- Gandalf the white is a demi god in a fantasy world of magic and mosters that possess god like powers from a far away land called Valinor. Gandalf is equipped with an magical elvan sword (Glamdring), vast knowledge of magery and a magical staff. These weapons and tools have been enchanted in some way to vanquish foes. For example, balrog of morgoth assaulted gandalf the grey with a giant, firey sword and still Glamdring deflected the blow. Gandalf has assisted in battling the nectromancer in the hobbit and also single handedly defeated A Balrog of Morgoth at the bridge of Khazad-Dum in Moria.
- Darth Vader is a fallen jedi master of immense skill that only a few can match. Darth Vader exists in a science fiction, fanstasy universe located in a galaxy far, far away. Darth Vaders’ skill is not limited to his skill with a lightsaber, but has mastery in both the dark side and powers of the jedi. Darth Vader is also more machine than man, twisted and evil.. This would mean that he would have emmense strength in a hand to hand situation.

Lets face it people, gandalf the white has some impressive magic but darth vaders skill with a lightsaber would overwhelm the white wizard and would be forced to used greater magic such as lightning to combat vader. Lightsabers can block lightning and vader blocked han solos blaster attacks by simply raising his hand and he even switched hands which shows control and precision. I think that vader ultimately would prevail here but would come out scarred and weary.

Vader tossed an old man with a built-in Taser down a well.
Gandalf killed a 40 foot tall lava monster after being pulled into a bottomless pit by it, fighting the beast from the lowest pit to the top of the highest local mountain, and came back for more.
Gandalf would Pown Vadar.

In a fight between someone with a lightsaber and someone without a lightsaber, I always go with the guy with the lightsaber.

This could change though if the other guy has multiple high powered guns and explosives. But in this case, Vader for the win!

ERB on YouTube has them both in fights, but not with each other. In this one, I’d have to take Vader, but that is mostly because I tend to side with Star Wars in all such questions (e.g. I believe a Star Destroyer would just laugh as it destroyed the Enterprise).

As a big a fan of Darth Vader as I am, I’m with Rodney Dill on this one. You’re talking about an ancient immortal being with unknown levels of power compared to a man-machine hybrid with the somewhat defined powers of the dark side and a light saber.

What killed Gandalf (temporarily)? Another ancient immortal being. What killed Vader? Force lightning. Gandalf could probably call down actual lightning bolts that would make force lightning look like licking a 9 volt.

Although immortal, their physical bodies could be destroyed by violence—thus Gandalf truly died in the fight with the Balrog, beyond the power of the Valar to resurrect him; Eru Ilúvatar himself intervened to send Gandalf back.
