Tau Dades, fortunately, in the State of Washington, we don’t have a city named “Washington” and still get to refer derisively to “the other Washington,” the federal cesspool. It’s bad enough to have “Seattle” where even people who migrated there 20 years ago are now disgusted with the city and it’s stupid-ass politics.

@11 – Yes and no. “New Yorker” can be used to refer to either a resident of the state or of the City. It just depends on context.

In this case, I don’t think the context was ambiguous enough that a resident of the state should feel insulted.

Full disclosure: I lived near Saratoga Springs for about 7 months while I was in the Navy. It’s a beautiful area, and full of very nice people.

As a New Yorker, I appreciate the opportunities Mayor Bloomberg provides to feel like a true resident, namely when I swear and gesture with as much attitude as can be mustered in response to his limply petty fascism. Or maybe we could just elect a damn mayor who fights crime and not big sodie pop cups. My middle finger is sore.

I knew New York was wussified when I saw the utter WIMPINESS of police response to the Occupy crowd. Seattle has gone through the same transformation-the WTO riots here turned the police into scaredy cats, afraid to uphold law and order.
