Monday Night Open Thread

I love history. And speaking of love, it’s St. Valentine’s Day in a few days. So, how about combining those two into one?

  1. Rhinebeck Aerodrome. That place is fantastic.
Saturday used to be a sort of drama, I’m not sure if they still do it. It was awesome. The Black Baron against a drunken Brit.
Sunday was just for showing the planes, you can go up in them.

I grew up just across the Hudson from there.
Rhinebeck’s on the pretty side of the Hudson with Rockefeller and Roosevelt mansions, the other side was industrialized with Rockefeller and Roosevelt factories.
Until NY pols discovered the joys of raising taxes and increasing regulations. Now it’s all crappy.

  2. This is a small world…when I was a first termer in the USAF I was based at Stewart AFB outside of Newburgh NY. My wife and I lived in a small town (Walden) and I worked part time at the Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville NY. We spent four years at Stewart (now closed and is a civilian airport) and enjoyed our time there very much. Two of our children were born at West Point.

    • Holy sommelier Batman! My parents and grandparents used to go to the wine tastings at the Brotherhood winery. I remember running around the cellars where the had the huge wine casks for aging the wine.

      • One of my jobs at the winery was to crawl inside those casks and clean them after the wine had been removed. I weighed all of 135 lbs back then and could slip in and out of the casks with no problem…couldn’t do it today though. The winemaster back then (mid nineteen sixties) was from Hungry and spoke English with a very strong accent. He was a little gruff but I liked working for him…he even gave me a raise after I’d been there for a year from $1.35 per hr to $1.50 per hr. and then of course there was the occasional quaff of vino.
