Monday Night Open Thread

The other night, IMAO regular Veeshir had a request.

So since Weird Al only had one ‘hit’ movie, could we see a Weird Al, old movies and one hit wonder mega-post?

Well, that’s a tall order, but I’ll try. In fact, I’ll go one better. Or maybe more than one. Let’s see how this goes.

In 1929, there was an old movie called “St. Louis Blues” that featured Bessie Smith.

That’s one old movie checked off. And, a bonus of one old song. But, what about the one-hit wonder aspect? Surely, Bessie Smith wasn’t a one-hit wonder, was she? No, but that’s because there were no charts then. She never hit the Billboard charts, dying in 1937, before the first Billboard charts were released in 1940.

Since there weren’t any charts for her to hit, Bessie Smith wasn’t exactly a one-hit wonder. Based on the criteria of hitting the Billboard chart, she was a no-hit wonder. But a wonder, nonetheless. So I’m checking that one off, even if I’m cheating to do it.

What’s left? Oh, the “Weird” Al video. Let’s see. A blues song by “Weird” Al, huh? Easy peasy.

While this song did not appear in “Weird” Al’s “UHF” movie, it does appear on the soundtrack album. So that tie-in remains. Kinda.

There you go. Yeah, I cheated a little bit, but I don’t care. It’s not about me. It’s about you.

What’s been on your mind? Got something you’d like to share? A topic to discuss? It’s Monday Night Open Thread.
