my daughter.

Niiiice. But, given the notion of tolerance, would the Mexican be male or female? Y'know, just so I can be prepared...

MSN=McCain Say No

One very good reason to oppose McCain is power.

As Conservatives if we give in and support McCain, regardless if he wins or looses, we loose. We will have been demonstrated to be irrelevant. If we oppose McCain and he looses we demonstrate that we matter and are a factor. Todays Republican spin masters have bet the farm that we are irrelevant. I'm betting we are not and I intend to prove it by opposing McCain at every point.

By opposing McCain I am fighting for long term Conservative power.

I am saying MSN.
