I didn’t get people running with the whole 6% of COVID deaths thing like it was some revelation. I thought we already knew most people who die had a contributing factor; it didn’t seem like new information.

I don’t see what Trump said about McCain as evidence Trump would insult random people from WWII. McCain said bad things about him but no one who died in WWII ever said something bad about Trump.

I’d pay $30 to watch Black Widow this weekend — and I don’t even care that much about Black Widow — but I’m not paying that for another “Hey, we turned a cartoon into live-action!” cash-in.

When I earned minimum wage, I got $5.05 an hour in Idaho. I could not afford rent at that wage, but I was a teenager still living with my parents, so it didn’t come up. I used the money to buy books for college.

Of course, now these shootings usually fade in concern before the more immediate problem of not wanting your house or place of business burned down.

Dark and gritty is good for Batman and the Punisher but few other superheroes.

I really think Batman would work better as a TV series, Netflix Daredevil being a good template for it. Batman is fine fighting mobsters and more grounded villains; he doesn’t need a $200 million special effects movie.
Batman actually comes off as silly to me when he joins with the Justice League to fight aliens; it really emphasizes he’s just a guy in a costume.
That said, he would win in a fight with Superman.
Oh yeah, when does Superman finally go into public domain? I’d love to try to make an interesting Superman story because it seems so difficult.

The only time superhero masks seemed to work was the 1989 Batman. As a kid, I was convinced it was another actor than little Michael Keaton playing Batman.

I remember one thing that surprised about that Space Force Show is that China was the villain. Despite the Chinese government being a good villain, you don’t see that very often for obvious reasons.

After disassembling the switch panel and the light fixture and using a multimeter, I diagnosed that the problem was I needed to change the lightbulb.
I guess just some LED bulbs are cheapo and will go bad after a year or two but that’s way different than when an incandescent bulb burns out and makes it look like you have a weird electrical problem (turns on briefly when you turn the switch off, etc.).

Partisanship means you could have one of the worst presidents in history but most of the attacks on him will still be stupid nonsense.

The mistake was putting the gun right to my head. Now I know where the gun is and I can grab it and disarm you before you can react. If you stood a few feet back and pointed the gun at me, it would be a different story.

What I never would have guessed when all this happened is that the anti-Trump people on the right would end up as even bigger principle-less grifters than the pro-Trump people.

Biden is older than the last four presidents (including Trump). Clinton, George W., and Trump were actually all born the same year, 1946.

It seems like you don’t hear a lot about discrimination against Asians, even though such discrimination exists (and they faced horrible discrimination int he past). I’m guessing because Asians — financially — tend to do better than most Americans on average.
As a race, they’re not narrative friendly to the current most popular narrative on race. So they kind of get ignored.

The two parties to me are just two different choices of directions away from where I would like the country to go, but I don’t get depressed because I’m a Christian and I try not to put my trust in temporary things.

I still can’t believe Disney+ didn’t have any other Star Wars or Marvel series ready near launch. I know they already got a ton of subscribers, but it seems like they would have captured more people without kids if they released those one after the other.
We’re going to have a second season of The Mandalorian before the first of the Marvel series — announced well before Disney+ was launched — is out. Are the people making those just having a bunch of trouble behind the scenes?

I paid $20 for the Trolls sequel. My three older kids watched it five times in the 48 hours they had, and I felt I got my money’s worth. I don’t see paying $30 for live-action Mulan that should eventually be on that platform for “free.”
For one, there’s just something I plain don’t like about the naked cash-grab of making live-action versions of all their animated movies. Plus, my kids aren’t big Mulan fans.
I would easily pay $30 for early access to Black Widow and probably about any other Marvel movie. Winchester had just been born with Endgame came out, and I would have easily paid $50 to be able to watch that at home.

I was thinking of that silly “We need morality more black and white in video games article”, and from a Christian perspective, morality is black and white.
But all people are gray. There are no clear good guys and bad guys.

I realized from watching the Mandalorian doc on Disney+ I’m from the expanded universe generation of Star Wars fans. Return of the Jedi came out when I was four and Phantom Menace when I was in college. Growing up, the only new Star Wars existed in my head (with help of books).
Had a dreams a year before Ep. I was released of finally getting to see a new Star Wars movie in theaters. I just could not believe that what I always wanted since I was a child was actually happening. Don’t think it’s possible for me to ever anticipate something as much as that.
Oh yeah. When Phantom Menace was being announced, that was pre-YouTube. Had to spend like an hour trying to download the whole trailer and maybe a QuickTime update. No wonder kids today scream about dumb things; everything is easy for them and they don’t have any real problems.

The left get upset when businesses don’t share their politics but they should be happy because the left are idiots and their politics are terrible and if a business was dumb enough to be just like them it would probably go bankrupt.

Joel Richards, who narrated the first Superego, is back for the sequel. I remember when I found out the first was becoming an audiobook and got a list from him of all my made up scifi words so I could tell him how to pronounce them. That was surreal.
I hate making up scifi words. It’s my least favorite part of science fiction writing. My first draft is always filled with a bunch of brackets where I later have to make up some word or name to go there.

The whole point of this country is a rebuke to the whole might makes right argument. You have rights even you can’t get an angry mob behind you. Anyone who is part of a mob or encourages a mob has no moral standing to look down on a Confederate.

Despite all its faults, there is something special about this country, and if we forget that, we’re in trouble.

Just look at the aftermath of George Floyd. They’re knocking down statues and making declaration they know will never be followed (“Abolish the police!”), but are they taking on police unions and qualified immunity — things that would mean putting pressure on “their own side”?

Anyway, overall a bit confusing for kids today with the specific 50s/80s references, but the core drama still holds up.

I see some conspiracy theories that old episodes being taken down from Netflix and Hulu is to make the movement look dumb and petty, but when you have ever changing and arbitrary rules with a disproportionate punishment if you ever break them, this is what happens.

BLM lost the messaging because there wasn’t enough separation of rioting from protesting. Blame the left who tried to justify stores being burnt down as legitimate protest. Now when people see a protest, they assume violence will follow and that’s the focus and not the message.

I assume more than 95% of the protest is peaceful, but the coverage is like 80% of destruction and no one really knows what’s going on.

Well, we’ve successfully moved the debate from how to reform the police to whether to not people are overreacting to their cities being looted and set on fire.
It isn’t the protestors fault. I don’t know what they can do to keep rioters from taking all the headlines. Does seem like someone has to take charge, though, with some actionable proposals other than everybody post a bunch of black squares to demonstrate how much they care.
Wish I knew how to turn enthusiasm into long lasting political change, but I don’t have a lot of experience at it. Hopefully someone will figure it out!
I do have one recommendation, though: Stop all the chiding of people getting too worried about their property being stolen and burned down. It makes you look like sociopaths and gets everyone to hate you.

Is that really how murder charges work? You can’t go “We think it was 2nd degree murder, but it was at least 3rd degree.”? You have to pick one, and if you get it wrong, he gets off scott free?

I’ve never used the term “snowflakes” unironically, but it’s pretty tempting anytime you see the left completely freaking out that they were exposed to an opinion they really really disagreed with in a left-wing publication.
Let me tell you: You all have numerous opinions just as terrible as Tom Cotton’s, but we’ve all learned to tolerate you. Calm down.

People each day are seeing looters stealing with impunity and rioters attacking people. Of course they’re scared and want the military to do something.

We must abolish the police and leave enforcing the law to personal paramilitary groups funded by billionaires. To be protected, we must win favor with the billionaires, which could perhaps be as simple as subscribing to Amazon Prime.

I remember comic book stories where they blamed all the costume criminals on the existence of Batman, and I guess now people are blaming regular criminals on the existence of police.

Muggers only mug people to get attention to. Without police (or a Batman), they’d stop.

Journalists are debating whether they should keep pretending they’re anything other than political activists.

“Antifa is basically the same as the people who literally fought Nazis but the people who literally fought Nazis are racists and should be cancelled.”

If any newspaper wants me to manage their editorial page, I’ll do it. I think all your opinions are dumb and I will tell that to people’s faces and I will make them cry. Cry for how stupid they are.

I’ve developed something I call “Critical Hit Race Theory.” It says we can end racism if we all roll a 20.

Equality is very much a religious concept. It’s built on the Christian concept of the soul — despite who we may be externally, deep down we are all eternal beings of equal value before God.
It has been treated as a secular value — and people are free to say “There’s no rational basis for this, but I choose to believe it” — though I wonder how long it can last by itself, cut off from a more organized religion.
Now, I very much believe in a secular government — I don’t want other people with force of law deciding what are the right beliefs — but paradoxically that government is built on top of a few religious concepts it’s important everyone buys into.
Equality and rights all stem from the concept of the soul — that there is something special about each and every human life. These are not things you believe thinking people are just some random product of evolution.
Anyway, this is important to keep in mind when we’re trying to figure out how to fight racism. This is a battle about a radical religious concept. You try to un-anchor it to religion, it’s unclear where it could drift off to.

Let’s look at the bright side: We never have to ask: “I wonder what the president is thinking?”

So many people think the big distinction between them and the Nazis is that they’re really extra super-duper sure they’re right about everything.

So we got rid of the police and it ends up we didn’t need them at all. We all imagined crime.

Maybe like how Dexter was a serial killer who killed other serial killers, we need mobs that try to get people fired who join internet mobs.

I think the problem with the “defund the police” idea is that it’s stupid and crazy. The Overton Window can encompass things that are either stupid or crazy, but it’s too ambitious to try to get popular support for an idea that’s both.

When they defund the police, if you’re a serial killer, you’ll get a free pamphlet on how not to serial kill.

I don’t know if I pitch Christianity enough, but a religion with a concept of forgiveness is way better than all those other weird belief systems people buy into these days.

I like how the Mortal Kombat movie on Netflix is promoting itself in its rating.

The actual rating is “PG-13 for non-stop martial arts action and some violence” because I guess martial arts doesn’t count as violence. It’s art.

I just remember the Mortal Kombat movie as the first video game movie that wasn’t unwatchable and also that it was a bit of a ripoff of Enter the Dragon.

Gone with the Wind is one of those movies I always felt I should see but never really wanted to.

Know what would be really progressive? Removing all the movies from this year for all the things in them we won’t know are offensive until 50 years from now.

I don’t see how absolutely everyone doesn’t realize what a terrible idea it is to suddenly single out a Trump tweet for fact checking on Twitter. It’s like having to explain not to lick a hot stove.

I didn’t watch the George Floyd video. I assumed it was pretty bad because the cops were immediately fired, and I’ve seen the videos where no one was fired.

My assumption is that by far most of the protestors are not violent, but those making excuses in support of rioting are actively trying to undermine that view.

A private company has every right to censor even the President of the United States on its platform, I could just do without them pretending it’s all objective when they’re simply other awful people with awful views making decisions for partisan reasons.
Every time they censor, they simply highlight what they never even considered censoring. You’re bad people too; you don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong.

I’m libertarian(ish). And a Christian. That means I view lots of things as really really bad but also don’t think they should be illegal.

I take all the “Rioting is good actually!” from people who aren’t rioting with a grain of salt. So much of everything these days are a performative “Look how righteously angry I am! Don’t I just care so much?”

Bright Side: Things can’t be that bad if we still spend most of our time arguing about really dumb things.

If Biden was president, 100,000 wouldn’t have died from COVID-19 and 40 million wouldn’t have lost their jobs because he would have pulled the “Stop Pandemic” lever in the Oval Office that is right next to the “Economy Do Well” lever.

Wow, they make it hard to know how much things cost in the Minecraft economy. My 6yo son spent $9.99 to buy 1720 coins and then bought a DuckTales world for 1170 coins. Try to do the math in your head on how much dollar-wise that world was.

I’m get frustrated with how many people respond to this with “You just got to get out and vote!” That has been the refrain for decades. That ain’t it, chief. We’re also talking about cities that have been under one party rule for decades. Maybe new strategies are needed.
But I’ll tell you what will make all this worse: Getting really into partisan politics. Our elections are basically the opposite of trying to get people to come together. They’re designed to make a wedge.

You have white liberals sitting in comfort and safety encouraging poor neighborhoods to be burnt down for “justice.” They’re morally no better than the most ardent racists.
We have huge injustice, and so many think they can fix it by stacking more injustice on top of it. They don’t actually want to fix things; they want that brief flash of feeling righteous and will sacrifice anything for it.

Don’t conflate the rioters with the protestors.
That’s aimed at the left who thing they’re “helping” as much as the right.

White supremacists are dumb. If riots were some sort of conspiracy by them, there would be lots of hard evidence.
The hear hoof beats, think horses answer for out of towners stirring things up is it’s a bunch of SJWs who think they’re “helping.”

It might help if a prominent politician offered some sort of solution to excessive police force other than “We’re going to try to be more concerned about this sort of thing.”

So what sort of people do you think riots are going to most motivate to vote?

It’s incumbent on people who aren’t out there rioting but think what happened to George Floyd is horrible—which I believe is a supermajority of Americans—to finally come up with something substantial to do, such as taking on qualified immunity.

“Krab” is closer to real crab meat than antifa is to people who actually oppose fascism.

I have to applaud everyone on the left and right for lots of great ideas on how to make things worse, but let’s keep brainstorming.

A bunch of people tearing down and burning Democrat controlled cities is sure going to teach Republicans and the right… what exactly?

Probably not a good idea to trust the people who think burning down your business is a good thing to provide you health care.

Though no one has actually seen one, scientists have theorized what a single A battery looks like.

The protestors deserve justice — more than “we feel bad” with no substantive measures taken. The rioters and other people just trying to make things worse deserve justice against them. More importantly, the people hurt by this need help. We can manage all of this if we want to.

They’re called “antifa” because none of them could figure out how to spell “fascist.”

All I know about the 1619 Project is that the main architect on Twitter is of the type of left-wing troll I regularly mute because they never appear in my timeline retweeted by the left but only by the right in the context of, “Look at this idiocy!” and why do I need that?

The problem with condemning awful things Trump has done is you can’t be sure how many you’ll find out the day was completely made up by journalists. You really need to stick to statements you saw him say on unedited video.

It’s important to get out and vote in 2020 for the least harmful incompetent.

If you can’t bring yourself to say burning down random business is bad and should stop, then stop pretending you care about injustice.

Man, this sucks for Hong Kong. They need a lot of support right now, and the main country they’re looking to is all “We have plenty of our own problems to deal with right now.”

Good news: Joel Richards, who narrated the first Superego, will be narrating Superego: Fathom. It will be a while until it’s ready, but the audiobook is coming.

It feels like all the attention gathered by the protests will be wasted if people don’t coalesce around a few actionable demands.
I’ve seen some such as ending qualified immunity and reducing the power of police unions. These would change how police operate—and there would be many trade offs for that—but it seems like that needs to be done. The perception is the rule of law doesn’t apply to the police.

I’m hopeful we can come out of all of this stronger.

It’s weird how an appeal to “science” has become a substitute for thinking.
“Science said to do this, so we don’t need to discuss the matter any further.”
That’s not… that’s not how science works.

If you think science tells you to take a particular policy position, you don’t know what science is.

This all comes back to something I’ve said before: There’s no such thing as a non-religious human being. The dichotomy is organized and disorganized religion.

I’m about a 1000x more interested in seeing Phil Lord’s and Christopher Miller’s original take on the Solo movie than the Snyder Cut.

The only one taking money from you for your housing who doesn’t deserve it is the government.

Internet, plentiful food, modern medicine, electricity, indoor plumbing—you don’t deserve any of those things. Those are thing you magically got by being born in the modern era, but no one owes them to you. You start thinking you deserve them, you’re going to lose them.

I don’t know what you say on Memorial Day. It’s certainly not “Happy Memorial Day.” It’s more of a reflective day. Now, I always think of my father who passed away in 2012 from ailments associated with Agent Orange exposure.
I hope with current circumstances, we’d be a bit more reflective on how our current civilization is not some guaranteed thing we all get automatically but is something bought with much work and sacrifice. All that’s required of most is simply to appreciate that.

I’ve never gotten in a twitter argument. I just make arguments that are just too powerful for people to disagree with me.

As much as I like writing short humor pieces, I think novel writing is my favorite. There’s nothing quite like getting a whole plot to come together with barely having anyone at all act completely out of character.

I’m excited for SpaceX. It’s nice to have something forward-looking right now.
Maybe my son can grow up to be a commander in Space Force and fight… I dunno, rocks like in that game Asteroids.
But seriously, I got four kids and I’m tired of all the great stories about space ending with “Ask Grandma about it.”

I don’t really get the mask resistance. If wearing masks helps make people comfortable about opening up sooner, then it’s a no-brainer to me.
It seems like the people arguing masks don’t do anything would be those wanting the entire country to stay closed.

“Nah, man. I got this piece of cloth. We’re good now.”

To me, wearing a mask just seemed like a nice thing to do as we start to open up and make sure infections are still falling, but apparently it’s become this dumb political thing.
I’m one of those who thought people were too docile in the whole “Hey, we’re shutting everything down, including churches!” which I don’t think the government has the authority to do, but I hope we all choose to do things that make it easier for each other to get through this.

I don’t see this Twitter fact-checking tweets leading in a good direction unless they just red-flag every single tweet by a politician.

Can’t wait for Twitter to flag a lie from a politician on the left and then see a bunch of people on the left squeal like stuck pigs.

I can’t believe Trump finally said something on Twitter that wasn’t true.

I just don’t get how anyone at Twitter thought singling out Trump’s tweets for fact checks will do anything other than end poorly.

Trump oversees a booming economy.
Trump oversees a crashing economy.
Trump starts a war.
Trump brings about world peace.
Trump cures cancer.
Trump downs a puppy for fun.
I think we know by now none of these things will move his approval rating more than 2-3 points.

Something that was pretty sad to me was seeing someone in Hong Kong pleading with Trump to do something, saying he’s their only hope. I’m glad that in the U.S. we never have to rely on the U.S. president for anything.
That said, I hope Trump steps up. That would be nice.
