100 Years of Bondage. I Feel Like G’Kar

[High Praise! to American Digest and The Beacon]

The United States in 1913 had no federal income tax, no central bank, no social security taxes, no general sales taxes, no Securities and Exchange Commission, no Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, no Department of Health and Human Services, no National Labor Relations Board, no federal this, that, and the other as far as the eye can see.

But, how did people function without Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi dictating how they live their lives?

  2. Karen says:

Any Babylon 5 reference gets automatic bacon. So ~ to the title.

  3. Mr. Right says:

And then along came our first “Progressive” President, Woody Wilsonpecker, and the slow grinding end of our freedoms began!

  4. Kandll says:

But back then child labor was legal. Why do you hate the children Harvey?

  5. Carpenter says:

the article this is based on is just more Libertarian Propaganda!

“In 1913, exactly a century ago, the United States was a flourishing, economically advanced country…..”

What a load of horseshiite that is. People still lives in shacks without insulation. Few had indoor plumbing. The robber barons made millions and they paid people like my grandparents less than a dollar a day.

Ahhh yes, but are you looking at the situation from the perspective of what a dollar can’t buy today, a century later, or what it could back then?

Also, are you factoring in that most buildings extant in 1913 were built before the advent of indoor plumbing? (An innovation which, like the first mobile/cellular phones, were, initially, the novel accessories of the well-to-do.)

As for the so-called “robber barons”…who else were offering employment? Were your grandparents navvies on the railroads or oilfield workers tending to the horsehead pumps? Were they in service to those affluent people as maids, cooks, chauffeurs or gardeners? I’d lay 1913 dollars down that from their graves they’d rise up and give you a reproving cuff to the back of your head before looking at you with loving sincerity and telling you that such employment, humbling as it may have been, beat, by any measure, being unemployed or having to scratch on Uncle Sam’s door for a weekly dole. Further, it was ambition which pulled people out of those jobs and out of the cold water walkups and three-deckers. Oilers and maintenance men who worked on the railroads often opend up their own garages, working as mechanics, repairing the “horseless carriages” which began taking over the roads.

America was in those days a rising industrial behemoth.

But, by 1917, empires were falling, Marxist-Leninism was surging westward, carried, subtly, in the minds of academics and intellectuals like Wilson, who desired elevation to the level of those reviled “robber barons” without doing anything to warrant such baronial economic status. Not one innovation, discovery, or advancement. Just craven envy and covetousness of the successes of others. Not being able to create or innovate on their own, they sought to pull down the efforts of others.

    ‘Nuff Sed.

  7. Harvey says:

Capitalist Swine brand bacon to Bunkerhillbilly! :-)

  8. Carpenter says:

I don’t like what the Liberals have done anymore than you do but..

the bottom line is that you Libertarians WOULD take away my 90 yr. old mothers Social Security. I don’t say ya wouldn’t because I know you would.

You Libertarians would defund the Prescription Drug program that my mother needs.

You Libertarians would have never allowed my father to receive a fair wage and a pension working for a Union company that worked for the Government. Also you would have never allowed my father to receive a settlement after being mildy exposed to toxic chemicals for many years. That settlement paid (or paid off) for my mothers home and you would have made sure she never had one.

You Libertarians are the very very very worst of the worst! Your even worst than the Liberals.

  9. Harvey says:

@8 – Carpenter, I’m beginning to suspect that you’re not IMAO’s target audience.

  10. 4of7 says:

Your mother and father should be your responsibility, not the governments.

  11. Carpenter says:

they EARNED their Social Security and their pensions you G damned ^^^#@ing thieves! You Libertarians truly are the scum of the earth.

  12. Harvey says:

    @11 – REALLY not IMAO’s target audience…

  13. Basil says:

Damn, Carpenter, has somebody done cut off funding for your meds?

  14. Oppo says:

Years and years (and years) from now, it will be possible to get a smile out of Harvey by randomly dropping this quote into conversations: “you G damned ^^^#@ing thieves! You Libertarians truly are the scum of the earth.”

(I can see into the future as well as any Iranian inventor.)

  15. Bunkerhillbilly says:

[Taps Carpenter on the shoulder and reminds that 1) ’tis Sunday, the Sabbath, and 2) Commandment Number Two proscribes “the taking of the Lord’s name in vain”.]

    Mind the lightning, friend.

  16. Harvey says:

    @14 Bacon to you, sir!

No need to wait years and years. In fact, I think “you G damned ^^^#@ing thieves! You Libertarians truly are the scum of the earth.” should become the traditional first comment for every one of my posts :-D

    It’s the new “First!”

  17. Bunkerhillbilly says:

Continues in reminder mode by pointing out that said Social Security is not in any account-specific, Al Gorean lockbox, but instead subject to the predations of more Liberal than Libertarian inclinations.

However if Brother Carpenter wishes to continue to take random, double-aught blasts through various ideological doors in the hopes of repelling unidentified pillaging invaders, he should be prepared to deal with the consequences of gross target inaccuracy.

  18. Mr. Right says:

    @ Carpenter

No one is proposing eliminating or seriously cutting Soc Sec payments to existing or soon-to-be retirees who have no more earning power or any ability to plan for a future without such payments (except in rare cases where such individuals are means-tested out as being independently wealthy and having real need of them)!

Such talk is nothing but leftist propaganda designed to stop any debate about the future of Soc Sec, which, if nothing is done, has no future at all, and all the rest of us, who are still pouring money into it with no other options to protect our futures will truly be screwed and left to starve in the streets much like they inaccurately accuse us of wanting to do to the current recipients! Oh, the cruel irony of it all!

Wake up — you are being programmed by lies and propaganda (and then being told that you are brilliant if you agree and stupid if you dissent)!

  19. Mr. Right says:

“…except in rare cases where such individuals are means-tested out as being independently wealthy and having real need of them”

SHOULD READ: “…except in rare cases where such individuals are means-tested out as being independently wealthy and having NO real need of them”

    PIMF!

  20. Weisshaupt says:

“they EARNED their Social Security and their pensions you G damned ^^^#@ing thieves! You Libertarians truly are the scum of the earth.”

Yes they earned the money to pay for their SS. Then Liberals and Big government came along and forced them at gunpoint to “invest it” with the Bernie Maidoff of Big Government, the SSA, who takes that hard earned cash and buys government debt with it, which is turn is spent by Big Govt politicians on their bribes to buy the votes of their constituents. You are half-right Carpenter.. there are thieves involved.

The money is gone. Spent. By the very people whom were entrusted to “invest it wisely” – The Social Security trust fund is a filing Cabinet full of IOUs. Explain now why an entire generation should now make good on those IOUs when they will never collect SS themselves ( its an unsustainable PONZI scheme) and derived no benefit from the things that money went to purchase? Liberals just think everyone else on this planet is here to serve them and give them what they want- don’t they? And given that.. what makes liberals different from any 5 year old?
