Guns Are for Closers!

Strangely enough, Newsweek (I thought it was dead?) had something worth reading: an article by David Mamet on guns and freedom.

It really got me thinking, though, we spend so much time on these individual issues like guns and health care, but what we need to take on as a country is the topic of freedom overall. What are rights? What is the purpose of the government? All our arguments are because we disagree on those questions, but that’s not usually where the discussion is. If we want to change things, we need people thinking on these fundamental questions.

So what conservatives need is not what particular policies will help — we’re not to the point that most people will listen yet. We need to keep engaging, like Mamet is, on these questions at the core of our society. When people understand what rights are, then they understand what government should and shouldn’t be. And when they understand what government is, the specific policy questions follow rather easily.

So let the liberals play the small ball of trying to ram through particular policies; we need to play the long game of where is society headed. We don’t want to go back to the old statist ideals; we want to go forward to the nation based on freedom we’ve never quite achieved before.

How do we do that? I dunno. But put me among those many voices saying the focus of conservatism needs to be culture.

As the founders stated in the Declaration of Independence, we derive our rights from God (stated as the Creator). Government does not exist to grant those rights, but rather to secure them. Since the government does not grant our “unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”, it has no authority to take them away. Alan Keyes has been writing about this aspect of our rights.

Small ball is all they know and all they need. You turn on the morning news and, aside from maybe a fire and a holdup, it’s a litany of what they’re up to: future Dem voters (illegal immigrants), gay marriage, how great the president is, what great green technology is coming our way (that never seems to live up to any promise), gun control…the termites are always chewing at the house.

Socialism: Never have so many devoted so much for something so lousy.

What a well written discussion of the facts, not the hype. This essay should be mandatory reading for anyone who wishes to discuss the issue of gun control…or any other mandatory govenment program. Thank you for the link Frank. I assure you, I never would have gone to Newsweek on my own.

Maybe it took putting Newsweek out of business for Newsweek to realize that under Obama things weren’t working out so well.

  5. Jimmy says:

And all good gun salesmen HAVE to be good closers.

I guess that amounts to a tautology, doesn’t it?

  6. Writer says:

What we need is a Clause in Feinstein’s Gun Control Bill stating that none of its Previous Clauses can take effect until an Independent Counsel has fully investigated Fast and Furious and issued indictments.

Keep America Beautiful, hang a Socialist.
