Star Wrek

This whole thing about the Star Terk director J.J. Abrams taking over Star Wars keeps making me want to make an amalgamation of the two series’ names, but then all you get is either Star Trek or Star Wars (or maybe Star Wrek — actually, that’s pretty good; I’m now making that the title of this post — just give me a sec… okay, now I’m back).

Anyway, this just seems so wrong. Star Trek and Star Wars are too separate things — in fact, nerds have written many theses explaining the differences of the two series — so it’s just seems so wrong for one person to be running both. They just should not have the same feel at all — nothing the same. Though Ace makes a good point:

I mean, the Abrams Star Trek was a fun film, but it’s wasn’t Star Trek. It was the Star Trek characters in an action film of lens flares and explosions and nonsense red matter. But I’m fine with that. I just don’t want that also for Star Wars. I want something new and exciting — not a slightly different flavor of something we already got.

So I’m against this. And really, one guy controlling both of the biggest nerd franchises seems like something the government needs to get in there and break up. That’s too much power over pasty, overweight guys who have never touched a woman.

Hurm… though if Star Wars was controlled by J.J. Abrams from the beginning, we would never have gotten that stupid midi-chlorians explanation for the Force. Though we also never would have found out what the Force does at all.

Look, I’m as big a red matter hater as you are likely to run into outside of Comic-Con. It was so cringe-inducing that it took me several minutes to recover any semblance of suspension of disbelief. (Actually, turning over the Enterprise to Cadet Kirk was worse, but, then, I’m a military guy, so maybe it _would_ bug me more).

That said, I enjoyed this article Steven Padnick at Tor.com:

And, with all due resepct, what the @#$% is up with my avatar? What _IS_ that?

I just hope he doesn’t try to inject any of his “originality” into the films. JJ Abrams makes nice visuals and fun action, but his stories are inane and pedestrian.

Man, did you see Super 8? I can sum that film up in 10 words: “Angry monster hates humans then decides he doesn’t and leaves.”

Best not be doing any of that to my classics, JJ.

WordPress (this blog runs on WordPress) will use your globally-recognized avatar (from http://gravatar.com) … if you have one. If you don’t, it makes something up. That’s what it made up for you. Congratulations.

You can go make your own. My current one is me with a butterfly on my head.

“Star Wreck” – NASA’s latest short film describing their Muslim outreach program.

I got nothin’ else. I’ve hated Star Wars since it’s first TV advertisement decades ago. Don’t EVEN get me started…

First, JJ is not George Lucas…so I cannot complain. That’s like getting a president that is not Obama. It’s a step up no matter how small a step.

Second, JJ has said he likes Star Wars more than Star Trek…so maybe that is helpful somehow. Especially if he is a real love/hate fan of Star Wars.

Third, JJ is not writing it, just directing it. Michael Arnt has been said to be writing it based on whatever tripe Lucas had already written.

Fourth, if JJ does Star Trek and Star Wars, maybe we can finally see a star destroyer completely obliterate the Enterprise, as we all know would happen.

A whole fleet of star destroyers couldn’t hit one converted freighter with a faulty star drive, and you think they’d be any tribble at all for the mighty Enterprise?
    Blasphemy!
The Force is just bleed-over from the Q Continuum!

Maybe he will make Star Wars have SCIENCE and tachyons, and be about racism or something. That would be different.

I personally thinks Star Wars is a wreck anyway. The first three movies were OK, the next three movies were annoying in the extreme so not looking forward for a new edition of the “whining Skywarker family” and their scruffy friends. Especially if they trot out Harrison Ford and Mark Hammil. I may have to turn in my Nerd card but I loved the newest Star Trek, it had action, adventure, romance and comedy, everything you could ask in a movie. If Abrams could do that for Star Wars I might go see it. Maybe.
