Podunk is the Nipmuc name for a people that called their own homeland Nowashe or Pishgachtigok,. It was sort of a slur at the time because podunk means “where you sink in mire” Nowashe, conversely, means “between two rivers”. Kinda like now, tribes named themselves after where they live. European settlers went with the Nipmuc name. King Phillip’s war had them both team up against the Europeans with devastating consequences for them both. Ironically Phillip wasn’t a European king. He was a Wampanoag chief named Metacomet that adopted the name Phillip. At war’s end most had been wiped out by disease and conflict. In the mid 1700’s whatever remained joined up and headed north to upstate NY & Canada. About 80 years later my house was built in their vacated homeland.
So if you want to go visit a Podunk town, you’ll be in my backyard, and fair warning… I ask questions second…
