what is the point of wasting years of your life on videogames? I can see trying it out for a few days to see the wonder of it, but beyond that, aren't there an infinite number of things that are more interesting?

See, while there is a story, it's focus is on just giving the player lore and background information. NPCs are few and hard to find, and combined with item descriptions and the details put in the actual environments themselves, are your only sources for story. Dark Souls doesn't want the player to play simply because of the story; rather, it would prefer you play and continue for the sake of the awesome gameplay, level design, and sense of wonder you get from exploring its incredible world.

The game wants you to figure out nearly everything by yourself, and most people will be intimidated and put off. Hell, there is no way of knowing which direction is the best to take without fighting the first few enemies there and judging the overall difficulty of an area from that. I personally recommend you 3 things. Try to avoid using a guide unless you have no idea how to proceed; the initial blind playthrough comes only once. Second, learn from your mistakes and try to avoid repeating them. Finally, remember to talk to NPCs multiple times until they start repeating the same line over and over again. Good luck!

Toggle the display on the items in your inventory and read the item descriptions. Listen closely to the way npcs word things. Look closely at the environment. You will start putting it all together until you have that eureka moment. There is a very deep and involved storyline. Just like everything else in dark souls though, you have to fight for it.

Keep up the game reviews and commentary Frank. You can help people like me sort out the good from the bad before wasting money on it.

For me, an open world adventure/rpg type game had better darned well have a good story. Otherwise there is no sense of achievement. I mean, when I finish a game like that, I actually consider myself the hero of some fake world. It's a pretty good feeling.

Like when your wife is all "hey, have you fixed that thing in the kitchen yet?", you can be all like "Nay woman, I have been battling through the dark hordes of Agarnath in order to save the fair lands of Embril from certain doom and strife and more doom. I've no time for your tiresome chores. Begone wench, I have a kingdom to run!"

On second thought, maybe games like that are bad.
