Zoom In & Enhance!

Posted on August 12, 2014 9:00 pm

Quite possibly the TV trope I find most annoying:

This video does more of a direct parody of the concept, especially the question “what the heck are these people typing on their keyboards? Isn’t picture enhancement more of pointy-clicky-mousey activity?”

Lots of NSFW in it, though.

    I enjoyed the ride,
but since when is “Freeze and Enhance” NSFW?

Another pet peeve in movies is when the computer nerd goes “Annnd. . . .” and pushes the Enter button to show the result of his canoodling with the program.

All real geeks hit “Enter” reflexively, instictively, without a second’s pause for dramatic effect. It’s more of a git-er-done kind of thing.

I have the Lumia 1020. The camera on that this is so good I can literally, YES Literally, take a pic of my daughter. Zoom into her eye and see my reflection. It is a dark shadow vaguely me-shaped but still my reflection.

@2 JN – Yeah, but I’ll bet you don’t have to punch in two dozen keystrokes to make the zooming-in part happen :-)

I love all that generic boilerplate language designed to “sound technical and computery.” “Center, reset…”

My favorite one was in “Jurassic park,” where the little girl grabs the computer and says something like, “This is Unix. I can do this.” In other words, “I see it’s running the Unix operating system so I know everything about every program on it.” (From the writers’ standpoint, it was “Use an esoteric-sounding computer word.”)

  5. JN says:

    No keystrokes at all.

Usually I alternate from zoomed to not-zoom while saying Da-Da-Duuuhhhhh!!!!.

True geeks only use command prompts

  7. Mythilt says:

c64wood, true geeks use what ever is most elegant and efficient.

one thing that all this Hollywoodized pseudo-geekery has created is the ability for I.T. guys with a little bit of showmanship to always manage to look like fricken geniuses. I have 6 screens and 4 keyboards at my desk for just this reason. I’ve actually heard the owner of the company describe me as “just like one of those guys in the movies”.

One of my favorite tricks is a simple program that you point to a previously written file and it spits out text from that file on every keystroke. So you just pretend to type really really fast while making up some computer gibberish like they do in the movies and what appears on screen is the code you wrote earlier and tested when nobody was bothering you….and then you ceremoniously hit “ENTER” and the illusion is complete.
