I’m not all that familiar with Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. The musical group, I mean. They actually sound okay.

They began to really catch on with a song called “Zoot Suit Riot” which has a swing sound to it. Lyrically, it takes the side of the Zoot Suit crowd instead of the Naval personnel involved in the riots. It makes the sailors out to be the aggressors, ignoring the fact that the first attacks in what became the Zoot Suit Riots were actually against sailors who were chatting up some women in the street. Yes, the sailors retaliated the next day. And it spread out from Los Angeles to areas all across the U.S.

Old songs are the best. Dinah Shore took this to number one in the fall of 1944, spending a total of four weeks at the top of the charts. It was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to “Swinging On A Star.”

I love history. And while this video is ten days out of date (he mentions the current date, which was a week and a half ago), it’s still fascinating to me, because I always loved learning about the planets from the time I first knew what a planet was.

Dave Dudley broke into Country Music big in 1963 with what became his signature song, “Six Days on the Road.” It wasn’t actually his biggest hit, but it was his most well-known over his career.

Some artists only have one really big hit. Arlo Guthrie had a single hit, “City of New Orleans,” peaking at number 5 in 1972. You may know more of his songs, but only other song ever grazed the Hot 100 was “Alice’s Rock & Roll Restaurant,” which peaked at number 97. “Gypsy Davy” never hit the Hot 100, though it did make top 30 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1973.

Old songs are the best. This is one of my favorites.

I love when I can find a filmed performance by the actual artist, though the picture, and sometimes the sound, is of lesser quality. There are better audio versions of this song, if you would rather just listen.

Two of the musicians that appeared on this song? Members of Reel Big Fish. If you haven’t heard of Reel Big Fish, you weren’t paying attention at this time last night.

Reel Big Fish is a group with which you may not be familiar. Their stuff is a heckuva lot better than most things you hear on the radio today. You don’t hear them on the radio, because, well, Ska/Punk isn’t the most popular format today. This was their most popular mainstream-type song, appropriately named “Sell Out.”
