S-s-s-s-s-mokin’!

Have you seen the new ad from the Herman Cain campaign?

[Direct link]

CBS calls it “bizarre” and notes that the ad is, currently, unlisted. Which means you can’t go to the Cain YouTube channel and find it unless you know where to look.

ABC takes the opportunity to run down a list of Cain campaign staff with “interesting” backgrounds.

The Atlantic asks, “For real?

Rather than go on, let me sum up the reaction: the ad generated a lot of criticism from people who already didn’t like Herman Cain.

I’m not a smoker, so it didn’t particularly appeal to me. But smokers don’t like being criticized, just like everybody else.

Obama smokes, but hides it. Cain’s campaign manager smokes, and posts it on YouTube.

I’m wondering how this is going to play out.

  1. My dad died of smoking, my wife won’t quit, I haven’t smoked in almost 6 years — and I LOVED it. There’s a commercial in NYC now showing fat kids sucking down sugary soda and the mounds of sugar they’re ingesting, because Nanny Bloomberg’s a [EXPLETIVE DELETED], and does not understand that legal activities are NOBODY’S BUSINESS. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it until they change: The only freedoms liberals respect are A) their own freedom of speech and assembly (not yours), and B) the freedom to put their genitalia wherever they want. So it’s OK for the Scotts company to fire a guy for smoking cigarettes, but if they fired a guy for having sex with anything on feet or hooves, they’d be crucified.

    Liberals are evil.

  2. I got an email from him – Mark Block – with that YouTube in it and inviting me to “get involved.” And I’m already on the “team.” Strange add – strange guy. This is a bit of head-scratcher, Basil.

  3. This ad suits me fine. My current preferences for the Republican candidates are:

    1) Cain
    2) Perry
    3) Gingrich
    4) Mystery candidate who suddenly appears out of nowhere
    5) Romney

  5. I have been a smoker since 1963. I refuse to quit because it was drummed into my head by parents, teachers, 4H leaders, coaches, siblings and friends that “NOBODY LIKES A QUITTER”. I was also given a lawful order in 1966 to “SMOKE ‘EM. IF YA GOT ‘EM”. So you can see my problem. However, I have been out of cigarettes for the last three years. So I’m ok with that since the order did not tell me that I had to buy any if I was out. But don’t expect me to quit.

  6. Cain is the greatest and we will be going door to door for him when the time comes.

However, I really hated that ad. The guy was not very convincing with his continually shaking his head no as he said things. It did not look like he believed what he was saying. The cigarette was gross and added nothing to the message.

Perhaps it was an experimental ad mock up that was accidentally leaked. Maybe they are aiming at people very different from us, because it was a real turn off for me.

  7. I love it. Like Burt, I’ve been out of smokes for about 6 years now. The last time I started, it was mostly because I got tired of people demonizing smokers. I was always a happy smoker.

So here’s the deal. Mebbe Mr. campaign chief didn’t seem sincere. Some folks at H/A think CAIN!‘s smile is creepy. They miss the message:

CAIN! embraces liberty, and he’s not going to demonize you fbr it.

  8. LOVE this ad!!! Finally, a politician that understands what America has lost! That simple act of smoking a cigarette says it all.

Incidentally, I smoked years ago, quit, and have no desire to start again…but, if I suddenly decide I want to have a cigarette five years from now, that’s my decision…not Barry or Michelle Obama’s.

  9. I love it – We need to get our freedoms back America- and yes, the freedom to do harm to our own bodies if we choose. Smoker or none smoker – you should want Cain in office- I think he is the only candidate that can do something good for this country and turn us back from the edge that we are currently hanging on to under O’Bamer!!

  10. Congratulations, Herman, you now own the smokers voting bloc. Is that really what you were going for?

The ad is truly one of the most bizarre in politics. I liked Cain before, but the more I learn about him, the creepier he becomes to me.

  11. Having seen 6 close relatives die of lung cancer since I was young, I never smoked and thought it smelly and stupid. That said, it’s your decision, not some nanny clown to decide for you. Obama is a smoker, what more needs to be said?

  12. Good example of Christian liberty. God didn’t say you can’t smoke some socialist decided that you couldn’t. Life is full of choices as a matter o fact as an Arminian I think that freedom of choice is the ultimate gift our Lord gave us. You Calvinist will probally say I was predestined to get off the leaf, I think I chose.

  13. The background song might be a Tea Party anthem. The original video definitely was.

Reminds me of a recent book by a college friend, “The War on Smokers, and the Rise of the Nanny State”

A good fightback message for many people.
Herman must be getting some ideas from Palin about how to grab the spotlight away from the Rockerfeller RINOs who wanted this to be a Rommney/Perry race. Stir a subtle controversy, and force them to fight on your turf. Its kinda like swordplay, a deft hand scores points, swinging wildly dont work.
