We had an HP-2000 on the sub with a paper tape reader. But first, you had to use the front panel to punch-in the boot loader binary (without error, I might add) which could then be started to read the paper tape and load the Navsat program.
Wow, I just realized I built my first computer before Frank was born!
My first job after graduate school was with the First National Bank of Chicago (since acquired by J P Morgan Chase), in its computer operations organization. As you might have expected from one of the ten largest banks (measured by assets) in the world, it had a lot of disk storage – 7.2 gigabytes. Counting the control units for the disk drives (but not the channels that allowed the IBM 370/168 computers to communicate with them, which should arguably be included, as well), the bank had paid approximately $11 million for the disk storage, which works out to about $1,500 per megabyte. Today, you can buy a 64 gigabyte flash drive from amazon.com for $15.99.
