Re: WaE’s title – I’ll point out that, if government gets increasingly worse, then every generation is correct.

And every generation has been correct since… well… I’ll let YOU tell me what the turning point was… in the comments, please.

    Well, it DID improve somewhat in 1779.

  2. hatless in hattiesburg says:

    the three strongest downturns: lincoln, wilson, fdr. but then reagan hit the reset button, and all the doonesburian dolts were very incorrect for those eight great years.

  3. c64wood says:

    @hatless – That’s what I was thinking, Lincoln, Wilson and Roosevelt. Major downturns with those 3

  4. jw says:

    i’m not seeing downturn in leadership under Lincoln. fixing the lack of leadership that preceeded him, imo.

    In my lifetime what stands out is the power the ever left leaning press discovered from their actions towards the Vietnam War and especially Watergate, not as much as they want or think they have but enough to destroy themselves if not the entire country.

  6. Oppo says:

    I’ll go with Janeane and say Wilson (infinite boos!) for Progressivism and all it implies (ugh!), the income tax (infinite ughs!), and subsuming the interest of the nation to international interests — among other things. He generally disdained the Constitution as a plan of government and as a limit on it. This isn’t an interpretation — he was quite open and vocal about it.

    @6 Oppo

    you forgot the caps lock.

  8. Oppo says:

    @7 jw: Right. I just couldn’t do it. Just couldn’t. Not even in the cause of parody.

    (Ironically, that makes me an anti-capitalist, and JANEANE a staunch capitalist.)

    We appear to be the only ones on the site today.

    @9 Oppo

    yep, your puns seem to have driven everyone screaming into the night.

    the absence of harvey bothers me though. i hope all is ok.

    btw,it makes jeanane a CAPITALIST. i think.

  10. Oppo says:

    The upper-case / lower-case duality is so repressive and hidebound. Letters should be free to self-identify as either/or — or italic, if they want to — and you should respect their choice. Keep your laws off my body text!

    Theme song: “I shot the serif, . . .”

  11. jw says:

    is that why i seem to be sans serif these days?

  12. willy says:

    February 3, 1913. Income tax amendment was ratified. Without it Roberts might have overturned obamacare.

    Also Al Capone would have avoided prison for “satisfying a public demand”.

  13. Harvey says:

    @12 – I’m agreeing with you. It set the precedent that everything you earn and own belongs to the government first, and letting you even keep a dime is a favor they do you.
