Some types of music sound the same to me. Mostly it’s music that I don’t normally listen to. When I was younger, I thought all Big Band music sounded the same. It doesn’t. And, there are some that think all Zydeco music sounds the same.
Some artists only have one really big hit. Jeannine Deckers, AKA Sœur Sourire, AKA The Singing Nun, took a French song to the top of the charts in 1963. Her life didn’t go a rainbows and unicorns after that. She was hounded for taxes for monies she never received, and ended up killing herself a couple of decades later.
I love history. It’s a shame when it’s forgotten, ignored, or destroyed. Today was my usual day to rant on people calling the federal holiday “Washington’s Birthday” by that incorrect name of “Presidents Day.” That contributes to the erosion of the memory of George Washington, which is bad.
The loss of history is what reminded me of this video:
One of the things about posting songs by artists I don’t normally listen to is that I have to learn a little about the artists. Well, I guess I don’t have to, but I do. Sometimes I learn good things, sometimes I learn bad things. But, I always learn things.
I learned only one of the members of TLC was born in Georgia. One moved there as a little girl, and the other (the dead one) moved there to get into the music scene. Speaking of the dead one, I didn’t realize her fatal traffic crash was recorded by a cameraman inside the car. When Lisa Lopez was buried, some of the lyrics from Waterfalls were engraved on her casket.
Some artists only have one really big hit. This one actually hit the chart twice, in 1958 and 1962. Both times it was a modest hit, making the Top 40. And it’s one you’ve heard.
Hilly Michaels is better known as a session musician and a record producer. Primarily producer. Been around performing since 1970, and appeared on records by John Mellencamp, Marianne Faithfull (who he used to live with), Dan Hartman, and Ronnie Wood, among others. Long career. Flirted with his own stuff back in the 1980s. Got a little notice then. How much notice? I’ll tell you tomorrow, okay?
Some artists only have one really big hit. Soul Survivors had a million seller in 1967, but were never able to match the success with any follow-up records. Most of them went back to regular jobs after the music career played out: house painter, body shop mechanic, landscaper, restaurateur. Such is the life of a musician.
