Wednesday Night Open Thread

Some artists have only one really big hit.

Tell the truth now. You glanced down at the video thumbnail and said “Ain’t now way.” But yeah, Jimi Hendrix only had one song hit Billboard’s Top 40. “All Along the Watchtower” peaked at number 20 for two weeks in October 1968.

Yes, he had many more songs hit Top 40 in Europe (to include the U.K.), but here in the USA, he had exactly one Top 40 hit. Why is that? Simple. People are stupid.

Old songs are the best. Now, while I like old songs, I never really got into The Andrews Sisters. Nor really sure why. They just never clicked with me. But they sure had a shipload of hits, including this one, which was the first Number One single of 1945, where it spent seven weeks atop the chart.

Technically, it was the second Number One of 1945, as the year began with “Don’t Fence Me In” which the Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby performed, and which finished 1944 at Number One. So, this song was actually the first new Number One of 1945.

I love history. It’s important to understand history so we don’t make the same mistakes we made before. We still make them, though, because we’re people and people are stupid.

Never been a fan of rap music. Of course, I’m not the target audience.

Never really been a fan of Eminem. Of course, I’m not his target audience.

Eminem has won and Oscar and some Grammys for his music, so somebody really likes it. And that’s fine. I’m just not the target audience, and it shows.

Old songs are the best. This is one I associate with Roy Rogers, if for no other reason than he made a movie of the same name. He also sang it in “Hollywood Canteen.” However, it wasn’t the King of the Cowboys that took the song to the top of the charts. It was Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters. There’s no justice in the world.

Old songs are the best. This one had a couple of hit versions in 1944. Benny Goodman garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song (for “Sweet and Low Down”). Then the Ink Spots and Ella Fitzgerald — on the same record — took it to number one in December of that year.
