@5 – It’s not so much resistance as “opting out”. A lot of Fed programs are of the type “do what we tell you or we won’t give you money for schools, roads, welfare, medicaid, etc.”

So they forgo the money & do whatever seems smart instead of doing what they’re told. Feds can’t do a damn thing.

The sad thing is that there is a need for this in New Hampshire, as that was once considered the sane part of the northeast (with the exception of the part of Maine that is really Cold Alabama). It must be because of immigration from Vermont and Massachusetts. But I wouldn’t have thought they’d breed true.

Jimmy, from the beginning the target has beem 20k, but now it is generally accepted among free-staters that far fewer, even 1k, would be effective enough to justify moving. The new FSP paradigm is a snowball, not an avalanche.

I’m not so sure. Federal law may supersede state law, but any power that the federal government has relies on it’s ability to force compliance; depending on the level of resistance that might even require military action, I’m not so sure there would be any stomach for that, especially within the military itself. Our soldiers tend to be more patriotic than the average person. I don’t see that fact as being good news for any government body seeking to limit our freedom.

See, that’s the dilemma. There are all sorts of political theories that insist they’ll prove themselves if they’re ever really tried out. Some (like libertarianism) make better cases than others (like whatever the hell the Occupiers want), but they all have the same problem: there’s no room. All the good land is taken, and civilized people don’t conquer anymore. We don’t have sophisticated enough simulations either. The best outsiders can do is something like this Free State Project, which wouldn’t be true libertarianism because the federal government would still have all the real power — and it doesn’t take kindly to uppity states, as we’ve seen with Arizona and immigration.

I don’t think much of this idea, personally. It rubs me the wrong way. Politics are almost always the wrong reason to move, especially if your explicit goal is to force your own politics on your new neighbours. And even in the unlikely event that it worked, I think the situation would get very bad before it had a chance of getting good. But man, part of me really wants to see what would happen.
