Uhmm… Look up Formula-E. There is also an all electric desert race series. They can’t do 500 miles yet though. I think Formula-E each team has two cars and swap halfway through the race.
How about an electric car race that utilizes the old carnival bumper car technique where the electricity is provided from an overhead conductor? No recharging needed. They run all day.

Distance matters if you are going to replace gas cars with the multitudes.
