Vowel Movement

I mentioned last night that something reminded me of an old song. I also said I’d tell you about it later.

It’s later. And this is the video that reminded me of that song.

Any day you learn something is a good day. When I saw this, I had a good day.

Now you go have a good day too.

I shared this a couple of years ago. I saw a video the other day that reminded me of it. I’ll tell you about that other video later. Anyway, that’s what put this song on my mind.

Soul Asylum? They’re still a thing. Well, they’re still around. Wasn’t really a huge fan, or even a minor fan. Didn’t dislike their stuff, just thought it was okay. They’ve been around longer than I realized. This one is from 25 years ago.

Some artists only have one really big hit. Bobby Hebb was born in Nashville and was actually a member of Roy Acuff’s backing band and played on the Grand Ole Opry stage in that capacity. He learned guitar from Chet Atkins. And he wrote his biggest hit, “Sunny.”

He performed the song at Candlestick Park on August 29th, 1966. The band that had just finished playing their own set stayed on and served as his backing band for the song. That band? The Beatles.

Bobby Hebb had an interesting career.

Declan Patrick MacManus is a talented musician. But, I never really cared for his stage name: Elvis Costello. It wasn’t his idea, actually. He was calling himself D. P. Costello and his manager suggested “Elvis” as a first name.

I never really dislikes his stuff, and actually did buy some of his stuff, but not a lot. He was alright. Or is, I should say. He’s still performing.

Some artists only have one really big hit. 21-year-old Claudine Clark had her only chart hit in 1962 with “Party Lights,” which peaked at number 5 in September of that year. She wrote the song, which should have helped by getting both artist and songwriter royalties — the song was recorded by other artists over the years. I gotta wonder if the little girl from Macon, Georgia got a good contract from the record people in Philadelphia and New York. I hope so.

Some artists only have one really big hit. This former porn star finally broke into music in 1976 and had a massive hit. She had a few top ten dance/disco hits, but nothing anywhere near as big on the Hot 100 as this one.

Medical issues ended her music career and turning 40 halted her porn career. She worked as a psychic and a drug counselor. Andrea True (nee Truden) continued to earn royalties from the song for years until her death at age 68 in 2011.
