If you don’t have fancy kindling, and you’re out in the woods, YouTube suggests finely shredded birch bark.

interesting article. If you’re going to pack a firesteel throw a couple of cotton balls saturated with vaseline into a zip lock. They’re surefire if you fluff them up and hit them with a spark. Only the hardcore carry char and they spend more time freezing.
