  1. Let’s see, where to start? Ok, how about: John Bolton is now our ambassador/representative/whatever to the UN! Hell yeah! The libs and Dems in congress wanted to f*ck around and obstruct (big surprise there) but the President bided his time and got Bolton in despite them. Another victory for our team! Now for the hard part; cleaning up that sewage tank called the UN building. Good luck Mr. Bolton.

  2. “Let us be realistic about the U.N. It has served our purposes from time to time; and it is worth keeping alive for future service. But it is not worth the sacrifice of American troops, American freedom of action, or American national interests.”
    — John Bolton, from the 1997 Cato Institute Tract Delusions of Grandeur.

  3. Watched “Over There” and wasn’t too impressed. It wasn’t overtly liberal, but it did seem to show only the negative things going on in Iraq. That, and it conjures every single soldier stereotype there is, along with what used to be filled by the “token black,” the “token Arab American soldier,” out to prove that he’s a patriotic American, no doubt. I’d love to hear what servicemen have to say on the show’s accuracy. What does Joefoo think of it? Yes, I know he’s Marine Corp, and the guys in “Over There” are Army, but Joe’s observations ought to be just as valuable. Or anybody else who’s served in Iraq for that matter.

  4. I thought last night’s episode was better than the first, as far as only showing the bad stuff. Although I do think they go out of their way to keep a negative undertone running throughout. For instance, when they showed the caravan turning around on the dirt road, I got the distinct impression that our soldiers were being portrayed as idiots.
Hey, we’re just barely halfway to 50…and I want that prize!! Get commenting! (or cemmenting…whatever you’re more comfortable with)

  5. lc ima mommy,
Not only the caravan, but that incident at the checkpoint was clearly meant to evoke the Italian commie journalist. Although we see the shooters vindicated when the car blows up, there remains the quote by the college grad when he asks something to the degree of, “What if he was just escaping from battle, what if he kept his lights off so he wouldn’t be spotted, is that possible?” And his CO says, “Yup.” No one repudiates what he said. So he charged a checkpoint with his lights off. So what? He could have been a terrorist, and he was. But no war for oil!! (I’m waiting for someone on the show to mention that). I was also struck by the soldiers’ lack of enthusiasm. No one expects, “Ra ra! Lets go to war!” But it’s been proven time and again that 3/4 of all servicemen and women are conservative and I’d wager that a larger amount support the mission. Are you telling me that they took a random assortment of soldiers and it just so happens that they all have a negative outlook (and seemingly the only one who feels differently gets his leg blown off)?

  6. Blackfive posted about ‘Over There’ a few days ago and invited comments from readers, many of whom are military. There are 136 so far, at the location linked. I haven’t watched much television since I went active duty, and see no particular reason to start again now that I’m going on reserve status once more.

  7. Am I the only one deathly afraid of Laurence Simon? I have visions every night of him coming into my room and yelling “Now go to bed!” I can’t even listen to the podcast at night anymore. Scares me more than the boogyman that lives in my closet.

  8. “and seemingly the only one who feels differently gets his leg blown off”
I picked up on that too. The one guy so far who is motivated about his mission is the guy who’s hurt. I’m giving the show one more shot next week…anymore of this crap and I’ll give up. I was really hoping it would be a more positive portrayal, although I’m not really surprised at the negativity…it IS Hollywood.

  9. How many post-WWII war movies have presented a positive portrayal of soldiers and their mission? I don’t mean made after 1945, I mean about any conflict after 1945. WWII is now universally considered the “good war,” and so we occassionally get a masterpiece like “Band of Brothers,” that shows the good along with the bad, and seemingly supports the mission too. But nearly every single Vietnam film (except for “We Were Soldiers” and “Green Berets”), and every film about conflict (or the military) set in the 90’s has focused on the negative. Take “Black Hawk Down,” which chronicles the events of October 3-4, 1993. It was technically sound, and like “Over There,” not overtly biased. But why make a big deal about it? In actuality, the Mogadishu mission was completed, despite the regretable loss of life. The only reason it entered the public consciousness was because the media triumphantly broadcasted video of the soldiers being literally ripped apart by the mob. That, and Clinton quickly disengaged, giving a propoganda victory to our enemies (among others, Osama Bin Laden). All in all, however, it was far from the great defeat that critics of interventionalism claim it to be.

  10. I guess I was hoping “Over There” would be more like Band of Brothers…hoping, not expecting. I expected it to be exactly what it is, another way for the left to portray this war to be anything but just and right, with a few patriotic moments to keep us on the right cool. It’s easy to overlook the negative when we see that all the guy who lost his leg wants to do is get back to his unit.

  11. I think I’ve figured out why “Over There” sucks so badly, and it boils down to the difference between “realism,” and “accuracy.” For a show to be “accurate,” it would have to be meticulously researched, and show all elements in the equation. But “realism” is a lot more vague, and usually boils down to one thing- graphic language and violence. Granted, they don’t fire BB guns over in Iraq, but just because they show bodies exploding doesn’t mean the show is accurate.

  12. Best blog scandal this year: a ten part series on a disastrous Long Range Patrol (Ranger) mission in Vietnam in 1968. Rescued by their fellow LRPs, (in underwear and flip-flops, no less!!!) a few lived to tell about it. But 30 years later, those same men have been attacked as premeditated murderers, frauds, war criminals, liars, cheats, women killers – you name it – by a FELLOW veteran. For ten years they’ve been slandered and publicly attacked. Two young female veterans investigated for over two months, and wrote their objective findings in the ten part series entitled “Brother Against Brother”. Now they are facing harrassment (their website has been crashed twice) and lawsuits.

  13. Anyone hear about that Oliver Stone 9/11 project? Any idea what it’s going to be like? Knowing Stone, it’ll probably say the attacks were actually perpetrated by the Mossad, and in any case, it’s Bush’s fault for not preventing them. I’m expecting another Farentheit 9/11, except Stone’s conspiracy theories will make Moore’s look credible.
