JFK got the ball rolling and danged if we didn’t put some men on the moon and return them safely to Earth before the decade ended!
Locating, extracting, refining and distributing what we already know exists beneath our feet has got to be a lot easier than building an 500 ft tall, 3 stage rocket and all the infrastructure to support it from scratch.
