Listen ..at least once a week I get a call up here saying Canada Revenue Agency has taken out an arrest warrant for me for overdue taxes.. I tell them to bring it on and hang up..he never shows and they apparently can’t track him down..not to worry..
Here, the IRS had to actually buy advertising saying “Look, we will never contact you by phone or email for payment, and we surely won’t ask for a gift card to be used for payment.”
It’s laughable, but I feel bad for all the elderly ladies who fall for it and make the scam cost-effective enough to run.
I got one of those calls (middle/advanced aged he/him)…played Micky the dunce driving to get cigs “I can’t find the gift cards you want”, while keeping him on the line (with his DC spoofed phone number…don’t mess with an IT geek on a business phone at his home office)…still on the line, I then drove to the local police station (muted and asked for a detective) and when he got really PO’d and threatened to send the sheriff over to arrest me, another person called (from a spoofed local county courthouse number) and asked me where they could locate me to perform the arrest…”come on over to the town police station, I will be waiting” was not received warmly as he screamed threats and hung up after a solid 45minutes on the phone.
The cop had a good laugh and said he had recently gotten one also. These folks should vet their call lists better and remove geeks and law-enforcement I guess. Spoofing 2 numbers, one local to the potential victim, was pretty slick though.
My mom would get offended that the scammers thought she was elderly (60s and into her nineties) and just give anyone not family/friends a face full and hangup. I usually do but I was on the clock and getting paid for having some fun so, go ahead and judge me as a ‘quiet quitter’.
